The Wang
Posted by jeny at 10:02 PM
We tried this place last year, but somehow I've forgotten to write about it. The Wang is located at Plaza Lippo Sudirman, at the exact spot where there used to be a Chinese restaurant called Dragon City which served quite delicious Halal dimsum. The restaurant was closed in 2008, but we later heard that they reopened as The Wang, so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant's interior was pretty much the same as before, with its reception area filled with a huge display of shark's fin (we didn't like this as we don't endorse eating shark's fin or any other endangered species). We ordered the usual dimsum menu: fish congee with century egg 32K, siew mai 16K, ha kau 16K, pangsit udang salad 18K, lumpia goreng 18K, pangsit pocai 16K, cheong fan udang 18K, cheong fan cakwee13K, pie ayam panggang 13K, lumpia saus tiram 18K, talas goreng (wu kok) 13K, tan tart 13K and ended it with puding mangga 22K, pudding kacang almond 22K, pudding alpukat 22K, and es lemon sereh 22K. Overall the dishes were quite decent, but it seemed to have lost its old charm, plus the price was quite pricey compared to other dimsum restaurants.

Ce Wei
Posted by jeny at 8:08 AM
Last month, we had dinner with my high school friend and her husband at Ce Wei restaurant, Pluit Village (used to be Megamal). I've heard about this restaurant since they opened their first restaurant at Wisma Dharmala Sakti several years ago, but I've also heard that Ce Wei is quite expensive, so it wasn't high on our list of restaurants to try. We changed our mind when we saw that a certain credit card had a discount program at Ce Wei. The interior is not really appealing and the lighting is a bit dark, but the restaurant was quite full at dinner time, so we're hoping the food will be good :)

Ce Wei

The discount didn't included BBQ items, so make sure you asked first before ordering. So here's what we ordered; we started with tofu and crab soup 26.8K, hot & sour seafood soup 26.8K, and pork & lotus soup 28.8K, then 2 combination bbq platter 68.8K, soft shell crab with salty egg 54.8K, angsio iga babi 68.8K (came with fried man tou), tofu with mushroom 52.8K, stir fried eggplant with spicy sauce 42.8K. Overall it was delicious, I especially liked their softshell crab, tofu with musroom & the sechuan soup. :)

Mama Cafe
Posted by jeny at 2:25 PM
Last month, as we were having lunch with several friends at Milan restaurant, I read Lita's tweet about coconut rum ice cream at Mama Cafe. I suddenly wanted to try it and since the place was not too far away from Milan, we decided to head there for dessert. Mama Cafe is located at the lobby floor of Mediterania Apartment. It's not big but the atmosphere is cheerful. It's a great place to enjoy Sunday afternoons when there are no smokers around. That day's specialty is kahlua ice cream, so I decided to try both coconut rum & kahlua ice cream, while SC enjoyed his portion of chocolate & rum raisin ice cream. It was delicious and I can still feel the coconut flakes in the ice cream. The kahlua was also great. When we're finished and ready to get home, the owner of the cafe provided us with a generous sample of her new 'local durian ice cream'. When I tried it at home, it tasted superb. The durian taste was smooth but flavorful. I can't wait to return and have some more :)

Tian Xi
Posted by jeny at 3:29 PM
Two weeks ago, we had dinner at Tian Xi, Senayan City. The restaurant is under the same management as Red Duck, with a big sign that said they used no pork & no lard. The place is designed in Chinese contemporary style and it's quite spacious. After thumbing through its extensive menu, I decided to order nasi sapo bebek original tian xi 55K, while SC ordered his usual comfort food kwetiaw seafood siram tiram 43K. The waitress informed us that it would take about 20 minutes to prepare my claypot rice. SC's kwetiaw siram came first. It tasted delicious with fresh seafood. I had a good time helping SC finish his meal. My claypot rice came out on time. It was still sizzling hot, but I liked it. The rice was cooked 'al dente' (not too mushy as I usually found in claypot rice), The oyster sauce was a bit overpowering, but the roast duck & black Chinese mushroom was truly delicious. The meat was succulent and flavorsome. The experience was quite pricey, but I think it was worth it.

MOF
Posted by jeny at 10:26 PM
I've been wanting to try MOF Japanese Sweets for several weeks, but couldn't find the right time since we're always too full after dinner to try another place for dessert (yes, we are not that young and adventurous anymore). So, I decided that we should try this place first before having dinner :P The place is not big, but it feels cozy. The menu ranged from Japanese dessert to gelato. They also have several selections of sandwich & bento, though I'm not sure how they're going to prepare that in such tiny kitchen. I ordered Tonkatsu Salmon Sandwich 35K and Chocolate Gelato with waffle 29K. They have several dishes with tonkatsu in their names, but I didn't find any sign of tonkatsu (AKA pork cutlet) in my salmon spread sandwich. Overall, the sandwich was nice. The waffle with gelato was surprisingly good. I liked the texture of the waffle that was thick but still crunchy. The dark chocolate gelato was also delicious, topped with dark chocolate bits and sliced almond. My only complaint was that the portions are too small. Overall, it was quite pricey for dessert. :)

Depot 369
Posted by jeny at 9:56 AM
Two months ago, as we were passing Mangga Besar street while looking for a place to eat, I spotted a place bearing a small sign "Depot 369, Shanghai Dumpling & Noodle". It got us interested and we decided to give it a try. The restaurant's interior and ambiance look quite promising, except for the fact that there's no non-smoking section. We ordered a bowl of Mie Kou Rou (noodles topped with soy braised pork meat) 29K. It was delicious. The next time, we went to their branch near Kedoya's Food Hall with a friend and I ordered their Mie Sop Shanghai (Shanghai noodle soup) 40K. It was disappointingly bland, but SC offered to swap my order with his Song Mie (Song noodle) 24K, which tasted much better. I have a feeling that the Mangga Besar branch offered better tasting noodle, so we went back there again a couple of days ago and ordered the classic wonton noodle 21K and Martabak Tiongkok 15K. The wonton noodle was good, but not as good as the Mie Kou Rou. I found the Martabak Tiongkok to be a bit bland, but SC loved it because the spice was not too overpowering. :)

Siauw A Tjiap
Posted by jeny at 11:10 PM
While growing up, SC & his family has many fond memories of eating out at Siauw A Tjiap, one of the old school Chinese restaurants in Jakarta. He kept saying about how good their food were. We tried it once last year by ordering take outs from their Taman Ratu branch and the result was disappointing. Some of the food even tasted weird. But still, SC assured me that maybe the old one located at Pancoran would taste better. So last month, as I passed this area, I entered the place and ordered one of their specialties: Lindung Cah Fumak (about 43K) to bring home. This time I was not disappointed, the dish really tasted delicious. The eel was deep fried until crispy and they use some fermented red rice wine in the sauce. I guess I'll be back later for more :)

Rakuzen
Posted by jeny at 10:08 PM
Last weekend, we have dinner at Rakuzen Japanese restaurant at Pacific Place. This is our second visit and this time I wanted to try the nabe menu. After scanning the menu for a while, I decided to order kaisen kami nabe (assorted seafood cooked in paper hotpot) 95K while SC ordered ebi kakiage jyu (fried prawn and vegetables on rice served with miso soup) 65K. The hotpot is presented attractively in a paper-covered metal bowl, with a small burner underneath. The vegetables, tofu, mushroom, salmon, prawn, scallop, and oyster, among others, are placed on top of the paper and poured with broth. As I waited for the nabe to boil over, I sampled some of SC's order. It tasted good, but the kakiage reminded me so much of bala bala (Indonesian mixed vegetables fritter). The hotpot tasted delicious too, with fresh ingredients and tasty soup. Although the prices were quite pricey for those portions, I think they're worth a try. Plus their ocha is free :)

Sop Ubi Jahe "Pancoran"
Posted by jeny at 8:52 AM
Last week, when I was walking past Pancoran area, I noticed a small sign on the side walk bearing the name "Pancoran - Teddy". The stall offers various kinds of warm dessert such as: bubur kacang ijo, bubur kacang tanah, bubur kacang merah, ubi, jali-jali and telor teh. I remembered that this is one of SC's favorit desserts, so I stopped by and ordered sop ubi jahe 9K and sop kacang tanah 9K. It was delicious, the combination of warm ginger soup with the sweet potato is perfect. The sop kacang tanah is also delicious, especially with the addition of coconut milk.

Nasi Tim @ Bakmi Loncat
Posted by jeny at 7:59 AM
I'm very picky when it comes to nasi tim, I hated nasi tim that is too mushy or too sweet. So far, my favorite nasi tim is the one sold near Taman Palem's traditional market and Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi. Last week, when I ate at a noodle stall located at Petak Sembilan's market, an elderly patron who sat in front of me ordered a portion of nasi tim and cracked open a boiled duck egg (I suspect he brought it from home). His portion of nasi tim looks very interesting, plus he asked for some chicken skin in his soup, and then put some spring onion and cilantro into the soup. I want that too! Unfortunately, I've already ate a bowl of noodle, which, by the way, tasted good. Later, he told me that the place serves a very delicious nasi tim that will always be sold out by 8AM. The next day, I returned here at 7AM and ordered a portion of nasi tim with some chicken skin in my soup. It was delicious. The rice was not too mushy, the chicken chunks were generous and they also added some Chinese black mushroom. The soup was real chicken broth soup, not MSG-laden soup usually found at noodle stalls. And to top off my excitement, this delicious meal only cost me 11K. :)

PS: their noodle, siomay and bakso goreng are also worth to try

Bibliotheque

Bibliotheque

From Tokio Joe, we went to Bibliotheque for dessert. It's said to be one of the new hip places in Jakarta and from what I heard, they have a nice concept. Because we arrived without reservation, I'm a bit hopeless that we can get a table. Luckily, it was still early Saturday night, so the place wasn't crowded yet and we can get a table until 9:30PM. Bibliotheque's interior is designed to look like an old british library with parquet flooring, high ceiling, mezzanine floor, high window panel, complete with bookshelves and ladder covering the wall. They've already put on Christmas decoration and Christmas jazz music played in the background, making the ambience warm and comfortable. Even the restroom looked nice :)

Tokio Joe

This is the first time I went to Tokio Joe since they moved from Mandarin Oriental Hotel to Nikko Hotel. When I found out that they offer a 50% discount on ala carte menu for users of RBS credit card, I contacted my friends to meet there. We decided to have an early dinner on Saturday afternoon. When we arrived, the place was quiet since it was still too early for dinner. We ordered green tea 20K, then dobinmushi 49K, mixed mushroom soup 70K, assorted tempura 99K, handsome joe (Tokio Joe's signature fusion sushi which consist of deep fried prawn and avocado) 80K and baked scallops 130K. Overall, the dishes were still as good, although the dobinmushi's portion could've been bigger. The mixed mushroom soup cooked in foil is delicious, but the most delicious thing we had that night is baked scallops. The scallops were fresh and topped with a thick layer of cheese. It was delicious. We didn't order any dessert since we're planning to have dessert some place else. :)

Bakmie Bangka Poppay
Posted by jeny at 4:30 PM
Last weekend, I was doing some shopping at ITC Mangga Dua and decided to have lunch there. I remembered that someone has recommended a noodle stall called Poppay on the second floor of ITC Mangga Dua. I'd passed this place several times in the past and it was always packed with customers. So we went there this time and determined to wait until we got a table. As predicted, the place was full. We waited several minutes to get a table. From the menu pasted on the wall, we learned that they serve mie ayam bangka, pempek, tahu kok & nasi tim. We quickly placed our orders: bakmie bangka 12K and tahu kok 12K. We have to wait for another 20 minutes until our orders were served. The taste was decent, but not that great to justify the throng of people here. Plus, the service is really bad. I have to nag them several times for our orders. I guess that was enough to turn my mood off.

