We had dinner with several friends at Sate Khas Senayan Express in Artha Gading Mall. I like the design that still uses traditional elements mixed with comtemporary lighting, making the restaurant looks fresh, while still retaining traditional style. The menu is simplified from Satay House Senayan with several additional rice menus. We ordered nasi pepes combo 41K, tongseng sate combo 60K, tahu telur sate combo 41K, sate ayam bumbu pedas combo 37K, nasi gudeg combo 29K, nasi begana combo 32K, es coklat kacang merah 15K, es campur 15K. The dishes' presentation was very nice. My nasi pepes tasted ok, although not as good as nasi pepes tante liana. My friend complained the her sate ayam blora was cold instead of hot. Other than these issues, the dishes were decent. Maybe next time we'll stick to their best dishes: satays and Tahu Telor. :)

3 weeks ago, we tried this small & stylish cafe inside Glow Store at Plaza Indonesia. It was a branch of the old Kemang stalwart. Although the place is not big, the interior is decorated in classic contemporary style. They have several cakes displayed in the counter, but there's not much to select from the menu. We ordered Du Hammam Tea (green tea, rose, green date and red fruit) 25K++ and from their dessert list we ordered chocolate profiterole (filled with stracciatella ice cream and caramel sauce) 45K++. I like the profiterole very much, with the ice cream containing coarsely ground peanuts. The tea was also good. Pricey, but worth my every rupiahs :D

After our not so lucky experience at Dijan's, we decided to return to Gourmet Garage again. This time we're lucky as there were several empty spots in the small parking lot. Gourmet Garage is a combination of 3 restaurants: Jbay, Hiro, Sabaa & 1 supermarket in one roof. No wonder this place is always full. We chose to sit on the first floor at Jbay. After scanning the cake & ice cream selection, we ordered Hot Chocolate Melt Pudding 39K. The service was very nice compared to Dijan's, even though we only ordered 1 item (with no drink). About 15 minutes later our order came, a small chocolate cake accompanied by a waffle basket of vanilla ice cream + chocolate sauce. The taste was simply superb. The chocolate inside tasted like dark chocolate and it goes perfectly with the vanila ice cream & mint leaves.

Gourmet Garage

We went back several weeks later and this time, we ordered three scoops of ice cream (12K each): chocolate chip, tiramisu & banana pistachio, and also ordered their apple tart. All of it are delicious. The chocolate ice cream was bitter as dark chocolate should be and the apple tart had a nice cinnamon aroma. We will be back again for their other menus when we have time :P

After lunch, we decided to have dessert at some other place. I've heard/read somewhere that Gourmet Garage's ice cream & chocolate cake is delicious. Since we're near Kemang area, we immediately headed there. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the parking lot was so full. So we went to Dijan instead for pannekoek & planned to return later if we're still hungry. Contrary to the situation at Gourmet Garage, Dijan was empty. We're the only customer there. I like the interior of this place, it was an old colonial house turned into a restaurant. We only ordered a potion of Pannekoek (small) 25K with mineral water, and then I saw that they also had a hot chocolate cake, so I ordered it. The waiter asked us twice as if he can't believe that we only wanted to order desserts.

Dijan's Pannekoek

Our pannekoek came first. It was only so so, not bad, but not good either. After finishing the pannekoek, we waited and waited and waited for our next dessert, but after more than half an hour, nothing came out from the kitchen. Then I asked them & they said that we didn't make it clear that we wanted chocolate cake too, so they didn't prepare it. I was quite annoyed, so we quickly paid and left. Definitely not going to return. :(

Boka Buka

Last month, we want to have something fancy for lunch and decided to try out French dishes. So we head out to Coquelicot on Puri Mutiara Raya. Unfortunately, it was closed for a private party. So we turned to another restaurant on Cipete Raya: Boka Buka. The place is not big or glamorous, but it has a nice & cozy atmosphere, with friendly service.

Last month, After working hour, I'm meeting SC at Mall Ambassador for dinner. The place we chose to have dinner this time is a small place called Wan Toe located at the left corner of the mall. I arrived early and the room was half full. I asked for a table for two in non-smoking section. To my surprise, I was ushered to the very back of the restaurant, where's there's only 2-3 table available and with the aircon blowing to the back my head. I was very uncomfortable with this situation & later asked to move to the corner of the smoking section.
Wan Toe
The menu is mostly Asian selection, so I ordered Udang Telor Asin (fried prawn in salted egg sauce) and lindung goreng (deep fried eel) to eat with 2 bowl of rice, plus a plate of durian goreng for dessert. I always looked for udang telor asin first whenever I entered a new restaurant. The udang telor asin was different from the one from Li Yen as they put fried curry leaves on top of the dish, giving it an aromatic smell, but I still prefer Li Yen's over this one. Their lindung goreng was only OK and a bit on the sweet side. Their dessert was quite oily with average taste. In short, there's nothing here that makes us want to return. OK, maybe for the Udang Telor Asin, but only for take away order.

