We had dinner with several friends at Sate Khas Senayan Express in Artha Gading Mall. I like the design that still uses traditional elements mixed with comtemporary lighting, making the restaurant looks fresh, while still retaining traditional style. The menu is simplified from Satay House Senayan with several additional rice menus. We ordered nasi pepes combo 41K, tongseng sate combo 60K, tahu telur sate combo 41K, sate ayam bumbu pedas combo 37K, nasi gudeg combo 29K, nasi begana combo 32K, es coklat kacang merah 15K, es campur 15K. The dishes' presentation was very nice. My nasi pepes tasted ok, although not as good as nasi pepes tante liana. My friend complained the her sate ayam blora was cold instead of hot. Other than these issues, the dishes were decent. Maybe next time we'll stick to their best dishes: satays and Tahu Telor. :)

It has been so long since we last visited Soto Rendi, which, in my opinion, is the best soto madura I've ever tasted in Jakarta. We returned last week to savor the soto once again. From what we heard, Soto Rendi has expanded and opened a second (bigger) branch near Kampus Anggrek Binus. We tried to look for it but couldn't find it. So we decided to visit the old one instead. Located in Kompleks Sandang, the place is very very cramped. We were lucky to find two empty seats inside. We ordered the usual bowl of Soto Ayam Nasi Campur (rice topped with all the soto inggredients & drenched in chicken broth) at 8K per bowl, a very reasonable price, although it has increased since our last visit almost two years ago. The ingredients were not as generous as I remembered, but the taste is still every bit as good as the last time, especially when you add a dash of lemon & some sambal. Soto Rendi was even reviewed by Laksmi Pamuntjak in her newest edition of Jakarta Good Food Guide.

Last month I bought a new book by Laksmi Pamuntjak called Jakarta Good Food Guide 2008-2009, it consist of about 400 eateries from all over the place in Jakarta. One of the place recommended by this book was this sapo restaurant called Kamseng, served all kind of congee 24 hours. The congee selection include : beef, all kind of pork offal, squid, fish, chicken, Guangzhou - Beijing - Shanghai - Taiwan Special, saklon, seafood, prawn, meatball, eel, 3 flavor, crab and plain. Since we're still a bit full from nasi goreng, we only ordered the eel congee 24K with telur phitan 5.5K. The meal came in a hot sapo pot, the congee was very tasty but the texture was too fine. Usually I didn't like this kind of congee but this one can makes me scrape the bottom of the bowl. later I found out that we can choose a coarse type of congee. With this price plus it was much2 more delicious than the famous congee next door, we surely will be back. :)

This place is one of SC's favorite place. Located at Taman Palem Lestari - West Jakarta, served Jambinese noodle. they served 2 types of noodle : tamie kecil and tamie lebar in various size (regular, regular with double topping, big, big with double topping & with soup), they also served kwetiau & bihun. We usually only ordered the regular portion (11K) plus one bowl of pangsit ikan (15K), the noodle came with a bowl of broth soup (fish & meat). What make this noodle special is we can add several condiment to the noodle and soup to enhanced the taste. I usually mixed it with a little black vinegar, fish sauce, chilli sauce, and chilli slices. and it tasted so delicious, but some times too much chilli makes my stomach hot all day long. :p

2 weeks ago we had a family dimsum brunch at this new restaurant called May Star located a Le Grandeur Hotel (ex Dusit Hotel). I don't really like the interior (imho the romantic & flowery decoration just don't match with Chinese cuisine), plus it was so cold there. The restaurant have a vast selection of dim sum, and they offered a portion of roast duck for only 1K if our bill reach 500K. Overall the meal was good, I especially like their "chrisanthium pudding" and "Chinese snake soup" but not their "almond pudding". Overall we spent about 75K per person and it already include the roast duck. :)