Bihun Siram Picis
Posted by jeny at 5:03 AM
Not far from Nasi Ulam Misjaya, there's a small place bearing the sign PICIS. I remembered that someone said Picis is famous for its burung dara goreng (fried pigeon). However, I also heard that the price for that delicacy is unreasonably high, so I didn't dare to order it. Instead, I ordered a portion of bihun siram to take home. A portion of bihun siram cost about 30K, also quite pricey, but I think it was worth it since they put in some prawns, meat, pork's liver and intestines in the topping. The rice noodle was cooked until it was a bit burnt, then they cooked the thick soup full of green vegetables and meat. They packaged the rice noodle and thick soup in separate wrappers so I can mix it later when I got home. The aroma was quite fragrant as they cooked and I have high hope for the dish. Yet when I tasted it, I noticed a little sour taste in the thick soup, which is weird for me. The chili sauce was also a bit sour. I'm not sure whether the dish is supposed to taste like that or not, but I didn't like it.

Nasi Ulam Misjaya

Over the past year, I've tasted several kinds of nasi ulam whenever I've stumbled upon them. Yet, none of them was as good as Nasi Ulam Betawi Misjaya located in front of Toa Se Bio Shrine at Glodok area. It opens on late afternoons and is never lacking in customers. One day, I managed to have a bite there. It was quite packed, but luckily, there was an empty table in front of the shrine. I ordered a portion of nasi ulam with semur tahu & salty squid 12K. The rice came in a full plate consisting of steamed rice topped with fried bihoon, sliced cucumber, chopped fried peanut, fried shallot, salty squid slices, semur tahu, drenched in semur soup, topped with kerupuk, emping and kemangi (lemon basil). The taste was delicious and not too sweet. Too bad I didn't spot the chili jar until after I've finished the meal. I bet it would make the dish taste even better :)

Potato Head
Posted by jeny at 9:25 PM
I've been meaning to visit this place from several months ago, but due to its popularity, I was unable to make the reservation and was told to make a reservation 2 weeks ahead. After that, I just lost my interest. But last weekend, my friend managed to reserve a table for the 10 of us on Friday night. So we went there and after waiting for a while, we were given a table inside. The interior design of Potato Head is actually quite interesting, with walls and ceilings covered with lots of old window panels in various sizes. The lighting is very poor, so please forgive my poor pictures. I don't quite like this place since our table was directly under the aircon that blown us with cold air from top & behind.

I heard about this Takoyaki seller several months ago and I urged SC to try it with me. So one night, we went to Melawai area and start looking for this place. From what I heard, it was just a stall perched in front of Kushigin Japanese restaurant at Melawai IX street, but it we couldn't find it. Later we decided to park and go on foot to find the place. We finally found it in a Padangnese restaurant called Padang Sisi. It was quite weird to found a Takoyaki seller inside a restaurant serving West Sumatra dishes. We ordered a portion of Takoyaki (たこ焼き) 25K for 12pcs and watched them prepare the dish. It was quite good, but slightly dangerous as there are plenty of opportunities to burn your tongue if you're not careful :P

Tan Tan

From Marmalade, we went to Pancious. After that, while strolling around Miniapolis area, I noticed a restaurant called Tan Tan that puts a non halal sign in front of the restaurant. It grabbed my attention and I couldn't resist going inside. The restaurant is decorated in red with fancy styling. It was lovely, but I was sceptical that this place can serve authentic Chinese cuisines. It looked more like a place for parents to hang out while waiting for their kids to finish playing.

Macau Che Jian

One Friday evening, we were looking for the ATM center in Grand Indonesia when I noticed a restaurant called Macau Che Jian next to the ATM center. After scanning the menu, we decided to go inside and get a seat. This restaurant serves Macaunese cuisine which is quite different from the usual Chinese cuisine because of the Portuguese influence. One of their specialties is Macau baked rice. It's rice topped with chicken or seafood then covered with tomato/cheese/Macau sauce and then baked. That evening, I ordered Macau baked rice with chicken and macau sauce 27.5K. The taste was quite unique because Macau sauce tasted a bit like curry sauce, but not too spicy. The portion was moderate with reasonable price :)

A new burger joint called Fat Burger has just opened in Plaza Indonesia Extension. It's a franchise from the US. We went there several weeks ago and ordered their smallest set menu which includes burger (without additional egg/beef bacon), fries and soft drink. It costs us close to 60K. The taste was actually not bad as they claimed to use high quality beef for its patties. However, as it's quite pricey, I think I still prefer the good old Burger King :)

Ayam Taliwang Rinjani
Posted by jeny at 11:15 AM
This seller was formerly known as Ayam Taliwang Rosidi and used to be located at Pesanggrahan street near Nasi Gandul restaurant. However, they've moved to a building next to Pesanggarahan flyover. The place is quite hard to find. The easiest way to go there is by following the road to the new food hall (it was a ranch market before) and then turning left to Pesanggrahan. One day, during Lebaran holiday week, we went there for lunch, and luckily they had just opened. I ordered the set menu which consists of rice plus grilled Lomboknese spicy chicken complete with it chili sauce and plecing kangkung and teh botol. It was still as good as I remembered. The service is a bit slow, but it was understandable since it was still in Lebaran mode. :)

Following that little incident at Siam Garden, we thought about ending our adventure as we were already very full. But there's one more restaurant to try. We decided to order egg tart 12.8K from Peach Garden, a chinese restaurant. It was quite good, although the service was a bit slow -- understandable because of the crowd. We returned several weeks later to sample their congee (just so so), carrot cake (delicious) and beef noodle (also delicious). Overall some of the item were delicious and some was only so so. :)

Siam Garden

Already quite full from 3 restaurants we visited before, we headed to Siam Garden just to try their dessert. Upon arriving, we asked whether there is a 50% discount and they answered that it only applies for food. Initially, I want to order Thai Mango Sticky Rice (kao niao ma muang), but it was not available so we ordered Cassava in coconut milk 9K and Durian Sticky Rice 22K instead. To be honest, the desserts didn't look appealing although the taste was acceptable. After we finished eating, we asked for the receipt, and found out that there was no discount at all. We complained and they adamantly said that the discount only applies for food, so we asked: "weren't the desserts count as food?" After a while, they finally gave us the discount and said that it was only for this once. It was actually not much, but I just didn't like their attitude. Well, I guess I'll never visit this place again.

Mandarin Chicken Rice
Posted by jeny at 3:30 PM
Our next stop is a small restaurant perched at the front of PX Pavillion's restaurant alley. It's so tiny that 20 people would be enough to crowd the place. As the name suggests, Mandarin Chicken Rice only sells chicken rice. So we ordered a portion of Hainam chicken rice 28K. At first, I underestimated this place since good hainanese chicken rice is not easy to find, but it was surprisingly good. The steamed chicken was delicious with generous portion. The Hainam rice also tasted good. I think we'll be back to this place whenever I crave good chicken rice but to lazy too cook :)

Next, we went to Mamma Mia restaurant. It's an Italian restaurant specializing in pizza & pasta. So we went inside and ordered a portion of Rigatoni Ratatouille 50K and a can of soft drink 10K to share (yeah, we're cheap, so what?). The waiter kept suggesting us to order pizza, but we decided to only try the pasta this time. The pasta came in quite a big portion, cooked aldente and drenched with zucchini, aubergine and tomato sauces. We were puzzled by a chocolate-colored sauce on top of the pasta, which the waiter later described as balsamic vinegar. Overall the dish was good. The ratatoille was delicious. We went back there on Eid-ul Fitr holiday and tried some of their pastas & pizzas. It was quite good, not the die die must try sort, but at least much better than Izzi Pizza or Pizza Hut.

Hakone Japanese Restaurant
Posted by jeny at 10:49 AM
Last month, we read on the newspaper that PX Pavilion is giving 50% discount for dining in their restaurants. Since we haven't been to these restaurants, we decided to give it a try. However, we've just had our lunch so we only sampled a little in each restaurant we visited. Our first stop was Hakone Japanese Restaurant. The restaurant was quite empty when we arrived. We got a seat and began to order. We ordered sanma shioyaki (mackarel grilled with salt) 35K, gyu tan / 牛タン (grilled beef tongue) 22K, nasu / ナス (grilled eggplant) 6K, and crispy soft shell crab 33K with 3 ocha @5K to share. Overall, the dishes were great. The shioyaki was decent with quite generous portion, the gyutan and nasu also tasted good, and the price was surprisingly affordable, even without the discount :)

Soto Khas 'Bu Nyai'
Posted by jeny at 10:06 AM
From Bakmi Kucai, we walked several steps and found a place that serves Soto Betawi. They offer Soto Kaki, Soto Daging & Soto Campur. However, since we're already quite full, we only ordered a bowl of soto campur to share. The soto is quite different from what we usually had. The soup base is made from milk, not coconut milk. The meat & offal were tender. It was a savory meal and we really enjoyed it. :)

Mie Goreng Kucai 35
Posted by jeny at 7:17 AM
From Ibu Kacamata, we went to the other side of Senen Flyover. Located near the distinctive Wayang Orang Bharata building, there's an old restaurant bearing the name Bakmi Kucai 35. It is a typical old Chinese eatery, a bit shabby but we wanted to try it as we've heard rave reviews about this place. We ordered a plate of Bakmi Kucai (medium) 17.5K to share among the four of us. They asked us whether we wanted to have lap cheong (Chinese pork sausage) in the noodle and we nodded enthusiastically. When it came, we were amazed at the generous portion. It was enough for 2 hungry men. Luckily we've only ordered one portion. The noodle is undoubtedly one of the best fried noodle I've ever tasted. It was delicious, a bit sweet, but not too overpowering. Too bad the location is quite far so we can't go there regularly. :)

Ibu Kaca Mata
Posted by jeny at 8:17 PM
3 weeks ago, we went back to Senen area to try Padangnese dishes by Ibu Kaca Mata. The place is located near Uni Upik. Just walk past the familiar Kapau staills and turn left into the first small road and walk a little further inside the alley to find more and more Padangnese stalls, where one of them is Ibu Kaca Mata. This time, we arrived earlier around 7PM so it was still open. Some of the dishes were sold out, so we managed with whatever was still left. We chose: ayam bakar, ikan bakar, gulai limpa, rendang jengkol, perkedel, complete with the usual sambal merah & sambal hijau and vegetables. I think this place doesn't serve Kapau dishes, but more like Padang Panjang dishes (please correct me if I'm mistaken). Overall, it was delicious :)

Capocaccia
Posted by jeny at 9:04 AM
Three weeks ago, we went to Pacific Place for some grocery shopping. Before that, I insisted that we had lunch first. So we entered a restaurant called Capopaccia, an Italian Sandwich bar. Since we're cheap and the meal prices at Capocaccia are quite high, we only ordered one portion of Astolfo sandwich 57K and tiramisu 60K to share. The service was flawless, even though we didn't look like the people who frequents this place. The meal came not long after we ordered and the waiter offered to cut it into 2 pieces. I have to admit that it was the best sandwich I've ever had. The bread was crisp, the vegetables was fresh and the meat was delicious, with generous slices of brie cheese on top of the meat. No need for any ketchup or chili sauce to go with the sandwich. It was perfect as is.

