The Wang
Posted by jeny at 10:02 PM
We tried this place last year, but somehow I've forgotten to write about it. The Wang is located at Plaza Lippo Sudirman, at the exact spot where there used to be a Chinese restaurant called Dragon City which served quite delicious Halal dimsum. The restaurant was closed in 2008, but we later heard that they reopened as The Wang, so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant's interior was pretty much the same as before, with its reception area filled with a huge display of shark's fin (we didn't like this as we don't endorse eating shark's fin or any other endangered species). We ordered the usual dimsum menu: fish congee with century egg 32K, siew mai 16K, ha kau 16K, pangsit udang salad 18K, lumpia goreng 18K, pangsit pocai 16K, cheong fan udang 18K, cheong fan cakwee13K, pie ayam panggang 13K, lumpia saus tiram 18K, talas goreng (wu kok) 13K, tan tart 13K and ended it with puding mangga 22K, pudding kacang almond 22K, pudding alpukat 22K, and es lemon sereh 22K. Overall the dishes were quite decent, but it seemed to have lost its old charm, plus the price was quite pricey compared to other dimsum restaurants.

Ce Wei
Posted by jeny at 8:08 AM
Last month, we had dinner with my high school friend and her husband at Ce Wei restaurant, Pluit Village (used to be Megamal). I've heard about this restaurant since they opened their first restaurant at Wisma Dharmala Sakti several years ago, but I've also heard that Ce Wei is quite expensive, so it wasn't high on our list of restaurants to try. We changed our mind when we saw that a certain credit card had a discount program at Ce Wei. The interior is not really appealing and the lighting is a bit dark, but the restaurant was quite full at dinner time, so we're hoping the food will be good :)

Ce Wei

The discount didn't included BBQ items, so make sure you asked first before ordering. So here's what we ordered; we started with tofu and crab soup 26.8K, hot & sour seafood soup 26.8K, and pork & lotus soup 28.8K, then 2 combination bbq platter 68.8K, soft shell crab with salty egg 54.8K, angsio iga babi 68.8K (came with fried man tou), tofu with mushroom 52.8K, stir fried eggplant with spicy sauce 42.8K. Overall it was delicious, I especially liked their softshell crab, tofu with musroom & the sechuan soup. :)

Tian Xi
Posted by jeny at 3:29 PM
Two weeks ago, we had dinner at Tian Xi, Senayan City. The restaurant is under the same management as Red Duck, with a big sign that said they used no pork & no lard. The place is designed in Chinese contemporary style and it's quite spacious. After thumbing through its extensive menu, I decided to order nasi sapo bebek original tian xi 55K, while SC ordered his usual comfort food kwetiaw seafood siram tiram 43K. The waitress informed us that it would take about 20 minutes to prepare my claypot rice. SC's kwetiaw siram came first. It tasted delicious with fresh seafood. I had a good time helping SC finish his meal. My claypot rice came out on time. It was still sizzling hot, but I liked it. The rice was cooked 'al dente' (not too mushy as I usually found in claypot rice), The oyster sauce was a bit overpowering, but the roast duck & black Chinese mushroom was truly delicious. The meat was succulent and flavorsome. The experience was quite pricey, but I think it was worth it.

Depot 369
Posted by jeny at 9:56 AM
Two months ago, as we were passing Mangga Besar street while looking for a place to eat, I spotted a place bearing a small sign "Depot 369, Shanghai Dumpling & Noodle". It got us interested and we decided to give it a try. The restaurant's interior and ambiance look quite promising, except for the fact that there's no non-smoking section. We ordered a bowl of Mie Kou Rou (noodles topped with soy braised pork meat) 29K. It was delicious. The next time, we went to their branch near Kedoya's Food Hall with a friend and I ordered their Mie Sop Shanghai (Shanghai noodle soup) 40K. It was disappointingly bland, but SC offered to swap my order with his Song Mie (Song noodle) 24K, which tasted much better. I have a feeling that the Mangga Besar branch offered better tasting noodle, so we went back there again a couple of days ago and ordered the classic wonton noodle 21K and Martabak Tiongkok 15K. The wonton noodle was good, but not as good as the Mie Kou Rou. I found the Martabak Tiongkok to be a bit bland, but SC loved it because the spice was not too overpowering. :)

