Ryoshi
Posted by jeny at 12:15 PM
Another Japanese restaurant we tried while we were in Bali besides Take is Ryoshi. They have several outlets in Bali, so one night, we decided to try it. We chose the one at Kartika Bali Garden Hotel. We arrived around 7PM, but the place was empty. The interior is Japanese with tatami seating at the corner. Dim lighting makes this place feels a bit shabby. Anyway, we ordered saba shioyaki (grilled mackarel with salt) set and cold soba. I forgot how much we paid for our meal, but it was in the reasonable range. The meal was quite good, but nothing really stand out. I'd still prefer Take over this place.

Breakfast at Tekor
Posted by jeny at 10:55 AM
SC has been wanting to have breakfast at Tekor Restaurant, so one morning, we got up early, skipped breakfast provided by our hotel and walked for about 45 minutes to Tekor Restaurant. The place was already half-full when we arrived. SC ordered Lumberjack breakfast 31.5K and I opted for Farmer breakfast 20.5K. SC's Lumberjack turned out to be a big portion breakfast consisting of a basket of whole grain bread with jam and butter, 2 sunny side up eggs, 2 slices of ham, 3 roasted tomatoes and assorted vegetables plus fresh orange juice and tea. My order was also quite large, consisting of baked potatoes with scrambled egg and bacon. It was the best breakfast we had in Bali. The price was also reasonable compared to what we get. On top of that, the view from Tekor was also great. I hope we can stay next to Tekor when we get to Bali again, so we can have breakfast there every day :)

I've always loved Indian food, so when I saw one at the corner of Legian street, I insisted we should try it, so we went there for a late lunch. The interior was OK, not too fancy. We ordered Navratan biryani 35K, chai tea 12K and nimbu pani 18K. The portion of the biryani was not large but it was quite delicious. The Chai tasted decent, but I especially liked the nimbu pani because it tasted so fresh plus I found hints of spices in it, even though the recipes I got from the internet only listed lemon juice, salt and sugar as nimbu pani ingredients. :)

[Revisited] Menega
Posted by jeny at 12:25 PM
Still in the same day, we went to Jimbaran to have dinner an hour before sunset. Actually, I wanted to try a new restaurant rather than going back to Menega, but we couldn't make up our mind so we went back to the old stalwart. As we arrived quite early, we ordered the meal to be served after sunset, got a seat in front of the beach and just sat there enjoying the moment. For our dinner that day, we ordered: 0.4kg king prawn 54K, 0.8kg yellow crazy fish 48K, young coconut 20K. plecing kangkung and steamed rice are included. Overall, it still tasted great, but I guess everything will taste delicious if you eat with your loved one at a lovely beach :)

Be Pasih
Posted by jeny at 12:22 PM
After visiting Mak Beng and Made Weti, we decided to go to Jenggala Factory Outlet, which we heard has an outlet at Sanur. However, we failed to find it. We then went straight to Renon to try Warung Be Pasih although we're still quite full from two previous breakfasts. Warung Be Pasih offers fish dishes with traditional Klungkung spices. There were paket ikan bakar 22.5K, paket ikan goreng 16.5K, paket pepes pemuda 20.5K, paket pesinggahan 16.5K, paket steak ikan 18K

Be Pasih

We only ordered one paket pesinggahan (sate lilit, sambal matah, sup ikan, plecing, pepes, kacang tanah & nasi) 16.5K and es daluman (Balinese style of green cingcau sweet drink) 4.5K to share. Overall the dish was delicious and the price reasonable. I just wish I was not so full so I can appreciate it more. :) As for the Jenggala Factory Outlet, we later found its store at Sunset Road with the help of our friends).

Nasi Pantai Made Weti
Posted by jeny at 4:12 AM
After we finished our meal at Warung Mak Beng, it was still early, so we decided to drive to Segara Beach. When we arrived, we saw a small crowd in front of a small hut bearing the name nasi campur ayam kampung Made Weti. We quickly joined the queue and ordered a portion of nasi campur. They offer various kinds of lawar, chicken, telor bumbu bali, sate lilit, etc. Actually it was not much different from nasi campur warung Satria or nasi campur kedewatan, which in my opinion, tasted better than this one. But the atmosphere here are surely different :)