Capocaccia
After the sandwich, our Tiramisu came. Topped with dark chocolate bits, it looked so delicious. As expected, the taste was definitely above average. The cream cheese was the creamiest that I'd ever taste. Even though I still prefer Coffee Tree's tiramisu, this one was also very good. If it weren't for the high prices, we might just become Capocaccia's regular patron.

Lenggok Betawi

Right after Bu Kris, we drove to PIK area in order to sample sup buntut (oxtail soup) in a restaurant that is highly recommended by one of our friends. Lenggok Betawi is located near the famous Leko & Tekko restaurants, but the situation was much less hectic. So we went inside and ordered: nasi uduk 5K, nasi gurih 5.5K, buntut balado 27.5K, sup buntut 27.5K and sate urat 15.5K. Overall, the dishes were quite good, I like their nasi uduk & sop buntut. Their buntut bakar was also not bad. We'll be back to try their other menus.

Warung Bu Kris
Posted by jeny at 5:38 PM
For the past several weeks, we've been going to a number of restaurants that seem to have invaded Jakarta with their penyet menus. This one is also one of the well-known names from Surabaya. I've heard several friends raving about the restaurant, so one weekend, we decided to try Warung Bu Kris for lunch. The restaurant is quite spacious and they offer many variations on penyet menus. Besides ayam penyet, they also have iga penyet. So we ordered: iga penyet 22.5K, ayam penyet paha 13K, 1 penyet komplit kecil (ayam penyet, tahu & tempe penyet + bakwan) 31K, with es cao 5K, es lemon soda jumbo 9K. The service was quite good and we didn't have to wait too long for our orders. SC's iga penyet was delicious, tender and the sambal is not spicy at all as he requested. My penyet komplit was also satifying. The sambal was spicy, but not as spicy as the ones at Tekko or Leko. I was also quite surprised to find that bakwan is actually what I know as bakso (meat ball), not some meat/prawn/vegetables fritter. Overall, it was a delightful meal and we're looking foward to visit this place again :)

This Ramadhan season, we're craving for Padangnese dishes near Senen's flyover. One of our friends suggested that we try Ibu Kaca Mata. So one friday night, we went there around 9PM, late enough to avoid the fast-breaking rush. However, when we arrived, Ibu Kacamata had already closed her stall, so we went to the well-known Uni Upik instead. I ordered my usual rendang bebek hitam with rice 24K. I was disappointed to find that it was not as good as I've remembered. The dishes tasted a bit bland for my taste buds. I guess we'll try other places next time.

Zenya

Last weekend, we're spending some time in Djakarta Theatre waiting for Friday night traffic to resolve. While waiting, we tried this restaurant called Zenya, which looks to be reasonably priced (we scanned the menu before going in) and offered discount if we pay with BCA credit card. So we went inside and ordered: chuka idako (baby octopus with special sauce), dobin mushi 20K, mini donburi oyakodon 45K that came with a bowl of wakame udon and nandos (sushi containing softshell crab, unagi, cream cheese, avocado and mayonaise). Overall the meal was good. The oyakodon was a bit too sweet for my taste, but the udon was delicious. The fusion sushi was decent, although they seemed to use shaved cheese instead of cream cheese. The price is much more reasonable than En, so it was worth to try. :)

En Japanese Dining Bar
Posted by jeny at 6:40 PM
2 Weeks ago, I went to meet SC at Plaza Indonesia and we decided to get something to eat before heading home. After deliberating for a while, we picked En Japanese Dining Bar. When we entered, the place was quite empty as it was still 5 PM. The interior has a chic minimalist style, but the lighting is a bit too dark for my taste :) The restaurant serves Okinawan cuisine that is influenced quite strongly by Chinese cuisine. No wonder we found a number of Chinese dishes in the menu.

En Japanese Dining Bar

We ordered Mabou Tofu (stir fried tofu served with minced pork) 49K and Suchika (broiled pork marinated with salt and served with lemon) 55K to go with gohan (steamed rice) 12K and ocha 12K. To be honest, the mabo tofu tasted decent but not superb and I was very disappointed to find the Suchika looking like deep-fried thin slices of pork belly and tasted so salty that we might mistake it for ikan asin goreng had we not read the menu. And most of all, we felt the restaurant was too pricey. With such prices I can get a heavenly meal at Ootoya and furthermore, their genmaicha is free.

Warung Leko

The next day, we returned to the same row of shophouses in PIK, wanting to try other restaurants in the area. Our first stop was Bakmi Tan, which wasn't successful (23K for a bowl of so so wonton noodle) :( After that, I insisted to go to Warung Leko. As the weather wasn't too hot, we chose to sit outside and ordered a portion of Iga Penyet (spicy) 25K with es cincao 5K and es susu tarik 5.5K. It didn't take too long for our orders to arrive. From the looks of it, Leko's portion size is more generous than Tekko's. The meat was also tender, but Leko uses less spice so we can still taste the meat's flavor. The chili was bearable this time, but that's because I don't have enough courage to order the super hot chili sauce :D. Overall, we liked this place better than Warung Tekko.

Warung Tekko

2 weeks ago, we went to Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) to try the famous iga penyet. We arrived at the row of shophouses across PIK's Waterboom just around lunch time. There are two restaurants specializing in Iga Penyet at the area: Warung Tekko and Warung Leko. Both have the same outdoor and indoor seating, both have the same typeface & style on their logo, and both were crowded. So we decided to try Warung Tekko first.

Warung Tekko

We chose the indoor seating as it's still hot outside. The waitress who took the order called me tante :(( Anyway, We ordered a portion of Iga Penyet (super pedas) 25K, Lidah Sapi Penyet (tidak pedas) 15K, Terong Penyet with two portions of rice. The meal came not long after we ordered. They looked appetizing and the portions were moderate. My super hot and spicy ribs, tasted heavenly. The meat was tender and the "super pedas" moniker was not kidding. It tasted so hot that I actually had tears in my eyes. SC's ox tounge was also satisfying. Next, we will try the Iga Penyet next door. :)

Bubur Kwang Tung
Posted by jeny at 4:32 AM
Last weekend, we went to Pecenongan to dine at the famous Bubur Kwang Tung. It's been so long since our last visit. The decor remained roughly the same. A typical Chinese-style restaurant with rather tacky celebrity photos paraded along the wall. As usual, we asked for a non-smoking area and was directed to the second floor which was still empty. I'm pretty sure Bubur Kwangtung has no non-smoking area and we were led to the second floor only because it was empty.
Bubur Kwangtung
We ordered the famous crab congee 45K and a portion of tahu special ala Kwang Tung 25K to share. The congee came in a large portion, more than enough for two. It was cooked in broth and the cracked crab was placed in the middle of the bowl with lots and lots of crab egg. The accompanying condiments were ginger, chili and soy sauce. Still delicious (and consistent) after all these years. The tahu special was also great, much more delicious than the one we had at Dharma Kitchen, although we would have preferred that they used ordinary tofu instead of Japanese egg tofu :)

Dharma Kitchen

2 weeks ago, we had lunch at a vegetarian restaurant called Dharma Kitchen. The first floor is occupied by a vegetarian bakery & cafe, while the second floor is for the restaurant. We chose to sit at the cafe. There are two seating areas, the tatami area and tables area. The waitress gave us two sets of menu, one from the cafe & one from the restaurant. After studying the menu, we ordered tahu gulung special (regular) 38K and tahu jamur special 48K to go with nasi hainam polos 6K and ice tea (refill) 4K. The Hainamnese rice & ice tea were served 5 minutes after we ordered, but the other dishes and white rice took almost 25 minutes to appear. The tahu jamur special is tofu topped with green vegetables and mushroom with brown sauce. The taste was barely acceptable and the tofu have a strong soybean-ish smell (bau langu). On the other hand, the tahu gulung special is quite good. It didn't have that soybean smell, probably because it's deep fried. As for the Hainamnese chicken rice, I think they put too much sesame oil in it. Overall, I think vegetarian restaurant doesn't suit my taste :P

3 weeks ago, we tried this fancy restaurant located at Plaza Senayan. Upon arrival, each of us were given a card to be stamped when we order. If the card is lost, the restaurant will charge 1 million rupiah that will be given to charity. The interior and atmosphere of this place is quite interesting as it looks like a fresh food market somewhere in Europe. Marche uses wooden furnitures and pictures of farm life to create a cozy atmosphere, but it comes off as more artificial than real.

Pizza Boutique

3 weeks ago, SC & I planned to watch UP at Plaza Indonesia. Before movie, we usually grabbed something to eat first. Our choice that time was Pizza Boutique located at Plaza Indonesia's Extension. It was too early for dinner, so the place was somewhat empty. I ordered some mushroom cooked in butter and our favorite kind of pizza: Quattro Formaggi (pizza topped with four types of cheese). In Pizza Boutique, they put cheddar, mozarella, ricotta and feta on top of the pizza. It tasted OK but I think it was a bit too salty because of the liberal use of feta cheese. However, the mushroom is quite a disappointment, as it came drenched in a lot of butter. Overall, I think this place is overrated and pricey and I'm not interested in what they called gourmet pizza/dessert pizza.

Sate Jaya Agung

2 weeks ago, we tried this restaurant at the junction of Wahid Hasyim and Sabang street. Jaya Agung seems to be quite popular because everytime we passed the area, it was jammed with people. Actually, we've dined here early last year and came away unimpressed. But so many people couldn't be all wrong, could they? So we decided to give it a second try. We ordered 1/2 portion of mutton satay 14K, 1/2 portion of chicken satay 7K and a bowl of gulai kambing (mutton cooked in coconut milk soup and spices) 13K. The verdict? We're still unimpressed and this time, it's even worse than our previous experience. The satay meat felt cold and tough, some were even undercooked, while the bland peanut sauce added nothing to the overall taste. The gule kambing was no better. It was thin and watery with too much fat. I guess this is the last time we go to this place. :(

Last month, we tried a new restaurant called Fat Ya at Plaza Indonesia. It's the newest restaurant coming from the same management that runs Duck King as well. The interior is quite interesting with duck figures on the wall that look like they're lifted from south park cartoon. However, the place was quite noisy as there are a few large speakers about 10 meters away, blaring whatever tunes the mall DJs were playing at the moment.

