On our way home from Toba Lake, we stopped for lunch in a town called Perdagangan (about half an hour from Pematang Siantar). The restaurant sits on paddy fields that have been converted into fish ponds. The place appears simple and spartan, with a large wooden hut built right next to the fish ponds. We ordered several ikan mas (carps) to share. They weigh the fishes before cooking them and our orders total 2.3kg - 103.5K. We also ordered stink beans and grilled eggplants 9K, lalap or green vegetables 3K, rice 20K and a pitcher of citrus juice 35K to share. While waiting for the food being prepared, we have fun watching the fish in the ponds. Some of those fishes are huge, growing to as long as an adult's arm. A while later, our meals arrived accompanied by sambal andaliman as the chili sauce. The food tasted delicious, simple but honest. After we finished eating, we did a little ritual like every other guests there - throwing the leftovers into the pond. The effect is quite spectacular as the carps came charging for food. We really have a fun time there, I wish we can return there again next year :)

RM Rindu Hutajulu
Posted by jeny at 7:08 PM
While we're in Toba, I wanted so much to try the original Tapanuli dishes, but we were stuck with chinese food and hotel fare. The next day, me, my brother and SC went to find Lapo Batak. There were quite a lot of Lapo in the area and we didn't know which one is good, so we picked one called Rindu Hutajulu. We ordered my usual favorite: pork saksang, pork panggang, dali ni horbo AKA curdled buffalo milk (plain & spiced) and sayur ubi tumbuk. It tasted good, but not of the die-die-must-try variety. The pork was a bit tough, but their andaliman sauce are really spicy. I was hoping we could try another lapo just for comparison, but didn't have a chance since we're heading back home that afternoon.

Kok Tong
Posted by jeny at 11:45 AM
On our way to Toba Lake, we stopped by a local coffee shop at Siantar city called Kok Tong for a cup of coffee and tea. The place was full of locals having their coffee and smoking, but we had no choice and we choose to sit as far away from the smokers. We ordered a cup of black coffee, milk tea, teh talua (egg tea), half boiled egg and srikaya toast. I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't comment on the coffee, but it seems that my father & brother enjoyed it. They gave each of us a glass of plain water to accompany our drinks. I like my egg tea. It was sweet and savory. The toast was simple but delicious. Kok Tong sells their coffee under the name "bubuk kopi massa Kok Tong". They also have branches in Medan. :)

Tabona

Tabona is one of our must visit places whenever we went to Medan. This time, my family and I have lunch there before we went to Parapat for a two-day trip. The place was crowded when we arrived as it was lunch time. I've spotted some changes since our last visit. They are now placing chairs and parasols on the sidewalks outside the restaurant. We chose to sit outside and ordered our meals. I ordered a portion of bihun kari ayam. The taste is as delicious as it has always been. I've tried in vain to find a place in Jakarta serving bihun kari ayam that tasted this good. The chicken was tender, the soup was rich and tasty. I also liked the addition of chicken blood in the meal. You can count on me returning here again on my next trip to Medan.

Bakmie Tiong Sim
Posted by jeny at 12:49 PM
That afternoon, we decided to only have a light dinner, so we chose a noodle stall located at Jl. Bogor called Tiong Sim that can be reached by foot from our hotel. Actually, Tiong Sim noodle stall is also open at Jl. Selat Panjang, but a friend told us that the one at Jl. Bogor tasted better. We ordered a portion of wonton noodle 19K. I have to admit that the noodle was tasty and delicious (I don't know whether this is due to MSG or not, but I didn't feel thirsty afterwards). The wonton also tasted good. :)