Expensive is the first thing that comes to my mind whenever anyone mentions Puro / Blowfish. One day, while we're at City Plaza, we saw that there's a discount lunch promo for pizza / pasta, so we decided to try it. The place is not as spacious as i thought, dominated with white color and an open kitchen. While Blowfish offers Japanese cuisine, Puro is for Italian cuisine. I heard that this place serves authentic Italian cuisine (which mean they didn't adjust it to Indonesian local taste like some pizza joint do, so if you're looking for pizza rasa rendang, you've came to the wrong place). the menu consists of antipasti (appetizers), la pasta, secondi piatti di pesce (seafood main courses), secondi de carne (meat main courses), gourmet pizza, dolci (dessert), le nostre zuppe (soups) & I risotti (rice dishes).

3 weeks ago after attending a batik exhibition held at Jakarta Convention Center, we planned to have lunch at Warung Tengil - Kelapa Gading. But due to my sore throat, SC decided to postpone it and we went to Lang Viet instead. From what we've heard, the place serves quite authentic Vietnamese dishes. So we ordered pho bo (large) 44K to share, fresh goi cuon 25K and lemon grass tea 20K. In my opinion, this is one of the best pho I have ever tasted, but I'm not sure about the goi cuon as the rice paper that wrapped the goi cuon was a bit sticky, though the dish still tasted OK. Their hot lemon grass tea was so delicious, while the cold lemon grass tea was a bit tasteless. We will be back here again to try their other specialties. Btw there's a sing sing ramen in this complex too :)

After late lunch at Sari Melayu we still have some time to kill before picking SC's sister from the airport, so we headed to Casa - Kemang determined to try only the dessert. Located on the second floor of Aksara Book Store. I like the decor of this place, it was so sixties. The place was still empty so we can have our meal without having people smoking next to our table.

Last week I tried to visit Lapo on Jobunta (again) but they not open (are they close for good?), so we turn around and visited Sari Melayu instead. They served Medanese Melayu Cuisine, The place was quite deserted since it already passed the lunch time, we picked several type of meal from the counter : chicken curry 10.5K, Gule Otak 9.5K, tumis daun pakis 7.5K, didn't tried their famous gulai kepala ikan (we're afraid we coudn't finish it). In my Opinion the meal have a similarity with Padang Cuisine, this one was more tame. their tumis pakis was delicious, the green chili sambal wasn't hot at all, but still the taste was above average. :)

Two weeks ago, we visited Spaghetti House at the Pacific Place Mall. I used to love their lasagna deluxe that I've once ate years ago and it has been so long since I last tried it. So this time, I ordered their lasagna deluxe 42K with mushroom soup 15K. I don't know whether I put too much expectation on the meal or I was just being nyinyir, but I was quite dissapointed when the meal came and it was not as good as I rememberred it. The mushroom soup tasted more like instant soup, while their lasagna was not good either. It was gooey, not as creamy as I remembered and I think the chicken they used was not fresh because it tasted weird. I noticed that the price was still similar to a few years ago, so maybe they reduced the food quality to maintain that price. :(

Several weeks ago, We passed through this newly opened restaurant located across the famous Sandwich Bakar on Pesanggrahan street. This place apparently is a branch from the famous Bebek H.T Karang IV, actually I already heard that they opened their Jakarta branch on Karang Tengah street - Lebak Bulus, but never had time to try it. So we ordered 2 bebek goreng super (about 15K if I'm not mistaken) with Cah Kangkung 5K and steamed rice 3K & nasi uduk 5K (AYCE). From the drink list they have fruit juice selection only jeruk/alpukat/semangka/melon/jambu/sirsak/tomat/wortel at 3K while their ice tea range from 0.5K - 2K (refill). we have to waited for about 15-30 minutes and asked for our food for several times (maybe because this place is still new), and our meal turn out in about 1/2 dozen of pieces, it seems like they run out of bebek super (bigger size duck) and replaced it with almost the whole portion of the duck. In my opinion the begor taste simply delicious, a bit oily but I don't care, the duck was so fat, the meat was so juicy plus their oily chili sauce it was simply perfect. oh btw while we are paying we're given a free parking card. :)

We went to the recently opened 'Q Smoke House Factory' for dinner last week, no its not a smoking room, but their specialty is "wood fire barbeque". The restaurant was decorated in wood, open ceiling with a dimly light that creating a warm & cozy place. Their concept is providing the authentic barbeque experience, the ribs was marinated and cook for minimum 8 hours in custom built barbeque pit imported from USA, using a mix of fruit and hardwood (pake kayu nangka bukan? kerja sama dgn departemen kehutanan ya?). And since It was the soft opening, they offer 30% pre opening discount for all the menu listed.