Warung Mak Beng

The next day, we headed to Sanur for Warung Mak Beng, an eatery famous for its fried jangki fish and fish head soup. Located near Sindhu beach, this place is said to be quite popular and would usually sold out by lunch time. Luckily, it was quite empty when we arrived and we can easily get a seat. As usual, we ordered only one portion of fried fish & fish head 22K and orange juice 7K to share. The fried fish was accompanied with sambel ulek and a wedge of lime. The fish head soup is a clear soup with cucumber that tasted very spicy and sour. It was delicious and also fresh. I think they get their fish from nearby Sanur fishermen. :)

Mama's German Restaurant
Posted by jeny at 11:50 AM
There's a German restaurant on Legian street that I've been wanting to try. Since It was not far from our hotel, I dragged SC there for dinner one night. We were seated at the garden bar area where we can see the open bar in the middle of the room, serving German beer. We ordered cream soup mama's special 9.5K, four original Nurnberger sausages served with home made sauerkraut and mashed potato 56.7K, Hot Apple Fritters with one scoop Vanilla Ice 21.5K, ice lemon tea 12.5K. The soup tasted a bit like Hungarian goulash soup, but it was good. The sausages and sauerkraut was also very satisfying and filling. Lucky we only ordered one main course to share. The apple fritters was also delicious, although we felt very full after that. SC had wanted to return for breakfast, but unfortunately, we didn't have the chance to visit it again. Oh well, at least we can be sure that the restaurant will still be there when we return to Bali in a couple of years :D

Flapjacks
Posted by jeny at 10:49 AM
The weather in Bali was mostly scorching hot when we were there, so this place felt like an oasis for us. Located strategically at Kartika Plaza road, this place offers various kinds of gelato, pancakes & pasta. We sat there for a couple of hours just enjoying the ice cream. On our first visit, we ordered Silver dollar pancakes medium (7 pcs) 30K and a single scoop of mango gelato 18K. Several days later, SC insisted we should return and this time, we ordered Italian salad 24K and double scoops gelato for 34K. In my opinion, the dishes taste delicious, especially the homemade gelato. The service was friendly and I love the crimson-dominated interior :)

Nasi Pedas Ibu Andika
Posted by jeny at 11:43 AM
One of our "must try" destination in Bali is nasi pedas bu Andika. Although this nasi rames (mixed rice) style is not Balinese and more likely to be Javanese, it was worth to try as it's very hot / spicy. A few years ago, a friend told us about this place. Back then, it was only a small stall dubbed nasi bu polsek because the owner sold it near Kuta's police station every night. But now, they have a semi permanent place across Supernova minimarket. This time, we tried it during lunch time. We can choose anything from the displayed dishes plus the famous chili sauce. The price was quite affordable, but we ended up sweating nonstop because of the hot weather and very very hot dish :)

Le Spot Café

From Warung Italia, we walked to Bali Deli and entered Le Spot Café. Since it was already dark, we chose to sit inside instead of the garden area and ordered Spaghetti AOP mushroom 38K and french fries 10K for me while SC only ordered dessert, choco mouse cake 20K. In my opinion, the spaghetti AOP was decent and the french fries only average, but the dessert was superb. Two days later, we went back again. This time we sat at the garden area and ordered huzaren sla, ginger ale, veggie drinks and once again, SC ordered dessert, this time tiramisu. Overall, it was delicious. Too bad the Jakarta's Bali Deli had closed.

Warung Italia
Posted by jeny at 11:32 AM
After nasi ayam kedewatan ibu mangku, our next list is Warung Nuri. But since we've already eaten at 4 places in less than 6 hours, we decided to skip this one and went directly to Sukawati market for some shopping. From there, we went to Seminyak area. It was almost dinner time when we arrived. I want to have dinner at Bali Deli, but SC wanted to try Warung Italia, so we went there first.

Warung Italia

It has a warm and cozy ambience. They serve decent Italian fares such as salads, pizza, lasagna, pasta etc at an affordable price. SC ordered fresh gnocchi (a kind of Italian thick dumpling) with fungi sauce 30K and lemon squash 8K. He found the gnocchi to be quite delicious. I tried it a little and didn't like the gnocchi's texture, although I loved the creamy mushroom sauce. I think I will try this place again the next time we visit Bali.

Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Ibu Mangku
Posted by jeny at 8:06 PM
Our next destination in Ubud was the famous Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Ibu Mangku. Located at Kedawetan village, we quickly found it because numerous cars were parked in front of the place, a Balinese style house which has been converted into a restaurant. Apparently Nasi ayam (chicken rice) is the only menu available here. :)

Nasi Ayam Kedawetan Ibu Mangku

Since we are still very full, we only ordered a portion to share. The dish consists of: chicken slices with spicy sauce (base genep), lawar, egg, sate lilit ayam and of course sambal matah. It was really delicious. I think this is a good place for those who want HALAL food in Bali.

Terazo
Posted by jeny at 11:03 AM
From babi guling bu Oka, we walked to Terazo several doors away to find some dessert and cool down a bit before we continue to our next dish. We ordered Tiramisu with passion fruit soup (small) 48K to share. The presentation was very attractive and the passion fruit (markisa) gave a sour-ish taste for the tiramisu, unusual but in a good way. However, we detected almost no hint of coffee. I think I still prefer original tiramisu than this fusion one. After that, I was interested to try gazpacho soup (a cold Spanish tomato-based raw vegetable soup) 35K, so I ordered it. Unfortunately, it was too sour for my taste, so I let SC finish it for me :)

Babi Guling Ibu Oka
Posted by jeny at 4:18 PM
Our next destination is the famous babi guling bu Oka. It was still early when we arrived, so I wandered in Ubud market buying some souvenirs & spices while SC chose to sit at Bu Oka, waiting for them to open. When I returned to Bu Oka, they were already open. So we ordered a portion of nasi campur topped with luscious slices of pork meat and crispy pork skin. I'm glad to find that this is still the best babi guling. The meat itself tasted a bit plain, but the spice that accompanied it enhanced the taste, and if you love spicy food, add their sambal matah. Their sambal matah is a bit oily compared to Warung Teges's, but tasted very hot. Btw their orange juice is also worth to try. :)

Warung Teges
Posted by jeny at 10:51 AM
We headed to Ubud the next day. Our first stop is Warung Teges which was recommended by a friend for its delicious urutan (Balinese sausages). When we arrived, it was still early (around 10AM in the morning), We only ordered one portion of nasi campur Bali for two, considering our ambitious list of dishes to try that day. The dish came in an ingka (woven coconut leaves spine) plate layered with banana leaf. The warm rice is topped with lawar, tum ayam, urutan, grilled pork slices, gorengan and sambal matah (19K including drinks). In my opinion the dish tasted delicious, although the urutan is a bit tough. I love their sambal matah so much and I think it might be the best I've ever tasted so far. The sambal is not too oily with strong hint of lime. It tasted light & fresh, yet still spicy enough. I'm already missing it now :)

Take
Posted by jeny at 12:49 PM
That night, we decided to have something light for dinner. We found a Japanese restaurant called Take about 1 km from our hotel. The restaurant was about half full with the Japanese owner greeting and chatting with regulars. Most of the patrons were Japanese, so we had high hopes that the food here would be authentic. The menu is quite extensive, ranging from fresh sushi and sashimi, seafood, meat, tofu, and ramen. We only ordered: dobinmushi (a soup made from several types of mushroom & fish and served in a teapot with 2 teacups), gindara teriyaki and miso ramen. I love the dobinmushi. It was tasty and the mushroom & fish meat were generous. The miso ramen was also very good and tasted quite differently from ramens we usually had back in Jakarta. SC particularly loved the large pork slices in the ramen. The gindara was also great, but most of all, the price was very reasonable :)

Sate Lilit Warung Satria
Posted by jeny at 11:38 AM
After sate plecing, SC insisted that we should visit Warung Satria. So he dragged me over 500m there. Since we're very full after Candra & Sate Plecing, we only ordered 3 sticks of sate lilit, a type of Balinese satay made from minced meat --usually fish meat, but chicken and beef can also be used-- mixed with grated coconut, thick coconut milk, lemon juice, shallots, and pepper. The mixture is then wound around bamboo sticks and grilled on charcoal. For SC, Warung Satria's sate lilit is still the best sate lilit he had ever tasted. :)