After reading about this place from RestoDB and Appetite Journey, I urged SC to have dinner here. Located not far from Papa Mama Pastries. This place claims to serve Manhattan cuisine in Japanese style. We entered and asked for a non smoking section, but apparently the non smoking section is already full, so we have to sit in the smoking section. The service was quite good and fast, we ordered one of their specialty: Popeye's Favourite Chicken Roll (Spinach rolled with mozarella, breaded chicken and served with balsamic black pepper sauce) 36.5K, Cream of Mushroom Soup 16.5K, ice lemon mint tea 16.5K, and Malaysian Teh Tarik 16.5K. Overall I'm quite impressed with this place, our meal was delicious (both the mushroom soup & popeye's chicken roll) and the teh tarik was also delicious although it tasted more like chai. The presentation was attractive, but I'm not sure about their steak selection (it reminds me too much of abuba's steak). I suppose if they dared to call themselves 101 rolls, everything should be served rolled :)

Last month, SC and I try this 'hip' restaurant called Rasane at Taman Palem (also available at pessanggrahan), we already heard about this place for quite some times, but the high price made us hesitate to try it. Since its just the two of us, we only ordered 3 ounce kepiting asap telur 34.5K, kangkung lombok 19.5K, kerang darah rebus 15K, udang pancet telor asin 35K, steamed rice 4K, and es teh tawar 5K. The crab came in wrapped in banana leaf, it taste OK but not what I had in mind when I was thinking of smoked crab :) We do love their kangkung lombok and Udang pancet telor asin. I think we will be back to this place some other times to try their other specialties.

Last Friday, we're planning to have dimsum with some friends at Ah Yat, but when we arrive at the Golden Boutique Hotel around lunch time, it was filled with people, and the waiter outside the restaurant informed us that the Dimsum menus were already sold out. We decided to go to ITC Mangga Dua and have our lunch there instead. Since it was 2 days before Eid-ul Fitri, some of the eateries there were closed. Fortunately, we found a place called Bihun Bebek Beijing that was still open. We got a table and started to eat everything put in front of us as we were very hungry. There were bakso ikan & talas goreng, 4 packs of tape singkong @3K, 6 portions of bihun bebek @26K, 2 portions of nasi kari, 1 roti cane + kari kambing 20K, 2 portions of rujak @15K, 10 glasses of liang teh. Overall, the meal was delicious, but we were quite shocked when we paid as it was quite pricey. I don't know whether this was because the coming Eid-ul Fitri made the raw materials expensive or because this place does have a higher price tags.

Several months ago, on our way home, we stopped by a place located at Jl. Panjang called "Kafe Star" for dinner. The place look quite spartan but clean compared to the cafe2 tempat nongkrong we always found in the mall. They served a various selection of Javanese cuisine such as : rawon dengkul, rawon daging, garang asem ayam, timlo solo, tahu pong, tahu telur, racikan selat, garang asem, lontong opor, nasi opor, nasi langi, nasi bakmoy, nasi bakpuy, nasi lodeh empal, nasi pecel tumpang, pecel tumpang, nasi pecel, pecel telur, gado-gado, tahu acar, sosis kecap, rambak petis, and unique drink list such as : es lengkeng sarang burung, es dawet, es beras kencur, es asem off course they also got a normal drink list like es jeruk & friends. on weekend they also served : nasi liwet, bistik lidah sapi, botok teri, gadon daging sapi.

kafe star

On the table there was a plate of traditional snacks like : sosis solo, and several kue basah/jajan pasar. we ordered : nasi bakmoy & nasi lodeh empal, 2 types of Lumpia Semarang and I ordered es beras kencur turned out I can't stand the Jamuish taste, so I swapped mine with SC's hot tea . The bakmoy and lodeh tasted good, but I don't really like the Lumpia Semarang's taste. it had a very strong 'bamboo shoot smell'. I had lumpia semarang before, but I don't remember that it has such a trong smell. What do you think?