Java Bleu
Posted by jeny at 9:26 PM
I've been wanting to visit Java Bleu for a long time, but never found the opportunity to go to Fatmawati area. Several weeks ago, a friend informed us that Java Bleu has opened a new outlet in Cikini. So last weekend, we decided to have dinner there with a friend. The restaurant is located on the second floor of Cafe au Lait, only several doors away from Bakoel Kopi and Vietopia. We asked for the non smoking section as usual and were pleased to find that the smoking and non-smoking sections are physically separate. The menu is written in a big blackboard that the waiter wheeled in front of us.

Java Bleu

So we ordered Escargot with Herb Butter 38K for appetizer and for the main course we ordered: Home Made Duck Confit 120K, Ox Tongue "Bourgeoise" 75K and Home made Pork Sausage Creole 72K. For desserts we chose: black & white melt chocolate with ice cream 29K and Creme Caramel 24K. For the drinks we chose: Iced Lemon Tea with Vanilla Pod 16K and Lemonade with Fresh Mint 18K. The escargot came first accompanied with bread that we used to clean the sauce. The appearance may not be appetizing, but it was surely the best escargot I've ever had so far. The garlic & parsley butter was generous, and the taste is balanced, not too salty. The main courses were served with a delicious potato gratin and watercress salad. The ox tongue was cooked to perfection, while the duck confit (confit de canard) was so tender. The sauces in each main dishes was also delicious. My least favorite dish that night was the sausage, but it was by no means terrible. The cream caramel is a tad sweeter for my taste buds, but the black and white melt chocolate is just perfect. Overall, we had a great time there. The service was friendly and the price was reasonable. :)

Fish & Chips

From Die Stube, we moved to our next destination. Still in Kemang area, there's a small joint that sells only Fish & Chips. There isn't even a parking space so SC had to park at La Codefin building behind the joint. He knew this place since 2000, back when he worked right across Fish & Chips. After reading a review here, he was dying to go there again. The menu is divided into several sections: Fish & Chips (admiral 48K, captaens 38K and sailors 25K), Burgers, side orders (potato scallops, onion ring), juices, milk shake & thick shake. Considering that we're still full, we only ordered the 'Captaens' fish and chips (80gr imported dori fish and the golden crispy home made chips) to share. I have to admit that this is the best fish & chips I've ever had. The fish was fresh, and the batter was crispy, and the chips was also not bad. We surely look forward to return to this place. :)

I've wanted to visit Mbah Jingkrak ever since they were still located at Bulungan, but I didn't have the chance as SC doesn't like spicy food. More than two years later, after they have moved to Setiabudi Tengah, I finally succeeded to drag SC to Mbah Jingkrak. The place was quite crowded when we arrived. It seems to be a house that is converted into a restaurant. In the main room, there is a buffet table with an array of Javanese dishes to choose from. There were also a tray with glasses of "Beras kencur" as welcome drink.

Lately, kopi tiam (coffee shop) seems to have become a trend as new stores are opening left and right in the past few months. So we were curious about Lau's Kopitiam which has just opened at Emporium Mall Pluit. They offer a number of light meals, such as cakwe 5K, lumpia goreng 10K, pangsit goreng 10K, telur rebus setengah matang 5K and also heartier menus like sandwiches, mie, kwetiaw & bihun, rice dishes. It was quite crowded when we arrived. Since we've just had lunch with SC's parents, we only ordered regular kaya toast 12K with teh susu (milk tea) 10K. The kaya toast tasted delicious with old style thick bread and kaya/srikaya jam (made from coconut milk, egg and caramelized sugar). The milk tea was good too, although I suspected that they were using Lipton milk tea. :)

Two weeks ago, we had dinner with several friends at The Apartment, a unique restaurant designed to resemble a large apartment unit with foyer, living room, kitchen, study and bathroom. I called first to make a reservation and was told that there are 2 seating shifts during weekend, where the first shift lasts until 9 PM. We agreed to take the first shift. I also asked for the non-smoking room and turned out that the only non-smoking room in the apartment is the bathroom. We arrived early and were promptly ushered to our table. The bathroom is decorated in green tiles, complete with bathroom accessories and bathtub. I took some time to explore the restaurant room by room and I loved it. :)

Teo Chew Palace
Posted by jeny at 5:52 PM
2 months ago, I was quite keen to try this new place because since its opening, Teo Chew Palace has been very crowded. More over, there was a 30% discount for BCA credit card. So one night, SC & I tried it. We ordered teochew porridge, and kwetiaw siram seafood for SC. The place was quite full and we felt that we were being ignored as we had to nag several times for our meal & drinks. My teochew porridge looked and tasted disappointing. The one I had at Pancawarna tasted much better (and much cheaper too) than this one. SC's kwetiaw was just OK, nothing special. After we finished our meal, we asked for our bill and it turned out that our bill have to reach 100K after discount. Othewise, we couldn't get the discount. So we ordered a dessert (mango sago) which fortunately tasted good.

After that not so successful experience, I still came back here with my high school friends just to try their dimsum. I called ahead to reserve, but were told that they can't provide reservation on weekend. Luckily, we can get a table. We ordered several kinds of dishes that were brought by passing carts, some of the dimsum tasted good (their egg tart was delicious), some was only so so, and we still have to nag several times for our drink. Overall, I think this place is overrated, The price of the dimsum we had after the discount was not that cheap either compared to other dimsum places in Jakarta.

Pizza e Birra
Posted by jeny at 11:24 AM

Pizza e Birra is the latest restaurant from Ismaya group. We tried it about two month ago when they have just opened for several weeks. As usual with Ismaya group's restaurants, the interior is cool. I love the rustic ambience of this place. It has high ceiling with large warehouse windows. They serve what they called fusion pizza, so we ordered: fish and chips 35K and our favorite: quatro formaggi pizza 45K with Ice lemon tea 18K. The Fish and chips came in a paper cone and was delicious, although we decided to transfer them onto our plates before eating, since we couldn't figure out how to eat it from the paper cone without creating a mess. The pizza was also OK. I've always liked thin-crusted pizza with four types of cheese on it. :)

Soup Restaurant

Soup restaurant

Years ago, I've visited this place when they were still located at Plaza Semanggi. The restaurant specializes in Chinese-style soups and some of the soups featured in their menu were said to be good for health. However, since they moved to Plaze Indonesia, I haven't had the chance to visit again. Last month, when we happened to be at Plaza Indonesia, we passed Soup Restaurant. I scanned their menu and was suprised to find that the price is very reasonable. We decided to have dinner there and ordered Teochew olive rice (teochew black olive mixed with rice) 28K, kwetiaw siram, and their soup of the day 40K plus chinese tea. The soup came in the claypot as we ordered the medium size for 2. We were surprise to find the portion to be quite generous and the taste was simply delicious. The soup is clear wintermelon soup. My olive rice came in a rattan basket lined with plastic sheet. The taste was so delicious, I didn't even want to share this with SC. SC's kwetiaw was also decent.

Ottimo Deli
Posted by jeny at 12:45 PM
Last month, we visited this small place at Menteng area called Ottimo Deli. The place is a combination of a (very) small grocery, delicatessen, and pastry/cake counter, with only 2 tables for 4 people. Before we went here, I've googled this place and found out that its specialty is tiramisu. So I ordered the tiramisu 25K and SC chose their Italian chocolate cake. I'm not impressed with their tiramisu. The portion was small and the taste was mediocre at best. I much prefer the tiramisu at Coffee tree than this one.

Earlier this month, we had dimsum at this restaurant as they offer 50% discount on their anniversary. The restaurant is located on the second floor of Batavia hotel. The place is spacious, with some big private room as well. The menu is more or less the usual dimsum fare we've always had. We ordered: bubur ikan 25K, chiongfan udang 13.8K, pangsit kucai udang 12.8K, mie urat sapi 28.8K, kaki ayam 11.8K, puff panggang 12.8K, siomay 6.4K, chiongfan chasiu 12.8K, eggtart 11.8K, pangsit talas 11.8K, xiao long bao 13.8K, hakau 13.8K, udang telor asin 94K. In my opinion, most of the dishes were only so so, nothing special. But the worst part of our experience is the service. It took more than 15 minutes for each dish to appear. I don't think we're going to visit this place again.

Toba Tabo
Posted by jeny at 12:50 PM
Last month, we had a late lunch at Toba Tabo, a popular, upscale version of the common lapo Batak. The place is spacious, nicely designed with a number of Bataknese items and posters of its owner, Viki Sianipar. It was almost empty as we got there at 3 pm, so we can easily get a table. The menu is a bit more extensive than ordinary lapos and we ordered: panggang 19.8K, naniura 16K, soup isi 6K, daun singkong 6K, terong tauco 6K. This is the first time I tasted Naniura (Bataknese style raw fish). The taste was great, with a strong hint of lime. But I don't quite like the texture as it is too chewy. The other dishes were also good. The rice we ordered came in a little bakul, and as I looked closer, I was pleasantly surprised to find salted fish in the rice. In my opinion, this place is good enough for someone who want to sample Bataknese dishes in a more elegant setting. As for me, I still prefer the atmosphere of lapo Batak at Senayan :)

Noah Café

Papaya is our favorite Japanese supermarket, but we've never known that on the 2nd floor of Papaya, there is a Papaya-managed cafe that serves quite delicious dishes. They serve western menu in Japanese style. That night, on a recommendation of a friend, we went there straight after dinner at Nakayoshi. The menu is quite extensive, but since we just had our dinner, we only ordered hamburger steak 75K, miso ramen with onigiri 54.5K, omurice (japanese fried rice wrapped in a thin sheet of fried egg) 54K, warabimochi set (Japanese sweet dessert made from warabi starch dipped in kinako (sweet toasted soybean flour)) 27K and ice coffee float 26K & maccha frappuccino 29K to share. Overall, the dishes tasted much better than what we had just eaten at Nakayoshi. I liked the omurice and the miso ramen is also great. The warabi mochi came with a bowl of macha tea to stabilize the sweet flavor, a bit unusual, but in a positive way. I can't wait to go back there again :)

Nakayoshi
Posted by jeny at 12:25 PM
Last month, along with several friends, I tried this little Japanese restaurant at Wijaya area that serves Japanese fusion cuisine. The restaurant is actually a house in which its living room has been converted into a dining area, so the place is small and can only comfortably hold about 30 persons. When we arrived, the place was quite empty with no waiter/waitress around. After a while, someone came and give us the menu book. We ordered: agedashi tofu (Japanese fried tofu in broth) 19K, healthy dinner set deluxe 1 77K which include: wafu salada (Wakame (sea weed), katsuo bushi (dry fish spread) ,carrot, and other vegetables served with sweet and sour dressing), Shio Jake Foiyaki Set (Salted salmon fish fried & baked in aluminium foil, served with "daikon oroshi" (soy sauce & radish)), Ogura ice cream and a pot of hot/cold ocha. Special Sukiyaki dinner set 55K (A hot pot of personal sukiyaki: shirataki (japanese vermicelli), Beef, shun-giku leaf, tofu, shiitake (mushroom) and spring onion), Yakimeshi dinner set 45K which came with Chicken tulip kara age (Deep fried chicken wings), Russian burger (Japanese style home made burger with cheese inside the burger) 36K. In my opinion, overall taste of the dishes here was just average, but much more authentic than Hoka Hoka Bento. The agedashi tofu looks weird (drenched in soup), the shio jake foiyaki was actually quite good, but it was a bit too salty, we have to eat it with rice. My main concern is that it looks like the restaurant only employs one waiter to serve. The dish took so long to appear and we're still feeling hungry after we finished all the meal. :P

Kopi Tiam Oey

Kopi Tiam Oey

Last month, we stopped by this newly opened coffee shop owned by Bondan Winarno called Kopi Tiam Oey located on Sabang road (near Holland Bakery). The exterior and interior of this place is very interesting, designed to resemble old peranakan coffee shops. The interior has a warm ambience and the wall is full of chinese vintage posters. The lamp shades are made from sangkar burung covered with a piece of red cloth. It is beautiful, but to be honest, all the real kopitiam I saw back in my home town/other places looked very bland compared to this place. It's nice to know that Kopi Tiam Oey forbids smoking inside its premise. Only a single table is provided outside for smokers.