We tried this new 'fastfood' pizza on one weekend several weeks ago, located next to beautika on Hanglekir road. in weeks day, I guess this place is full of Mustopo & Binus student :P They offered thin crust pizza (one size : 25cm) and serve several types of finger food such as : french fries, chicken wings, chicken tenders, mozzarella cheese sticks, garlic cheese pizza bread. They also have rootberry float, milk shakes, several types of cookies & brownies. So We ordered : "pepperoni pizza" (Fast Eddies's pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, & 20 slices of beef pepperoni, I did count the beef :P ) 35,455K, "garlic cheese pizza bread" (fresh pizza dough covered with butter, olive oil & fresh garlic, sprinkled with mozzarella and parmesan cheese, baked soft yet crispy, and served with fast eddie's pizza sauce) 13,636K. The pizza as not bad but the dough taste like biscuit (terlalu garing & gosong), the mozarella stick taste like gorengan & on contrary the dipping sauce (fast eddie's pizza sauce) looks like they came straight from the chiller. not bad though but I still prefer olio or marzano over this place :P

spizza
Last week we have dinner at a small yet cozy pizza house called Spizza located at Kemang. Apparently it is pizza franchise from Singapore, but since they use a traditional pizza oven, I think this one worth a try. The list of menu was quite impressive, consist of appetizer (10 items named after the emperor of rome), soup, pasta (9 dish name after cities of italy), pizza (26 choices named after Italian woman) and maincourse (6 choices name after the regions) and dessert (7 choices named after the famous female opera character). After studied the menu for a while we start to order : for appetizer we choose : "Lucullo" (oven baked portobello mushroom filled with beef breakfast ham and mozzarella cheese) 33K, from the pizza list we picked : "Laura" (mozzarella, tallegio, fontina, gorgonzola, parsley) Medium 53K, and for dessert we have "venere" (melted chocolate cake with classic vanilla ice cream) 28K. Because we spent more than 100K we can choose 1 more meal (pasta/pizza) for free, so we picked "capri" (traditional beef lasagna) 43K. Overall the meal was delicious and quite affordable, not as delicious as marzano, but 1 level above izzy pizza, so if you like thin crust pizza, this one is definitely a must try :)

This place was one of my favorite place in town whenever I want good food, good service, spectacular view in an affordable price. I used to visit this place in 2003/4 with friends (well actually I dragged them there for dimsum, lunch or dinner :P ). their "tahu nenek moyang" (75K) was so delicious but that that was was a bit pricey. 2 weeks ago when we went there for dimsum (they offer 30% discount on food & beverages from 4-17 Dec) and ended up ordered all sort of dimsum & dessert. :)

We ordered xiao long bao 24K and a bowl of La Mian Cha Chiang 32K and a pot of Chinese tea. If the lamian was nothing special, the xiao long bao was really delicious. I guess We'll be back next time only to try their xiao long bao again.

Last week we got an invitation for birthday dinner held at "Ajengan restaurant". located near melawai / blok M. From the moment we entered this place, I just love it. I like the inner garden in Balinese style, the entrance, foyer & the ambience of this place, so homy & cozy. They served an authentic Balinese Cuisine, and I bet the food will be as good as the place. :)

I have lunch at Pizza Marzano at Senayan City with SC last weekend before we headed to Jakarta Book fair. Since SC was craved of cheese, we ended up ordering all kind of cheese like : "Fresh Baked Goat Cheese" and "Quattro Formaggi pizza" (4 types of cheese in 1 pan). and I have to admit they served damned delicious food. usually if I crave for thin crust Italian Pizza, I will go to Izzi Pizza, but after this I'll always went here. Bon Appetite :)

Nasi Campur Bali

I had "Nasi Campur Bali"/ Balinese mixed rice (steamed rice served with mixture of lawar nangka, tum babi, pork satay, etc) 10K at Pure Cinere courtyard last weekend, I also bought "nasi Jenggo" ( steamed rice served with noodles, fried nuts, shredded shicken and sambal, wrapped in banana leaf). In my oppinion the food was quite authentic, to bad they don't serve "Babi Guling" (a spit-roasted whole pig stuffed with a delicious mix of herbs and spices) when we came. :P

Cilantro Tea House

Last weekend was a long long weekend (thx to harpitnas), My friend told me that she saw an advert in newspaper that Cilantro PIM2 have a AYCE (all you can eat) Dimsum for only 29K++, so we decided to give it a try.