Siauw A Tjiap
Posted by jeny at 11:10 PM
While growing up, SC & his family has many fond memories of eating out at Siauw A Tjiap, one of the old school Chinese restaurants in Jakarta. He kept saying about how good their food were. We tried it once last year by ordering take outs from their Taman Ratu branch and the result was disappointing. Some of the food even tasted weird. But still, SC assured me that maybe the old one located at Pancoran would taste better. So last month, as I passed this area, I entered the place and ordered one of their specialties: Lindung Cah Fumak (about 43K) to bring home. This time I was not disappointed, the dish really tasted delicious. The eel was deep fried until crispy and they use some fermented red rice wine in the sauce. I guess I'll be back later for more :)

Bihun Siram Picis
Posted by jeny at 5:03 AM
Not far from Nasi Ulam Misjaya, there's a small place bearing the sign PICIS. I remembered that someone said Picis is famous for its burung dara goreng (fried pigeon). However, I also heard that the price for that delicacy is unreasonably high, so I didn't dare to order it. Instead, I ordered a portion of bihun siram to take home. A portion of bihun siram cost about 30K, also quite pricey, but I think it was worth it since they put in some prawns, meat, pork's liver and intestines in the topping. The rice noodle was cooked until it was a bit burnt, then they cooked the thick soup full of green vegetables and meat. They packaged the rice noodle and thick soup in separate wrappers so I can mix it later when I got home. The aroma was quite fragrant as they cooked and I have high hope for the dish. Yet when I tasted it, I noticed a little sour taste in the thick soup, which is weird for me. The chili sauce was also a bit sour. I'm not sure whether the dish is supposed to taste like that or not, but I didn't like it.

Tan Tan

From Marmalade, we went to Pancious. After that, while strolling around Miniapolis area, I noticed a restaurant called Tan Tan that puts a non halal sign in front of the restaurant. It grabbed my attention and I couldn't resist going inside. The restaurant is decorated in red with fancy styling. It was lovely, but I was sceptical that this place can serve authentic Chinese cuisines. It looked more like a place for parents to hang out while waiting for their kids to finish playing.

Macau Che Jian
Posted by jeny at 6:44 AM
One Friday evening, we were looking for the ATM center in Grand Indonesia when I noticed a restaurant called Macau Che Jian next to the ATM center. After scanning the menu, we decided to go inside and get a seat. This restaurant serves Macaunese cuisine which is quite different from the usual Chinese cuisine because of the Portuguese influence. One of their specialties is Macau baked rice. It's rice topped with chicken or seafood then covered with tomato/cheese/Macau sauce and then baked. That evening, I ordered Macau baked rice with chicken and macau sauce 27.5K. The taste was quite unique because Macau sauce tasted a bit like curry sauce, but not too spicy. The portion was moderate with reasonable price :)

Peach Garden
Posted by jeny at 1:24 PM
Following that little incident at Siam Garden, we thought about ending our adventure as we were already very full. But there's one more restaurant to try. We decided to order egg tart 12.8K from Peach Garden, a chinese restaurant. It was quite good, although the service was a bit slow -- understandable because of the crowd. We returned several weeks later to sample their congee (just so so), carrot cake (delicious) and beef noodle (also delicious). Overall some of the item were delicious and some was only so so. :)

Mandarin Chicken Rice
Posted by jeny at 3:30 PM
Our next stop is a small restaurant perched at the front of PX Pavillion's restaurant alley. It's so tiny that 20 people would be enough to crowd the place. As the name suggests, Mandarin Chicken Rice only sells chicken rice. So we ordered a portion of Hainam chicken rice 28K. At first, I underestimated this place since good hainanese chicken rice is not easy to find, but it was surprisingly good. The steamed chicken was delicious with generous portion. The Hainam rice also tasted good. I think we'll be back to this place whenever I crave good chicken rice but to lazy too cook :)