I found this charming restaurant by accident a few months ago near Four Seasons Hotel. It grabbed my attention the second I passed by with its high colonial windows reflecting the warmth of the interior inside. So a week later, I decided to have lunch here with several friends. The place was not crowded when I arrived, I easily got a table. The interior design is cozy and charming, with an open kitchen in the middle of the room. There is also an alfresco lounge with cozy couches that looks great for hanging out after work.

Decanter
Posted by jeny at 10:37 AM
Last night, I managed to drag SC to Decanter, a wine house located at Kuningan area. Although we don't drink, I heard that the meal served there is quite good, so I decided to try it. SC has been unwilling to visit Decanter because the place is very smoker friendly. So we tried to arrive early (a little after 6PM) while the place was still empty. I like the design, as it is spacious, very earthy with broken brick floor, paneled wall, wooden table & seat with plants everywhere. The ceiling is designed to resemble a starry sky with hundred of small light bulbs. I love it although SC wondered how much electricity is consumed to light up those bulbs.

Kerak Telor Menteng
Posted by jeny at 11:17 AM
After a less than satisfying dinner at Seribu Rasa, we went to Menteng area to try other food. We had a short stop at Marzano for their baked mushroom with cheese. Sadly, what we've gotten was a bitter, watery cheese poured over limp mushroom. It's the worst baked mushroom I've ever tasted. We then crossed the street and found a Kerak Telor seller, which is highly recommended by a foodie friend. Kerak telor is a traditional Betawi snack that has been marginalized in recent years and become quite hard to find in Jakarta. It consists of sticky rice, eggs (duck/chicken egg), kelapa sangrai (toasted grated coconut), ebi (fried and salted prawn), fried shallot, plus some spices. The surest way to find kerak telor sellers is during June - July in a yearly Jakarta Fair festivities at Kemayoran. So, we ordered a portion and watched the seller made this unique dish. The kerak telor he made tasted very different from other kerak telors I've tried. It was delicious and savory from the generous topping, a combination of sweet, salty & spicy (depending on how much chili you've specified for the dish). I'll be back :)

Seribu Rasa
Posted by jeny at 9:47 AM
Last month we had dinner with several friends at a new hip restaurant called Seribu Rasa. I tried to make reservation in the morning, but the woman handling my call said that the place is already fully booked. She suggested that we go there earlier (6 PM) to avoid the queue. So we arrived there at 6 PM sharp when the place was still empty. We parked in the semi basement and went up the stairs to the restaurant. The dining area is separated by an inner garden. I love the design of this place as it felt like we're not in the middle of crowded Jakarta but somewhere else calmer. We easily got a table and started thumbing through the menu. A few moments later, our friends arrived and we started to order.

Seribu Rasa

We ordered Lumpia Crab Mabuhay 27K, Kerabu Mangga Melayu 24K, Soft Shell Crab 57K, Ayam Goreng ala Binjai 45K, Tauco Tahu Udang Pete 42K and Apel Keju Dapur Nyonya 29K for dessert. From the drinks menu, we ordered Semilir Berastagi 28K, Thai Ice Tea 21K and Kopyor Rose 24K. To be honest, I liked the interiors more than the food. The dishes tasted only so so, not bad, but not to die for either. The portions are small although they looked pretty. The Lumpia crab was OK and I liked the Kerabu mangga, which was sour and spicy. Their ayam goreng Binjai tasted more like a failed version of ayam lada garam and according to my friend looked nothing like the authentic ayam goreng Binjai.

Ketoprak Pak Mukthar Tanjung Duren
Posted by jeny at 10:27 AM
Last month I was craving for ketoprak Tanjung Duren. We were there once before, but it was 10 PM and they were already sold out. So one night, I made plans with SC to meet at Mall Taman Anggrek and go straight to the ketoprak location. Lucky for us, this time they were still open, with several people gathered around the place waiting patiently. We ordered 2 portions of Ketoprak, one with fried egg and lots of chili 9K and one the standard portion (without egg) 6K. We have to wait for at least 15 minutes before our orders arrived. Luckily, it was worth the wait. The ketoprak was simply delicious with fresh ingredients: rice cake topped with bihun (thin rice noodle), bean sprout, fried egg, potato, and then poured with spicy peanut sauce. Their keropok was also of good quality. Although its appearance may not be appetizing to some, I like this kaki lima ketoprak very much.

Ikan Goreng Cianjur
Posted by jeny at 9:31 AM
Last month, we had dinner with several friends at Ikan Goreng Cianjur on Greenville housing complex (across Jakarta fruit store). They serve Sundanese dishes with reasonable prices. The interior is simple and clean. We ordered Nasi Liwet (Sundanese savory rice cooked in panci kastrol) 23K to share, ikan gurame goreng 40K, terong penyet 12K, udang sambal ebi 20K, tahu goreng 6K, tempe goreng 6K, pete goreng 8K, kangkung terasi 16K, sambal terasi 3K and sambal mangga 6K. Turned out some of the dishes came with a small portion of chili sauce, so we were surrounded with several plates of chili sauces. Their Nasi Liwet was delicious and the other dishes were quite good too, except for their udang sambal ebi, which appeared different from what was shown in the menu (I guess they used baby "pancet" prawn) and tasted only so so. Overall, I feel that this kind of food would taste better if we eat with hands, sitting at a meadow with hilly views, just like the one I had at Selabintana, Sukabumi, several years ago. :)

Makasar Seafood Pelangi
Posted by jeny at 7:00 PM
Last month we had dinner with Nath at Seafood Pelangi on Wahid Hasyim street. I've been wanting to visit this place since I read the review in Kuliner: Rayuan Pulau Kelapa 2, but I hesitated since the book stated that ths place has a free smoking policy. After a friend ensured us that they have a smoke-free private room, I dragged SC there. The place serves Makasar style seafood which can be categorized in Chinese food (soups), seafood (fish, prawn, crab), vegetables & hot menu which are several selections of Makasar traditional menu. We ordered: Ikan kue bakar, lawara unti (jantung pisang / banana's blossom) 10K, acar ikan tuing tuing 15K. There were otak otak ikan (grilled fish cakes) @4.5K served on the table. We tried a piece and decided that we prefer the one sold at Muara Karang. The fish came with three types of chili sauces (mango sauces, red chili sauces, and slices of bird eyes chilis with green tomato). The third one tasted really really hot. The fish was OK - it tasted too sweed for my taste buds. Maybe next time I'll order the fish in rica-rica style instead. The lawara unti tasted delicious and reminded me a little of Balinese lawar. In my opinion, the most delicious thing in here is their acar telur ikan tuing tuling. It tasted so fresh, although SC & Nath can't stand its chewy crunchy texture. I like it very much :)

Last month, we had dinner with several friends at Kwetiaw goreng Singapore Pluit. We've been here several times and each time, their kwetiaw goreng kerang never disappoints despite its petite portion. The place is always full during lunch and dinner time, so it's better to make a reservation beforehand. That night we ordered: Udang Cioyam (lada garam) L : 115K, Tiram Goreng Telor L : 36.2K, Lumpia Udang L : 56.2K, Kwetiaw Gr Kerang : 20K, Cah Than M : 29.2K, Sop Seafood Bamboo Mushroom L : 54.2K, Ayam Gr Garing L : 58.2K, Kepiting Soka L : 60.2K. and for dessert we ordered Es Campur Solo :13K. In my opinion, besides their kwetiaw kerang, all other dishes were OK though not really superb. Based on our experience, their cumi cioyam tastes better than their udang cioyam. Their dessert, es campur Solo is also good. :)

On our last night in Jakarta, I managed to persuade my parents to treat us out at Gyu-kaku, the odd Japanese/Korean barbecue place serving grilled parts of wagyu beef. We picked their Pacific Place outlet. We entered the dark foyer to rows of booth and opted for one of them for privacy although the main dining room looks airier and brighter.

I love the intimate décor, which plays with spot lighting and dark wood. The restaurant was smoke-free too despite boasting an authentic charcoal barbecue on each table because their machine sucked the air from beneath the charcoal bucket instead of from the above. It worked. I didn't smell like smoked beef after dinner.

At Pacific Place last month, I spotted a new place next to Aksara bookstore called Canteen. It looks cozy with tall ceiling, brick wall and warm atmosphere. Unfortunately, the place is full of smokers and SC refused to go there when I asked him to accompany me. Luckily, I spotted several tables in front of Aksara (an increasingly typical treatment for non-smokers). The menu consists of western cuisine: soup, salad, pasta&rice, sandwich, pizza, main course, desserts. I also saw several asian dishes on the menu. Several dishes in the menu are quite interesting, such as fish en papilotte 60K, crispy chicken roll 55K, classic duck confit 55K, penne arabbiata with crab 55K.

A coffee-holic friend of ours has just opened his own coffee stall at Terminal 2 Soekarno Hatta International Airport. We decided to try it one day while we're picking up friends. After a bit of a search, we found the place near 3E departure gate (next to Coffee Bean). He named his stall eskopi offering iced coffee with various flavors such as: cappuccino 13K, kahlua 15K, tiramisu 15K, mocha 15K, karamel 15K, coklat mint 16K, pisang coklat 16K, kacang coklat 16K & classic ice coffee 10K. Besides that, they also offered non-coffee beverages such as: es coklat 15K, es coklat mint 16K, es pisang coklat karamel 16K, es sirup mint 16K. We ordered their ice coffee coklat mint 16K. Admittedly, I'm not much of a coffee person, but I quite like this kind of coffee. It tasted light and not too sweet, with the mint flavor adding a bit of a kick. Compared to the major brands of coffeeshops, I prefer this one. The only downside is that we had to go to the airport for a sip. I hope they will open another branch downtown :)

The place was bursting with people having quick lunches in between their christmas shopping. After wandering for a while, we found Papaco's stall and got a table nearby. I ordered a portion of Tomyam seafood with kuetiau/flat rice noodle (forgot how much it cost.. about 20K-25K if i'm not mistaken). The dish was served almost immediately, but I had to nag for a spoon and extra cilantro. It tasted descent, but not spicy enough. I think Mama Kithen serves a much better Tomyam than this place.