I never been to Cilantro PIM2 before, and to me the place was less cozy than the one in wisma BNI 46. Quite confusing with the decoration with lots of manga painting on the wall & menus, there's 2 menus : one for list of dimsum selection, and one book labeled "peaches tea house".

One of my favorite restaurant in Jakarta, served very hot and spicy Manado cuisine. Last week, I had a chance to have lunch there, when we arrived there, the place already packed with alot of people. We ordered cumi woku, ayam dibulu, ayam rica-rica, ikan bakar with sambal dabu dabu, tumis bunga pepaya, a bowl of sop kakap asam and ended it with a delicious "klapertart" (coconut tart desert)

I always love to have duck for my meal as an alternative for chicken. Among my favorite there were "bihun bebek binjai" - pasar muara karang , peking duck - the duck king, Bebek Goreng Suryo. A couple of week ago with some friends I tried this one, located in kakilima, the banner outside said : "Joko Putro : Nasi Uduk, Bebek Goreng, Ayam Goreng, Pecel Ayam/Lele ..." so we ordered "Bebek Goreng" with a plate of "Nasi uduk". the service was quite fast & clean. the taste not bad, the meal came with lalapan & sambal terasi dadakan. Compared to other "bebek Goreng" from its class, but I think I like "Begor Suryo" better than this one.

The begor was delicious, served with 2 types of sambal & 1 special sauce for Begor. Usually I prefer duck cooked in chinese style, but this one was an exception. I guess the duck was marinated in special sauce before frying it. and the result is the meat was tender & juicy inside but crispy out side. Very recommended deh :)

Last week we visited "Sate Khas Senayan" located at Jl. Pakubuwono VI. Sate House Senayan served quite authentic Indonesian cuisine or maybe Javanese cuisine, the restaurant was separated between smoking & non smoking area, warm ambiance .. I think this kind of restaurant was suitable for friends/family gathering.

I had dinner with some of my colleagues galls last Sunday night at Payon Restaurant. I've never been to Payon before. I like the interior, decorated like Indonesian traditional house, with wooden table & desk, open air, very romantic atmosphere *banyak nyamuk juga*. They served Indonesian traditional cuisine : actually I think its Javanese Cuisine, quite pricey but I think its worthed. They got several store at the right side of the restaurant, the one that most impressed me was the one decorated in warung style selling some snack / food from my childhood that already hard to find nowadays.

Last night we had dinner at Mangkok Putih located at Setiabudi Building. The restaurant was decorated in the usual cafe decoration with a touch of red accent. I don't really like the place setting, I think it's a little bit too crowded, no separation between smoking and no smoking area. :(

After seated we ordered 2 Duck Noodle(27K), Tempura Udon(35K), MP Fried Seafood Kweteow (26K), MP Fruit Cocktail (10K), Lime Squash(12.5K), Lime Juice(12.5K) and Guava Juice(12.5). One of the house speciality that we ordered last night was "Duck Noodle", I agree that the duck was delicious, but the rest of our order didn't taste very special. mmm I ate at Mangkok Putih @ Cilandak Town Square once, and I think their food quality is better than this one.

Bakoel KoffieTired of hangout at Starbuck / Coffee Bean, Last weekend with a couple of friends we headed to "Bakoel Koffie" Cikini. From what I heard Bakoel Koffie serves a various coffee provided by good quality beans taken from Indonesia’s plantations in Sumatra, Sulawesi, Timor, Java and Bali.

I'm not a big fan of coffee so I can't tell much about the coffee quality here, but I guess it was OK lah, not bad judging from all the seat in this place mostly occupied :P The place was decorated in a warm nostalgic atmosphere, being inside the cafe just like seeing old movies, here and there alot off people chatting. and since I can't stand smoke we choose to sit at the non smoking section. I accidentally meeting Feby there, and had quite a good time there drinking Coffee Mocca.

Today we had lunch at newly open Ta Wan Restaurant in Setiabudi Building. "Ta" in chinese means Big, and "Wan" means Bowl. This chinese style restaurant specialised in porridge, was always pack with people during lunch time and dinner time. It have several restaurant in several mall in Jakarta.

Although Ta Wan called it self "the Porridge Place", but the "black pepper beef" here was very delicious. Today we ordered a set menu for 8 which included : Black Pepper Beef, Ta Wan Special Crispy Fried Chicken, Lie Hong Kian Shrimp Egg Roll, Fried Shrimp with Sesame Seed, Baronang with Tauco Sauce, Hot Plate Seafood, and my fav Scallop Brocolli in Oyster Sauce. Overall its very recommended, Good food combined with good service, and very reasonable price too. Bon Apetit :)