Visited this restaurant for dinner several weeks ago, This place was an Old Chinese Restaurant located at Kota served authentic Chinese Cuisine especially Hakka Cuisine. Their 'Udang telor Asin' is one of my all time favorite dishes, but since it was too expensive, this time we didn't order that. We order one of Liyen's signature dishes besides 'udang telor asin' is 'Ayam Garam' (salted chicken), 'Babi Hong' (kiu nyuk), sapo seafood, fish soup and noodles. Overall the meal was good, Their 'ayam garam' was so delicious, their 'babi hong' was delicious but still not as good as the one from Angke Restaurant, and if you didn't order 'udang telor asin', you'll be surprised to find that this place was indeed quite affordable :)

Several weeks ago, We passed through this newly opened restaurant located across the famous Sandwich Bakar on Pesanggrahan street. This place apparently is a branch from the famous Bebek H.T Karang IV, actually I already heard that they opened their Jakarta branch on Karang Tengah street - Lebak Bulus, but never had time to try it. So we ordered 2 bebek goreng super (about 15K if I'm not mistaken) with Cah Kangkung 5K and steamed rice 3K & nasi uduk 5K (AYCE). From the drink list they have fruit juice selection only jeruk/alpukat/semangka/melon/jambu/sirsak/tomat/wortel at 3K while their ice tea range from 0.5K - 2K (refill). we have to waited for about 15-30 minutes and asked for our food for several times (maybe because this place is still new), and our meal turn out in about 1/2 dozen of pieces, it seems like they run out of bebek super (bigger size duck) and replaced it with almost the whole portion of the duck. In my opinion the begor taste simply delicious, a bit oily but I don't care, the duck was so fat, the meat was so juicy plus their oily chili sauce it was simply perfect. oh btw while we are paying we're given a free parking card. :)

Last week SC was craving for "bubur ayam ala abang-abang", so I took him to one of my favorite "bubur ayam kaki lima" called "bubur ayam bang tatang". This is a very famous Indonesian style chicken porridge, opened every afternoon, the place it self was not very representative but it always full of customer gathered around Bang Tatang waiting for him to serve the meal (he can make more than 10 bowl of porridge in one batch). The specialty of this porridge is in its topping, it was full of a very generous chicken slices, I think the chicken is much more that the porridge :)

Last Sunday, one day before "nyepi" (Hindu new year), SC & I were hunting for Balinese food around West Jakarta. We once heard that there's a Pura located at Jelambar, In my mind whenever there's a Pura, there must be a Balinese food served :P We found this very humble "warung" next to the "pura" called "Putu Puja" owned by Mrs. Gusti Putu Puja that open only every sunday morning from 9AM. The only menu available there is "nasi campus khas Bali" 15K. In my opinion this is the most delicious Balinese "Nasi Campur" I had ever tasted in Jakarta. :)

Last week I was meeting SC at Mall Taman Anggrek, he took me to this new restaurant located beside 'Tawan'. Decorated in a warm ambience and red couch, it was quite nice and the menu was quite interesting. from the menu looks like their specialty is crab bihon (around 90K) - it was to expensive for us so we decided to order some thing else. So we ordered "minced pork cheese baked rice" 25.5K, "fish hor fun" 24.5K, Teh "0" without sugar 5.5K, and mineral water 8.5K (I noticed the drink is quite expensive). In my opinion the taste of the food is just so so.. the minced pork cheese baked rice tasted weird, I don't really get the idea of mixing Chinese style sweet minced pork with cheese, and the horfun was a bit oily. after the meal we still feel thirsty so we decided to order the "red bean snow ice" 18.5K :)

Several weeks ago, we had late lunch at NanXiang restaurant located at the top floor of Mall Taman Anggrek. Since I was so hungry, we didn't order their specialty (xiao long bao), but ordered 1 portion of "Mapo Tofu" 38K and 1 portion of "fried prawn in salted egg yolk" 45K with several bowl of rice. In my opinion the dish was not bad at all, the mapo tofu, although not as spicy as I thought, is still acceptable lah, and the fried prawn was delicious and it came in a very reasonable price. I think this place's price is cheaper than nanxiang at lagoon tower or Senayan City.