Pan-o

Last month, we had a quick lunch at Pan-O before the chocolate appreciation class. It's a new pancake restaurant at FX lifestyle center and as predicted, stationed the non-smoker outside of the restaurant *hiks*. We ordered their three stack original pancake with maple syrup, one fancy pancake called kyoto (grilled chicken, tomatoes, chicken ham, oyster mushroom and mozarella, served with rolled pancake and mashed potato) 50K and berry ice drinks. Their original pancake tasted quite good, although not as good as the pancake in Pancious. Their fusion / fancy pancake tasted is just mediocre, though the drink was nice. Overall, I think this place is overpriced with standard pancake.

Last month, we noticed a new restaurant next to Urban Kitchen at Pacific Place. It's the same Japanese restaurant that has opened earlier at Senayan City, but we haven't had a chance to try it. A week later, while we're at Pacific Place again we decided to dine there. The restaurant is spacious with minimalist decor, but still feels warm and comfortable. The service was flawless. We're given hot towels for refreshment as soon as we arrived and the waiter asked if we want cold ocha or hot ocha. Turned out that ocha is free in this restaurant. The tea they used is one of my favorite Japanese tea, genmaicha, which has a faint aroma of roasted rice. The menu is exciting as there are no sushi or sashimi. Instead, we were presented with a list of dishes they claimed as Japanese home cooking. We ordered their fried eggplant vinegar sauce 20K, rice cooked with oyster set menu served in bamboo basket 79K, and cold soba served in wooden tray 35K. Turned out the dishes was very delicious. I love my fragrant rice topped with oyster, and SC was enjoying his cold soba.

Several days later, we're back again with friends. This time, we ordered their cold tofu 18K (I love it so much), tofu & egg soup 55K (so comforting), hot udon in wakame soup 39K (also great). We're enjoying our time there so much, we went back there again a week later with another couple of friends. This time we ordered Natto 15K (I'm not really into this thing, although SC said it's not that bad), rice with roasted chicken with plum & egg soup 59K (very hearty meal), charcoal grilled chicken salad in basil sauce 69K (perfect), while my friends ordered rice with fried beef served with kimchi 79K (very tasty according to her) and fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce 69K (I didn't taste this one, but it looked promising). Overall I think we'll be back again, dragging even more friends :P as long as they can keep their menu's authenticity :)

Last month, we're meeting several friends at Mal Kelapa Gading. We had planned to go to Eat & Eat, but later decided to go to this recently opened joint instead. The place was very crowded when we arrived. It is a very interesting restaurant. At the front is a warung selling all kinds of old-fashioned stuffs we used to see in childhood, but rarely seen today, from snacks, toys to old kitchenware (of course with premium prices). The restaurant itself was designed to resemble an old-style warung peranakan with a number of vintage chinese pictures on the wall.

Several weeks ago, on our way to Kelapa Gading, we stopped by a Manado restaurant for lunch. I've always liked Manado dishes because it was very hot & spicy. The restaurant was empty as lunch time had passed hours ago and maybe because that day was a public holiday. There was no decor to speak of. The place looked spartan: old but clean. There were several displayed dishes. I chose Tinorangsak (Manado's spicy pork dishes) 40K and SC who can't stand spicy food settled on Brenebon soup (Manado's kidney bean soup) 40K. Yes, it's not cheap, but the portion made up for the price. We even had to take a doggie back. The taste was delicious and I think it's authentic. The woman serving us was very friendly and I ended up buying some rica-rica and panada home. :)

Cosi
Posted by jeny at 5:59 PM
Last month, after office hours, we visited Cosi, a restaurant located inside FX lifestyle Xnter. We've been to Cosi several times at their Pluit branch and in my memory it was not bad. We asked for a non-smoking area, and unsurprisingly, were ushered to a table outside near the escalator. Although designated as non-smoking, the location still smelled, probably caused by smoke coming from inside the restaurant or the chain smokers sitting on Segafredo's second floor. Cosi calls itself a Hongkong and Macau cafe, serving Macau snack, Hongkong BBQ, Macau Curry, Portuguese styled baked rice, Hong Kong street food, Designer Congee, La Mian and Macaroni, Sandwich & Bun, thick toast and Western hot plate.

Leaving Cafe De Paris, we walked several blocks to Plaza Bisnis Kemang. At the back of the building, right next to Die Stube restaurant (will try this next time), is a French Crêperies. The room was quite dark, decorated in red classic wallpaper wth several vintage posters on the wall. I felt like I were on Moulin Rouge's movie set. This place is famous for their home made ice cream, sorbet and crepes, but they also serve several kinds of savory dishes.

Three weeks ago, we were around Kemang area looking for light dinner, and we decided to try Cafe de Paris. Cafe de Paris has just recently moved to the second floor of La Codefin building. The place is small, but warmly welcoming with French ambience. We ordered their escargot 35K and onion soup 19K. We didn't order any dessert as we're planning to have dessert somewhere else later. They gave us a basket of bread. The escargot was cooked in garlic & butter sauce. The taste was quite good and the price can be considered very reasonable for French dishes. I like the escargot and the onion soup, although the latter was a bit too salty. We'll definitely be back for more.

Last weekend, we attended a chocolate appreciation class (80K on Sundays, 65K on Tuesdays and Thursdays) held at Creole chocolaterie patisserie. As it was impossible for me to join during weekdays, we booked for sunday session instead. The place is small but warm and cozy. Upon arriving, each of us was given a cup of Belgian chocolate brew and a bottle of mineral water. The class was taught by Jose 'Joy' Pelo (a Filipino who taught at culinary school in Australia). He began the class with a story about the origin of chocolate. We got to sniff and taste an array of chocolate prepared in a small plates. We tasted compound chocolate, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, milk chocolate, and chocolate containing 43%, 64%, 71%, and even 94% cocoa mass. I can only tolerate the 64% dark chocolate as the 71% & 94% tasted too bitter for me.

Still in a mood for Japananese food, we tried another Japanese restaurant at FX Sudirman. The place was quite crowded on Friday night, luckily we can get a seat at the non-smoking section inside the restaurant. It always irritates me when a restaurant puts its non-smoking section outside, because that means they are saving the best seats for smokers inside. Anyway, whenever we're in a Japanese restaurant, I always looked for donburi while SC always looked for cold soba. So we ordered Zaru Soba (brown wheat soba sprinkled with seaweed) 45K, Chirashi Don (slices of tuna and salmon sashimi, grilled unagi and tamago on sushi rice) 57.3K from the menu. The presentation of the food was very appealing, but to me the taste was only so so. My chirashi don topping didn't taste very fresh and the rice was too salty. SC's cold soba was quite delicious though he said it was just average and prefers the one at Midori :)

Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi
Posted by jeny at 6:33 AM
Last week, SC noticed a new restaurant at Taman Palem Lestari Boulevard's "restaurant row". The place is called Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi. I'm so excited when I heard about it and we decided to try it first thing in the morning the next day. The place was already open at 6am, perfect for breakfast. We came in and ordered a portion of nasi tim with a raw free-range chicken egg on top (19K). The rice was served alongside a plate of cilantro and a bowl of soup. I quickly mixed the egg with the rice, resulting in a sort of creamy texture. I never had nasi tim with raw egg before and to me, it tasted so delicious. I don't like the mushy type of nasi tim, so this kind of nasi tim is perfect for me since I can still feel the rice grain. The price was quite expensive compared to the one we usually had, but I thought it was worth my every rupiah. Btw, they also serve chicken noodle, rice noodle, sui kiaw, pangsit, somay, mie kangkung, baso goreng, otak-otak, tahu baso, baso sapi & various traditional cake. But I think I'll be back for their heavenly nasi tim. :)

It has been a long time since we last visited Kiyadon. I've always liked Kiyadon for their donburi. So two weeks ago, when I was craving for another bowl of Kiyadon's donburi, we went to their joint at Pacific Place. The place is spacious, with faked tatami seater. The menu is quite varied, from appetizer & salad, sushi, sashimi, set menu, ala carte menu, nabemono, agemono, noodle dishes (udon/soba), donburi & pasta. I ordered Kinoko Don (rice bowl topped with mushroom onion and egg) special 53K. the dish came with salad, and a small plate of cold wheat soba. The dish tasted exquisite, I love the donburi so much, too bad the portion was quite small. Although the price is not cheap, I'll still return from time to time.

Ketupat Gorengan Bang Alex
Posted by jeny at 5:33 AM
This gorengan is my newest favorite dish. It's located on jalan Panjang near Bumbu Desa restaurant. Its appearance is nothing like the gorengan we usualy eat as afternoon snack. This dish consists of beef offal (daging, babat, iso, paru, urat, torpedo, etc.) cooked in coconut milk in a huge wok. It is very tasty and usually served with Betawi style ketupat sayur or nasi uduk. I prefer the ketupat sayur more since it's quite sweet and nicely balanced the savory gorengan. If you want it to be more spicy, try adding some of their peanut chilli sauce. To me it tasted perfect. :)

Two weeks ago we had lunch with RJ at a restaurant called Milan located in Greenville area. The place serves various Bangka dishes, such as Lempah Ikan Nanas, Lempah Bakut, Lakso, Bakmi Bangka, Cumi panggang cocolan Trasi Bangka, Salad Bangka, Babi TIM (khew nyuk). They also serve Bangka style Chinese food. So that day, we ordered a bowl of Lempah Ikan Nanas, Songsui, lakso (very different from Medanese laksa or Bogor style laksa, it was made of rice flour shaped like thick udon and served with coconut milk & fish broth sauce) and kodok goreng mentega. Overall I thought all the dish were superb, I love the spicyness of the fish soup. I also like the songsui very much. Meanwhile, SC & RJ said that the Kodok goreng mentega is the best that they had ever tasted so far. We surely will be back to tried their other specialties.

Cheese Cake Factory
Posted by jeny at 7:27 AM
After bubur ayam sukabumi, we went to the restaurant next door for dessert. The restaurant's interior is nice. There are display cases showcasing their cheese cakes and an open kitchen. Besides dessert, this place also offers full meal course (steak, pasta, pizza, etc), but we already decided we'll only try their desserts. So we ordered a piece of blueberry cheese cake and a portion of warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The cheese cake tasted delicious and wasn't too sweet. The warm chocolate cake was also decent, but I was dissapointed when they said they don't have mint leaves, which would've complimented the vanilla ice cream nicely. Overall, I think this place is good, but I still prefer Cizz's cheese cake, too bad they've already moved out of Tebet.