Mee Kangkung Belacan
Posted by jeny at 10:57 AM
After Mie Hokkian Perdana, we went to Brastagi supermarket and then headed to Pasar Rame. Pasar Rame/Ramai is a traditional 2-story market where many authentic Medanese dishes, such as he chi, pi oh, stir fried noodles, various types of asinan buah, es campur are sold on the first floor and the second floor is used for selling clothes a la Mangga Dua in Jakarta. Dragging SC with me, I walked around the second floor to find some clothes. After I finished shopping, my stomach has already felt rather empty. We searched for the famous Mee Kangkung Belacan (stir fried noodles with kangkung AKA water convolvulus and fermented prawn). We found it in one of the food stalls in front of the market, besides mee kangkung, they also have various Chinese dishes. I ordered a portion of mee kangkung and dug happily into the noodle when it cames. The noodle was topped with prawn, fish ball, pork sausages (lap cheong), kangkung, and drenched in terasi sauce. The noodles have the right texture and the ingredients were fresh. It was also quite spicy. In short, it was a delicious meal. I forgot how much exactly we paid for the dish, but I'm sure its not more that 20K. :)

Mee Hokkien Perdana
Posted by jeny at 1:02 PM
From Tip Top, we continued to a noodle stall on Perdana street. According to our friend, this place serves delicious Hokkien noodle with more reasonable price than another famous noodle stall (Hok Seng if I'm not mistaken). We ordered a portion of noodle to share while our friend ordered black coffee from the kopi tiam. The noodle was delicious, egg noodle topped with prawn, fish ball, prawn ball (he keng), squid, chicken/pork meat with some green vegetables, spring onion & fried shallot. The soup was also good compared with so many so so no taste soup served by other noddle stalls. :)

Tip Top

After a light breakfast at Sinar Pagi, we continued our journey to try a noodle shop at Jl. Perdana, but we took a wrong turn and we passed by Kesawan (Ahmad Yani) street. We decided to stop for a while and try the famous Tip Top restaurant. I don't know whether this is the oldest restaurant in Medan, but the place seems to be in a good shape considering that it has been around for about a century. The building design was typical of Dutch colonial era. A uniformed waiter greeted us and led us to a table in the verandah.

RM Sinar Pagi

I've always wanted to try the real Medanese Soto, so I asked Sisca where's the best/authentic Soto Medan in Medan? She took us to a very crowded place called Sinar Pagi. They are famous for their soto. There are two types of soto: soto ayam and soto daging (beef). We ordered each to sample. The soto ayam came in a bigger bowl than soto daging. The soup tasted rich with strong hints of spices. Their perkedel (Indonesian croquette) was also good. Personally I like the soto ayam better than the soto daging. The dishes are quite pricey, but I think they're worth a try.

Sop Kambing Kumango
Posted by jeny at 5:33 PM
One of the food places we wanted to visit during our time in Medan is Sop Kambing Kumango, so on the first night we're in Medan, we asked Sisca to take us there. The place is located in Jl. Kumango. It was very crowded when we arrived. The patrons were ethnically diverse as we saw chinese, indonesian & indians sitting there enjoying their dishes and I thought this must be good. We ordered a portion of sop kambing to share. The sop kambing (mutton soup) tasted very rich & delicious. There was no hint of that distinct mutton smell in the meat & soup. The meat was very tender, I thought it must be cooked several hours in spices to reach this kind of taste & texture. The price was not cheap, but it was worth my every cent :)

Fountain Ice Cream Cafe
Posted by jeny at 3:54 PM
Fountain ice cream parlor is a very popular ice cream cafe back when I was a high school student in Medan. I remembered celebrating my birthday at Fountain with several friends, eating their famous birthday ice cream. When we visited Medan recently, I took SC to one of their branches at Sun Plaza just for old time's sake. Besides ice cream, they also serve various meals like sandwich or pasta. We ordered their banana split (with chocolate, rum & raisin & coffee ice cream) 13,75K to share. It still tasted great although we found a large piece of ice in one of the ice cream. The price was very cheap compared to Jakarta's ice cream parlor :)

Two nights at Selat Panjang

Selat Panjang
Last month, we took a short trip to Medan, where we checked in to a budget hotel called Wisma Sederhana located on Selat Panjang street. The street have been long known as a place to go for good food. At night, the street is packed with stalls selling all kinds of dishes ranging from bakpao, chicken rice, congee, stir fried dishes and many more. Below are some of the food we've managed to cover in two nights.