2 weeks ago, SC took me to this place called "Istana Raja Cobra". Yes, its a restaurant that served "Fear Factor" food. from their menu there were : snake, "biawak", "Bulus", Monkey, "kalong", rabbit & "bulus" cooked into : abon, deep fried, satay and soup. the snake came from various type : kobra hitam, piton/sanca, Belang, Lanang Sapi, Kali Mangsa, hijau Lowo, Tanah. I didn't dare to ate some of the item mentioned in the menu, so we only ordered : "Cobra Soup" 12.5K and "Piton Goreng" 17.5K. Overall the meal was not bad but not too good either. The soup taste exactly like "soto bening", only the meat was different (taste like chicken but have more fibre and a lot of bones like fish). btw they didn't served tea/coffee for drink since its advised not to have coffee/tea after drink "empedu ular". :)

I don't know if this place has the same owner as the one at ITC Mangga Dua or not, but it surely taste delicious, the soup just taste right, enough spicy and sour with extra chili and cilantro. and they also served "Badak" (sarsaparilla soft drink that came from Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra) 5K :)

Last Weekend, we decided to stopped by this place for supper :P from the name you could guess that this place specialty was Bakmi Kepiting, so we ordered 2 portion Bakmi Kepiting and 1 Nasi Goreng Kepiting. Surprisingly the noodle & nasi goreng was so delicious. The crab was generous. Especially my fried rice, the fried rice it self tasted so delicious, and I can't help thinking that this was too good to be Halal. and after we questioned the owner, my guess was right. It was not Halal.

Roti Canai

I tried "Roti Canai" again last weekend, this time I went to "Penang Restaurant" located at Tanjung Duren Road. and I insisted to order "roti canai with chicken curry" 16.5K again to compare it with the one I had at "Penang Place", the Curry turned out much more spicy than "penang place", and the roti is more firm & oily but still don't resembled what I ate at KL. I think I'll continue to search for "roti canai" whenever I went to Malaysian restaurant.

Last week, after visiting some friends at the hospital, we decided to have dinner at Pesanggrahan. Since its already late, I only want something light for dinner, so we didn't looking for some fancy looking restaurant and just look for street food instead. We stopped by a small warung called "Rumah Makan Nasi Gandul, masakan khas Pati Jateng". my first experience with "Nasi Gandul" was at "spice garden" Sogo foodcourt which was quite expensive & tasted so so. So we ordered 1 portion of "Nasi Gandul Campur" & 1 portion of "Nasi Ayam khas Semarang". On the table there's a display of various "jerohan", perkedel, bakwan jagung, tahu, tempe, tempe bacem etc to choose to accompanied our meal. Overall our ordered tonight taste much much more delicious than the one we had at Spice Garden & very reasonable price too. We will be back there soon to try another menu like : "Nasi Pindang", "Tahu Telor", "Soto Ayam Kemiri", Mangut etc.. (nyam nyam bgt deh pokoknya) :)

2 weeks ago we had dinner with some friends at "ChatterBox Cafe". Its been a long2 time ago since I last visited this place (maharani bo!). But this time they have "dailycious" program which gave 20% off for BII card holder, so we decided to gave it a try.

When I was here before I usually choose their Hainanese Chicken Rice, but this time I saw there's alot of new menu including some pasta selection, sandwich & Indian fried rice. so we ordered : "seafood with green noodle and cheese sauce" (served with prawn, dory fish and spinach noodle) 54.5K, "seafood clay pot" (served with rice) 46.5K, "kung po chicken" (served with rice and vegetable) 38K, "hainanese chicken rice" 34K, "chicken, prawn or fish curry" (served with rice, potato and curry sauce) 43K, "szechuan tau foo" (served with rice and vegetable) 30K, "es kacang" (shaved ice on red beans, jelly sweet corn and palm seeds flavored with rose syrup and durian ice cream) 19.5K & bottom less ice tea (free flow) 19K.

Overall the taste was not bad, better than I remembered. Good service & the price *sigh* yah OK lah but still a little bit "mahal" lah.. and I didn't like the interior, its like sitting in a glass cage :P

Last weekend, before going to "ya-udah" bistro, SC & I were heading to Pluit to try "Bihun Kari Ayam" Tabona. I had tasted its original "bihun kari ayam" in Medan a couple of months ago. When we heard that there's is a restaurant called Tabona in Pluit, we decided to give it a try.