2 weeks ago, SC took me to try Bubur Ayam Sukabumi (Sukabumi's style porridge) at Tebet. There were several other joints that also serve bubur ayam Sukabumi, so we decided to tried the one located next to Cheese Cake Factory. Since we're planning to have dessert at the restaurant next door, we only ordered a portion of bubur ayam special complete with raw egg to share. In my opinion, it tasted delicious, the porridge was savory, maybe it was cooked in chicken broth, so I don't need to pour soy sauce anymore. The price was also reasonably cheap. :)

3 weeks ago, when we're in FX Center, we noticed that Cali Deli has just opened a new branch on the 7th floor. It is a restaurant specializing in Vietnamese sandwiches and I've been wanting to try it. However, we hesitated before entering this place because when we asked for non smoking area, the waiter told us proudly that every space in there is available for smoking. But since the place was not crowded and I didn't spot anyone smoking, we decided to take a quick bite. There were various sandwiches to choose from: java bread (sweet) 24.5K, veggie 21K, grilled chicken 32K, chicken satay 32K, lemongrass chicken sandwich 33K, BBQ chicken 33K, tuna egg 33K, beef satay 43K, turkey 43K and combo signature 43K. We decided to go with the Lemongrass chicken sandwiches. Too bad they didn't have lemongrass tea, so we decided only to order mineral water. Our meal came several minutes later. To be honest, it didn't look appealing at all. But it turned out to be delicious. I like the crispy French bagguete and the stuffing was also good. I like the taste of chicken combined with lemongrass and cilantro, It taste so refreshing. If only they put a strict rule about smoking & non smoking (or better yet, no smoking at all), I think I'll visit this place more often.

Last month, we visited a place called Glass House located at Pluit area. The place has a quite nice design & concept. The menu is a combination of Asian & Western dishes. Since we've already had lunch somewhere else, we didn't order much. We only ordered a portion of fish & chips and warm chocolate cake. The fish & chips was quite good, served with what they said is tar tar sauce. The fish was fresh & fried in the right crispiness. As for the chocolate cake, the portion was small, but the cake itself was not bad at all. It was warm, using dark chocolate I presume, with a right texture. A funny thing happened when we paid the bill. I usually keep restaurant's bill for review. But the waiter didn't give me back my receipt, and when I asked for it, it came back with a very crumpled paper. :))

Indian Tandoor

Last month I was craving for Indian Cuisine. At first we wanted to go to Haveli at Graha Irama, but a friend pointed out that it has recently closed. So our next choice is Queen of India at Hotel Danau Sunter. On our way to Sunter, we passed several Indian restaurant that looks quite promising, so we changed course and stopped at Indian Tandoor.

Indian Tandoor

The place was simple, but clean with several Indian accessories on the wall and the television was playing an Indian movie channel. It turned out that we're the only Indonesian patrons sitting there. To me, it is a sign of authentic food. So we ordered garlic naan 10.5K, butter naan 9.5K & Mix Vegetable Makhanwala (a combination of vegetables cooked in tomato gravy) 29K, plus a portion of chicken biryani rice 39.5K. The meal turned out in very generous portions, it tasted hot, tasty & spicy. Since I love Indian dishes, to me all of the dishes was very delicious. The service was very friendly, we surely will be back for more.

Ramen 38

Last month, when I was meeting SC around Sarinah for dinner, we stopped by Ramen 38 that serves authentic Japanese noodle. Ramen 38 at Wahid Hasyim is the smaller branch from the one located at Melawai street, in the 2nd floor of the same building that house Kamome Japanese Supermarket. We ordered the usual: Tonkotsu Ramen (pork bone broth soup ramen served with pork slices, wakame and topped with nori). In my opinion, the ramen at Melawai tasted better than this one. I think this ramen was too salty, but maybe that night was not my lucky night.

When I heard from several friends that Shabu Tei was giving 50% discount for their meal if paid with BCA credit card, I was so excited to try it. So I asked my friend if she wanted to break fasting there. She agree and we went to the Plaza Semanggi branch. We had a great time there but too bad I didn't bring my camera. Several weeks later, a couple of friends, SC and I went to Mall Taman Anggrek branch for dinner. The place was very crowded, there's a small queue in front of the restaurant, but luckily we didn't have to wait long to get a table.
Shabu Tei

We ordered agedashi tofu 19K, spicy salmon salad (fresh salmon with spicy mayonaise sauce) 16K, wagyu prime rib eye (large) 139K served with shitake mushrooms, enoki, spring onions, carrot, bean sprouts, Chinese cabbage, radish, tofu, udon and steam rice. plus an additional order mix seafood (large) 95K, tempura moriawase (fried ebi tempura & mixed vegetables) served with miso soup & steam rice 54K. Overall, the meals were delicious although their salmon salad portion was smaller than the one I had before. The service was a bit slow (maybe it's because the restaurant was full and they're low on staff as it was still in holiday season).

After lunch, SC and I went to Taman Anggrek Mall to meet some friends for dinner. Since we still have sometime to spare, we decided to try this Danish ice cream cafe. They offer a wide variety of choices of ice cream (banana fudge, belgian chocolate chip, cookies & cream, danish nougat, fruits of forest, macadamia nut, mango, mint chip, mocha almond fudge, orange chocolate chip, rum & raisin, strawberries & cream, vanilla & yogurt). We ordered one of Andersen's creation: Single Fondue (comes with fresh seasonal fruits, chocolate chips cookies, nuts, waffle cone, chocolate sauce and 2 scoops of rich and creamy ice cream, we choose Belgian chocolate chips & rum raisin) 40K. The ice cream tasted delicious, although not as creamy as Cream & Fudge or Cold Stone. I found myself scraping the serving plate for the last bit of ice cream :)

Last Month, we visited this Japanese restaurant located in the same area with Warung Ngalam for dinner. The restaurant is on the second floor. The interior was spacious, dimly lit, but still feels cozy & warm. The service was quite good, and the menu is extensive. That night, we ordered Chasoba 35K for SC and Oyako Jyu 31K for me. For dessert, we ordered Ogura ice cream 9K. In my opinion, both of the dishes tasted great. My Oyako Jyu was quite delicious although the portion was a bit too small for a girl with a very big stomach like me :P The cold soba also tasted delicious. It came with a bowl of soup and a raw bird egg to put inside the soup. I like the soup taste very much. After dinner, each of us were given a plate of complimentary fruit. I think we'll be back as soon as we have the chance since I'm dying to try their cute kids bento :)

Indah Seafood 21
Posted by jeny at 10:18 AM
Last month, we were in the Mangga Dua area and had the chance to dine at Indah Seafood. I have known this place for a long time as Seafood keramik because the setting & interior looks like a ceramic store (CMIIW). The place was quite crowded when we arrived. They serve the usual seafood restaurant fares: fish, crab, prawn, squid, oyster, mussel & several types of vegetables dishes. They also have nasi goreng seafood. Since it was just me & SC having dinner, we didn't order much. We ordered 2pcs Kepiting Telor Saus Tiram 104K (female crab in soy sauce, Padang/Medan/black pepper sauce are also available), kerang darah (poached blood mussels accompanied with chili pineapple dipping) 7K, kangkung cah polos (stir-fried morning glory) 9K with kelapa muda (coconut water) 6K. We didn't have to wait long for our meals to arrive. Overall it tasted good (finger lickin' good to be precise), The crabs were big and fresh, the sauce was OK though. I don't like soy sauce much, but that's the only sauce SC's delicate stomach could take. The chili sauce that came with the mussels was hot, their sambal mangga (mango sambal) was refreshing although SC thought it didn't suit the dishes. :)

Warung 'Ngalam'
Posted by jeny at 6:26 PM
Last month, we visited a place called Warung Ngalam (reversed from the word 'Malang', a city in East Java). Located in the parking lot of Midori Restaurant & Bersih Sehat Massage, this place turned out to be a new business from Bersih Sehat Group. The interior is created to resemble a warung, but it's much cleaner & cozier. They offer various types of East Java cuisine such as: sop iga 17K, rawon 15K, soto ayam 12K, soto sulung 16K, sop buntut 29K, iga goreng 26K, buntut goreng 30K, lontong cap go meh 14K, tahu telor 10K, tahu gunting 10K, cwie mie (10-14K), pecel 9K, rujak cingur 15K, etc. The rice is priced at 3K and we can take as much as we want. That night, we ordered their Rawon & Cwie Mie, both of them tasted above average. We went back a week later and ordered their tahu telor. It was just so so, taste more like tofu omelette than tahu telor. The service & price are very reasonable, so we'll be back to try their other menus.

Masakan Rumah Bu Endang

Last month, we had buka puasa with several friends at a place called Masakan Rumah Bu Endang that serves traditional homemade Javanese dishes. The place is an old house turned into restaurant. Decorated in white & green, air conditioned with no smoking signs placed everywhere :) it feels homy & cozy. The owner, Bu Endang, is a very friendly person. She always talked to the customers & even handing us the cutlery herself.

[Relocated] Coffee Tree
Posted by jeny at 10:18 AM
After eating so many Nasi Campur Bali, we decided to find a place to cool our stomach down. We went to the newly relocated Coffee Tree (previously located on Mall Artha Gading). The place are far more spacious than the old one, 2 storey town house, with the second floor dedicated for the smokers. We got a cozy sofa at the ground floor and ordered black coffee 20K, hot kahlua mocha 32K, ice kahlua mocha 35K, irish cream mocha 35K, ice tiramisu latte 39K, tiramisu 29K and ice cream vanilla 15K for dessert. The coffee tasted delicious plus a nice latte art on every cup, and I love their tiramisu, one of the best in town in my opinion. :)

Our next stop was the newest addition to Balinese Cuisine in Kelapa Gading Boulevard called Depot Murni (also originated from Surabaya). They serve nasi Babi Guling Gianyar (Istimewa 28K, Biasa 25K), Iga Bakar (Saus Murni 34K, Saus teriyaki 39K), Sam Sam Goreng 20K, Nasi Ayam Betutu (Komplit 22K - Biasa 20K), Nasi Ayam Tabanan 22K, Sate kelapa 20K, Sate Plecing 15K 5pcs, Sate Pusut 15K for 5pcs, They even had Rawon on their menu :) Since we're already quite full, we only ordered Nasi Babi Guling Gianyar, sate pusut & usus goreng to share. Overall the dishes taste & presentation were only so so, nothing different or special compared with what we already had before.

Kafe Betawi
Posted by jeny at 9:40 AM
Usually I don't really look for Betawi restaurants in malls as I always prefer the one sold by street vendors. But SC suggested that maybe we could try one of a chain of Betawi restaurants at Pacific Place. The place is decorated nicely with Betawi ornaments.

We ordered soto Betawi 25K with steamed rice 4K, asinan betawi 18K, and hot tea 4K. It tasted quite decent. They certainly used good & fresh inggredients, which is something you can't always expect from street food vendors. Still, it hasn't made me change my opinion that Betawi food tasted better on the street. We had a pretty good night, especially because later that night, SC treated me to an amazing scone of chocolate sorbet at Huize van Wely downstairs. :)

We had family dinner last month at Cuisine Cuisine, a Chinese restaurant on the second floor of Pluit Junction. Apparently this restaurant is under the same management with Red Saphire. I'm not the one ordering, so this is pretty much what I remembered what we had. We had steamed fish, fish maw soup, sapo tofu, assorted pork, stir fried po chai with egg, century egg & salted duck egg, steamed prawn, and another type of sapo I don't remember the name. Overall all the meal were delicious, good services, although the price was quite pricey.