Nelayan
Posted by jeny at 5:57 PM
One of the restaurant we visited when we're in Medan is Nelayan, Apparently this is quite large Chinese restaurant chain in Medan, they have several restaurant located strategically at shopping centers. The one we visited was located at Sun Plaza. when we arrived, around 2PM the place was still very crowded, we have to queue for a while to get a table, as soon as we were seated, their waiter came with a tray of dimsum selection and asked us to pick. We didn't even have time to read all the menu listed in the paper :( so we picked : lumpia udang saus jamur 8.5K, kaki ayam saus tiram 8.5K, leng hong kien 12K, soup tim ayam obat 14K, sayap ayam panggang 12K, kepiting lunak mentega 21K, keladi special (u kok) 8.5K, ha kaou udang 12K, lumpia ayam sayur hitam (I guess what they mean is nori) 8.5K, bakso kepiting kulit tahu 12K and nasi tim ayam dalam bambu 11K. Overall the meal was only so so (some of the item we ordered are cold already, some taste weird), but I like the chicken rice cooked in bamboo and the chicken herbal soup. Other than that I really don't like their service style, kind of push you to pick the food as soon as possible and leave quickly because they have other customer waiting :( that's not what I had in mind if I want to eat dimsum.

SC & I went to Medan 2 weeks ago, and this is the first place we visit as soon as we landed. Located in the area called "Kampung Keling", this restaurant served quite authentic Indian cuisine in a very reasonable price. We ordered : "pilao rice" (aromatic basmati rice cooked in ghee and cumin seed) 5K, "peas saffron rice" (basmati rice cooked with peas and using saffron) 5K, 2 "paneer pilao rice" (basmati rice cooked with cottage cheese) @10K, fish curry 18K, 2 garlic naan @13K and 1 Dhaal (lentil soup) 8K. All of it were delicious, we hope we can come back again sometime to try their other specialties.

Bihun Kari AyamOne of the food I tried in Medan last holiday was Bihun Kari Ayam (Chicken Curry served with rice noodle) at RM Tabona. I insisted to have lunch here the first day I arrived. RM Tabona served a delicious Chicken Curry & Beef Curry, usually eaten with rice or bihun. The curry tasted so different from the one I tried at Padangnese restaurants. It tasted richer and spicier.

On our way to Parapat, we stopped by Pematang Siantar for lunch. Pematang Siantar situated 128 km southeast of Medan and 52 km from Parapat, is the capital city of Simalungun. When I said I want to have Bataknese food, the driver took us to Rumah Makan Rap Taruli. My parent used go to this place whenever they go to Siantar, Rap Taruli served Bataknese food. We ordered panggang, saksang & sayur singkong tumbuk. Very delicious and the price was very reasonable compare to the portion :P

A day @ Medan
Posted by jeny at 9:47 AM

Last saturday, the first thing pop in my head after we arrived at Medan, North Sumatra is where are we going to have lunch. I insisted my Mom to take me to "Bakmie Kumango". So We headed there, and I ordered my usual plate of "Chicken Noodle" while my Mom ordered "Chicken Hainamnese Rice". The noodle is not as delicious as I remembered, maybe because of my high expetation. but It still the best noodle I have ever taste. Bon Apetit :)

After lunch we headed to "Pasar Ramai". Its a popular traditional market in Medan, Lots of foods (off course :)) and other goods hehehehe. After we circling the market for about 1 hour, I felt thirsty. So we stopped at some food stall and ordered Es Sekoteng, Es Cendol and He Ci (fried prawn, tofu, kangkung served with sour and sweet sauce). mmm... quite good. Actually there is still alot of food available there, such as e-mie, wonton noodle, nasi campur etc, but since I just had lunch I can't ordered them all hehehehe...
That night on my way back home to my hometown "Kisaran" (about 3-4 hours from Medan), We stopped at "RM 100", located at Jalan raya Medan Kisaran km 100. This is quite a popular restaurant according to my mom, they served alot variety of seafood for us to choose. So We ordered "Grilled Bawal Fish", "Grilled Pare Fish", Udang Tauco (stir fried prawn with fermented soybean sauce), and "Cah Kangkung". mmm not bad... Selamat Makan :)