So we ordered "Bihun Kari Ayam" 21K with a glass of "sirop terong belanda" 11K, the taste was actually not bad, but SC reckons that the price was not worth it and he prefer Bihun Kari Ayam we had at RM Kosasih - pasar muara karang. I already visited this restaurant several times since they got a very interesting promo : "Hongkong Dimsum for only 4.9K/item". the varieties of the dimsum was not very much. its divided between steam dumpling and fried dumpling. I especially like the steamed dumpling. the fried ones tasted to oily in my mouth. Since we are still in diet and "ngirit" mode, we ordered steamboat with ikan kakap 1/2 portion 8K , hati ayam 1/2 portion 6K, baso ikan 1/2 portion 8K, kerang kipas import 1/2 portion 12K, with vegetables.. they use chicken broth as soup base, there's a servant help us preparing the food, so we only sit and watch her preparing the meal. after cooked the meat in the hotpot for a while, she place it in the place filled with minyak wijen. and we ate it with a bowl of rice 3.5K, soy & chili sauce and acar 1.5K. the taste was really delicious, not bad... this place got a 3G from me : Good food, Good service, and Good price.. thx ya Lol... :)

Last weekend we had lunch at "Sari Asih" (CMIWW not really notice the restaurant name). The restaurant was located next to "ToKem" (Toko Kemanggisan) , its just a simple restaurant, didn't got any fancy interior :) the served Indonesian meal especially from Central Java. We ordered "Nasi Langi" (9K) and "Nasi Opor" (9K) with 2 glass of tea ( they used teh Tjap Botol ). In my opinion the taste was not bad, but I don't really like central java food because it taste too sweet. but if you are a Javanese & missed your home town then you should try this place :)
After lunch we went to "Tokem", this is my first time here :P (quite embarassing since its very near to my place) and the items they sold was amazing, bought a pack of tea "Tjap Botol", Luo Han Kuo, some canned food (its much much cheaper here) hehehe :)

Yesterday, I went to Puri Indah Mall with SC. Since we arrived near 18:00, every restaurant already full with people ending their fasting. So after browsed for some restaurant, we decided to tried "Aishiteru Japanese Restaurant". The interior didn't look very promising, typical fastfood restaurant.. we ordered "Oyakodon" ( I was crazy about all type of donburi), Original Udon, Miso Shiru and Ocha.

When It came, the meal appearance didn't look so bad, but when I dipped my chopstick into my bowl, I found out my donburi was a disaster, the rice under the eggs was soak with alot of soup, no taste, and there is alot ingredients that I didn't expect like paprika & carrot (emangnya gw sinchan?) :( hiks.... my dinner was ruined.... I WAS VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED, HOW COULD THEY SERVED THIS TO PEOPLE :(( I WILL NEVER COME BACK HERE AGAIN EVERRRR HUH!!!!!!!

We visited 3 different chinese restaurant at MTA last week and tried 3 kind of noodle they served. The first restaurant was "Noodle Cafe" - very crowded, we ordered "egg noodle with wonton & roast duck" (21.5K) , have to waited for half an hour just to know they put the wrong order on our table :( the food taste was not very special, not recommended lah :(

Then we decided to go down and visited "Canton Bay" and ordered "Dry Noodle with Lo Duck and Lo Pork" (24K), it tasted much better than the first one, good service too :).

After that we noticed that there is a new restaurant opening called "Huang Ting", operated under the same management with "The Duck King" and "Imperial Chef", so we decided to tried it next time we go to MTA, last night we came there and ordered "Noodle Soup with Shui Jiau Wonton"(26K). not bad - for that price, the noodle texture was perfect.. mmm after that we ordered "Xiao Long Bao"(16.8K).. delicious... i'll be back hehehe :),

Last Friday, I visited Komatchi Restaurant with SC, lately I always like to try "Donburi"(Japanese "rice bowl dish" consisting of fish, meat, vegetables or other ingredients simmered together and served over rice, The ingredients are often set at the last minute with egg) whenever I went to Japanese Restaurant.

This time I ordered "Katsudon" (Tonkatsu Domburi) Pork Cutlet Domburi. Katsudon is served with tonkatsu (deep fried breaded pork cutlet), egg and onions on top of the rice.) In my oppinion the pork cutlet was a little too sweet for my taste, but its OK lah ... mmm we also ordered a plate of "Gyoza" (Japanese Dumpling), and Ocha. When we finished I also bought a piece of "Onigiri" (Japanese Rice Ball). :)