Sate Plecing
Posted by jeny at 10:00 AM
From Candra, we went to Pasar Kumbasari to buy some souvenirs to bring home. The market was very quiet, not much tourists can be seen there. After that, we walked to Arjuna street to have some Sate Plecing. We found the place at the corner of Yudisthira & Arjuna street. Judging by the crowd inside, I'm hopeful that it would be good. The menu here is very simple: pork satay in sweet sauce, pork satay in plecing sauce, sop babat & sop baso. We ordered sate plecing babi 10K, es jeruk 6K, bakso 9K. It was good. The pork satay combined with the spicy plecing sauce is perfect. I also liked the meatball soup, as I love Balinese style soup so much, I gulped it till the last drop :)

Babi Guling Candra
Posted by jeny at 8:58 PM
Last month, we took a vacation trip to Bali with a long list of things to try. Of course, Babi Guling (Balinese suckling pig) featured high on the list. Aside from Babi Guling Bu Oka we've tried 3 years ago, we heard that Babi Guling Candra also serves delicious suckling pig. So we went there and arrived around lunch time. We ordered a portion of Nasi Campur Babi Guling Special 25K and es Daluman 4K. Compared to Bu Oka, Babi Guling Candra provides much more side dishes. The menu came with lawar, urutan, sate lilit and a bowl of soup. The taste was quite good and I especially like their clear soup. However, in my opinion, the suckling pig at Bu Oka is still the best. :)

The meal came with a plate of delicious plecing kangkung. The seafood was so delicious with 3 types of chili sauce for dipping.

One of my must visit place in Bali was Uluwatu, so on one evening we drove to Uluwatu cliff to watch kecak and fire dance there. To enter the temple we must put on a violet sarong with yellow belt. The temple was located in the southest part of Bali which we can saw a marvelous sea ahead. Around the temple there's a lot of monkeys. Some of the monkey were very naughty. They always try to steal the visitor glasses or hat. After a while we walk to a place where there will be a kecak and fire dance around 6PM. The ticket for this show is 50K/person. We're given a brochure containing the story/ brief information of the show. The brochure were available in several languages.

Since we stayed at Legian - Kuta, we had a chance to try so many restaurant in here, and I decided to make a summary of what we have here. Some of it was international cuisine : greek/Turkish at Kebab Palace, Italian cuisine at Kuta Puri Restaurant. We also found Balinese buffet at glory restaurant. Most of the night we just wandered around Kuta traditional market where there's a lot cheap food choices : nasi pedes (java), bakmi ayam, soto ceker, several nasi lawar babi seller, nasi jenggo. All of it were very cheap (from 2K - 7K).

One of the restaurant we visit while in Denpasar was "Gemah Ripah": a middle class restaurant that served Balinese cuisine such as : the famous Babi Guling (Balinese suckling Pig), sate lilit, ayam/bebek betutu etc. located at "pertokoan Kartika Udayana", the place interior was clean and homy, plus 2 table for "lesehan". we ordered one of their special menu : nasi campur bali (pisah) 13.5K. the meal came with a place of steamed rice accompanied with a plate consist of babi guling, lawar, urutan, usus goreng, kulit babi guling, sate tusuk, rambak and a bowl of spicy "ares" soup. Overall it was delicious, especially the "urutan" (Balinese pork sausage). the most delicious "urutan" I've ever tasted :)

Warung Satria & Warung Wardani
Posted by jeny at 7:15 PM
One of our missions in Bali is to try out authentic Balinese cuisine, so the next day we jumped on a bemo and headed to Denpasar. We wanted to try 2 restaurants serving halal version of 'Nasi Campur Bali': "Warung Satria" and "Warung Wardani". Our first stop was Warung Satria. The place was still empty since we arrived early. So we ordered 'Nasi Campur Special' (steamed rice served with shredded chicken in spicy sambal, lawar, balinese spicy egg, plecing kacang panjang, sate lilit ikan, fried prawn, complete with sambal matah) 16K. The meal came in quite a generous portion + a bowl of 'ares' (edible banana stem) soup. It was delicious and the 'sate lilit' (Balinese grilled fish satay) is the best compared to sate lilit from all other places we've tried in Bali.

Made's Warung

Last week, I dragged SC for a culinary tour to Bali. After we arrived, we took a short walk around Legian - Kuta and landed at "Made's Warung": one of the more popular places in Bali, serving European, Indonesian, Thai, and Indian dishes. We ordered "Tipat Tjantok" (Balinese gado-gado / blanched vegetables with spicy peanut sauce dressing) 20K and "Rujak Kuah Pindang" (Balinese fruit salad served with fish stock) 15K. Overall not bad lah for a start :)