Pondok Sekarbela

Two weeks ago, we went for a short trip to Cirebon with several friends, but before that we had lunch first at Pondok Sekarbela. The restaurant is serving traditional Lombok dishes such as Ayam Pelecing, ayam Seraten, Pelecing Kangkung, Beberuk etc.. From the menu we choose : Ayam Seraten (less spicy that ayam pelecing) 14K, Ayam Pelecing 14K, Ikan Nila Seraten 45K, Ikan Gurame Pelecing 45K, Sate Pusut, Pelecing Kangkung, Kime-kime daging sapi 14K, beberuk 8K. The restaurant was not so full at lunch time but we still have to wait for a while for our orders to come. Overall, the dishes all tasted spicy as SC complained about it throughout our lunch. Still, I didn't think it was spicy enough (maybe my senses have been ruined from eating too much chili). The satay was quite small and contained more coconut that meat. The price was quite pricey compared to the size, but it was worth a try if you love spicy food.

Pasta De Waraku
Posted by jeny at 10:54 PM
pasta de waraku

Last month, a restaurant chain opens its first restaurant at Grand Indonesia. The place is called "Pasta the Waraku", a franchise from Singapore, serving all kinds of pasta in Japanese style. When we arrived there on a friday night, there was already a small queue in front of the restaurant. So we took our number and waited for about fifteen minutes. The restaurant is located on a section of Grand Indonesia that is called the garden district, which is heavily decorated in Japanese style. However, the decorations felt weird and the section is dark with several spotlights punctuating the decorations. As for the restaurant itself, it isn't big, but cleverly arranged, with good lighting and mirrors blanketing the walls, making the restaurant seems much larger. The front display shows a very attractive real size menus, plus they separate the smoking and non smoking sections.

Ah Mei Cafe
Three weeks ago, we passed by this newly opened cafe at Puri Indah Mall called Ah Mei Cafe. I was quite excited when I read the sign roti prata & nasi biryani, so I urged SC to have lunch there. Ah Mei Cafe is a Singaporean style Kopi Tiam that serves toast, noodle, roti prata, nasi biryani, murtabak & teh tarik. It is a semi self-service restaurant that we have to queue & pay for the meal first & then the meal will be served on our table later. Since we've just had our late breakfast, we only ordered roti prata with curry, mutton biryani rice and teh tarik (for share). Overall the taste was not bad, but not as spectacular as they claimed. The portion was quite small for the price. I think this place is only suitable for light breakfast. :)

Chic's Cookies
Posted by jeny at 5:39 AM
Two months ago, Chica gave me a pack of her latest creation: cookies. These cookies are the chewy American type. When I arrived home, I quickly unpacked them and took a large bite. It tasted heavenly. :) I like it a lot, especially the peanut butter cookies. She actually includes the recipe in her multiply site, but since I couldn't bake at all, I prefer to order it from her. So I order three varieties: original, double chocolate & peanut butter. She asked me if I prefer smaller or bigger cookies. I said that I want the smaller ones so I can have more cookies :P Chica's cookies can also be found at Coquelicot dessert corner or made by order.

Coquelicot

Last month, we visited Coquelicot again for lunch and this time, they were open. The place is designed as a fancy French cafe, with fancy candelier, fancy table lamp and cozy chair. I like the design of this place. Even their menu is fancy too. :) While waiting for my friend to arrive, I feel quite hungry, so I start ordering their soupe a l'oignon au fromage (baked creamy caramelized onion soup served with baquete in cheese toppings) 40K. In my opinion the soup tasted very average. The onion was almost non-existent and the soup has the texture & taste of canned soup. I think it was not prepared from scratch.

Nasi Uduk Jembatan Baru
Posted by jeny at 7:20 AM
This is my favorite Nasi Uduk Betawi, located near Trans-Jakarta Bus Stop: Jembatan Baru. It's just a small cart (gerobak) that opens at around 5 PM. They serve a very authentic & tasty Betawi style coconut rice complete with its semur jengkol. The rice is very fragrant and perfectly compliment the host of avalaible side dishes & the obligatory peanut chilly sauce. The price is very very cheap as a pack of nasi uduk complete with all its inggredients only costs less than 10K. In my oppinion this one is the best I've tasted so far. :)

Red Sapphire

Two weeks ago we had dimsum at Red Sapphire, a new chinese restaurant located at a new place called Pluit Junction. It looks glamorous from outside and nice from the inside. The walls are plastered with red wallpapers and Chinese poems written on them. A few pieces of Chinese antique furniture are scattered about. The dimsum menu consists of about 30 items to choose from. We picked mini egg tart (3pcs) 10.8K, prawn dumpling 13.8K, Xiao Long Bao 12.8K, chicken feet 10.8K, beef cheong fan 13.8K, prawn cheong fan 15.8K, char siew cheong fan 13.8K, siew mai 13.8K, taro cake 12.8K, chasiu pie 12.8K, duck dumpling 12.8K, fried prawn dumpling 13.8K, fried durian dumpling 20K, pork ribs with taro 12.8K. with Chinese tea (ti kuan yin) 5K. Overall, the dishes tasted above average & the price was moderate, but the service was quite slow. We had to wait for some time for every order to come to our table, especially our last order: fried durian dumpling, which took more than 30 minutes. Hopefully if we have the chance to return in the future, they would have already improved their service.

Sate Khas Senayan Express
Posted by jeny at 9:05 AM
We had dinner with several friends at Sate Khas Senayan Express in Artha Gading Mall. I like the design that still uses traditional elements mixed with comtemporary lighting, making the restaurant looks fresh, while still retaining traditional style. The menu is simplified from Satay House Senayan with several additional rice menus. We ordered nasi pepes combo 41K, tongseng sate combo 60K, tahu telur sate combo 41K, sate ayam bumbu pedas combo 37K, nasi gudeg combo 29K, nasi begana combo 32K, es coklat kacang merah 15K, es campur 15K. The dishes' presentation was very nice. My nasi pepes tasted ok, although not as good as nasi pepes tante liana. My friend complained the her sate ayam blora was cold instead of hot. Other than these issues, the dishes were decent. Maybe next time we'll stick to their best dishes: satays and Tahu Telor. :)

Last month, we had dinner at Furama restaurant on Hayam Wuruk street. The place was very crowded, since there was a birthday party at that moment. Luckily, we managed to grab a spot as soon as we arrived. The menu was quite extensive. We ordered ayam garam crispy 46.7K, lapis kuping babi 28.8K, goreng jamur kulit tahu 28.8K, tim kaki ayam 8.8K, siew mai udang 11.8K, hakau udang 12.8K, udang goreng telur asin 58.8K, wong san cah fumak 43.8K, sapo terong furama 39.8K. Overall most of the dishes was only so so. Their dimsums were not fresh anymore, maybe they made it in the morning. I once read in Laksmi new Jakarta Good Food Guide that this place got the best udang telur asin in town, but it fell far short of the mark set by Liyen's signature dish. The sapo terong took ages to arrive. We had to ask several times and it finally came out after we have finished with our meals. :(

3 weeks ago, we tried this small & stylish cafe inside Glow Store at Plaza Indonesia. It was a branch of the old Kemang stalwart. Although the place is not big, the interior is decorated in classic contemporary style. They have several cakes displayed in the counter, but there's not much to select from the menu. We ordered Du Hammam Tea (green tea, rose, green date and red fruit) 25K++ and from their dessert list we ordered chocolate profiterole (filled with stracciatella ice cream and caramel sauce) 45K++. I like the profiterole very much, with the ice cream containing coarsely ground peanuts. The tea was also good. Pricey, but worth my every rupiahs :D

Simpang Tiga
Posted by jeny at 8:58 AM
Last month, we had a quick lunch at Simpang Tiga restaurant. It's a Padang restaurant that is very famous in North Sumatra. If you travel around North Sumatra by car, you'll find a lot of Simpang Tiga along the road that has become traveller stops and they serve decent Padangnese cuisine. However, I found this one to be quite contrary from my expectations. The interior of this restaurant is very glamorous and a bit tacky. The service is very friendly though. They didn't serve the dishes the way Padang restaurants usually do. We have to order what we want to eat. So we chose Gulai Otak 12K, Daun Ubi Tumbuk 8K, and Ikan Patin Asam Pedas 10K. SC was quite satisfied with the dishes since they weren't spicy at all. Their ikan patin asam pedas was quite delicious. But I'm disappointed because the dishes tasted too sweet for my preference. Maybe it was because they've adjusted the taste to suit Jakartan's taste. Since it was quite pricey, I think I won't be visiting this fancy Padang restaurant if I have other choices.

On our way home, we stopped by Bendungan Hillir area to buy some Lumpia Semarang from Bamboo ID. I've tasted this lumpia before, but didn't have time to take a picture, since it vanished quickly right after I put it in front of my colleagues. So this time, I decided to take a picture first before eating it. Since both of us feel very full, we only bought 5 pcs (30K) home. At first I thought I can only eat 1 or 2 pcs, but I ended up eating 3 pcs (SC got 2). It was simply delicious. There were no hint of the smell normally associated with bamboo shoots that usually makes me hesitant to eat Lumpia Semarang. We definitely will be back. Hopefully, they will open a cafe soon, so we can eat the lumpia on the spot instead of taking it home first. :)

Gourmet Garage
Posted by jeny at 6:22 PM
After our not so lucky experience at Dijan's, we decided to return to Gourmet Garage again. This time we're lucky as there were several empty spots in the small parking lot. Gourmet Garage is a combination of 3 restaurants: Jbay, Hiro, Sabaa & 1 supermarket in one roof. No wonder this place is always full. We chose to sit on the first floor at Jbay. After scanning the cake & ice cream selection, we ordered Hot Chocolate Melt Pudding 39K. The service was very nice compared to Dijan's, even though we only ordered 1 item (with no drink). About 15 minutes later our order came, a small chocolate cake accompanied by a waffle basket of vanilla ice cream + chocolate sauce. The taste was simply superb. The chocolate inside tasted like dark chocolate and it goes perfectly with the vanila ice cream & mint leaves.

Gourmet Garage

We went back several weeks later and this time, we ordered three scoops of ice cream (12K each): chocolate chip, tiramisu & banana pistachio, and also ordered their apple tart. All of it are delicious. The chocolate ice cream was bitter as dark chocolate should be and the apple tart had a nice cinnamon aroma. We will be back again for their other menus when we have time :P

Dijan
Posted by jeny at 6:17 PM
After lunch, we decided to have dessert at some other place. I've heard/read somewhere that Gourmet Garage's ice cream & chocolate cake is delicious. Since we're near Kemang area, we immediately headed there. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the parking lot was so full. So we went to Dijan instead for pannekoek & planned to return later if we're still hungry. Contrary to the situation at Gourmet Garage, Dijan was empty. We're the only customer there. I like the interior of this place, it was an old colonial house turned into a restaurant. We only ordered a potion of Pannekoek (small) 25K with mineral water, and then I saw that they also had a hot chocolate cake, so I ordered it. The waiter asked us twice as if he can't believe that we only wanted to order desserts.

Dijan's Pannekoek

Our pannekoek came first. It was only so so, not bad, but not good either. After finishing the pannekoek, we waited and waited and waited for our next dessert, but after more than half an hour, noth