Mie Goreng Kucai 35
Posted by jeny at 7:17 AM
From Ibu Kacamata, we went to the other side of Senen Flyover. Located near the distinctive Wayang Orang Bharata building, there's an old restaurant bearing the name Bakmi Kucai 35. It is a typical old Chinese eatery, a bit shabby but we wanted to try it as we've heard rave reviews about this place. We ordered a plate of Bakmi Kucai (medium) 17.5K to share among the four of us. They asked us whether we wanted to have lap cheong (Chinese pork sausage) in the noodle and we nodded enthusiastically. When it came, we were amazed at the generous portion. It was enough for 2 hungry men. Luckily we've only ordered one portion. The noodle is undoubtedly one of the best fried noodle I've ever tasted. It was delicious, a bit sweet, but not too overpowering. Too bad the location is quite far so we can't go there regularly. :)

Bubur Kwang Tung
Posted by jeny at 4:32 AM
Last weekend, we went to Pecenongan to dine at the famous Bubur Kwang Tung. It's been so long since our last visit. The decor remained roughly the same. A typical Chinese-style restaurant with rather tacky celebrity photos paraded along the wall. As usual, we asked for a non-smoking area and was directed to the second floor which was still empty. I'm pretty sure Bubur Kwangtung has no non-smoking area and we were led to the second floor only because it was empty.
Bubur Kwangtung
We ordered the famous crab congee 45K and a portion of tahu special ala Kwang Tung 25K to share. The congee came in a large portion, more than enough for two. It was cooked in broth and the cracked crab was placed in the middle of the bowl with lots and lots of crab egg. The accompanying condiments were ginger, chili and soy sauce. Still delicious (and consistent) after all these years. The tahu special was also great, much more delicious than the one we had at Dharma Kitchen, although we would have preferred that they used ordinary tofu instead of Japanese egg tofu :)

Dharma Kitchen
Posted by jeny at 8:17 AM
2 weeks ago, we had lunch at a vegetarian restaurant called Dharma Kitchen. The first floor is occupied by a vegetarian bakery & cafe, while the second floor is for the restaurant. We chose to sit at the cafe. There are two seating areas, the tatami area and tables area. The waitress gave us two sets of menu, one from the cafe & one from the restaurant. After studying the menu, we ordered tahu gulung special (regular) 38K and tahu jamur special 48K to go with nasi hainam polos 6K and ice tea (refill) 4K. The Hainamnese rice & ice tea were served 5 minutes after we ordered, but the other dishes and white rice took almost 25 minutes to appear. The tahu jamur special is tofu topped with green vegetables and mushroom with brown sauce. The taste was barely acceptable and the tofu have a strong soybean-ish smell (bau langu). On the other hand, the tahu gulung special is quite good. It didn't have that soybean smell, probably because it's deep fried. As for the Hainamnese chicken rice, I think they put too much sesame oil in it. Overall, I think vegetarian restaurant doesn't suit my taste :P

Fat Ya

Last month, we tried a new restaurant called Fat Ya at Plaza Indonesia. It's the newest restaurant coming from the same management that runs Duck King as well. The interior is quite interesting with duck figures on the wall that look like they're lifted from south park cartoon. However, the place was quite noisy as there are a few large speakers about 10 meters away, blaring whatever tunes the mall DJs were playing at the moment.

Lau's Kopitiam

Lately, kopi tiam (coffee shop) seems to have become a trend as new stores are opening left and right in the past few months. So we were curious about Lau's Kopitiam which has just opened at Emporium Mall Pluit. They offer a number of light meals, such as cakwe 5K, lumpia goreng 10K, pangsit goreng 10K, telur rebus setengah matang 5K and also heartier menus like sandwiches, mie, kwetiaw & bihun, rice dishes. It was quite crowded when we arrived. Since we've just had lunch with SC's parents, we only ordered regular kaya toast 12K with teh susu (milk tea) 10K. The kaya toast tasted delicious with old style thick bread and kaya/srikaya jam (made from coconut milk, egg and caramelized sugar). The milk tea was good too, although I suspected that they were using Lipton milk tea. :)

Teo Chew Palace
Posted by jeny at 5:52 PM
2 months ago, I was quite keen to try this new place because since its opening, Teo Chew Palace has been very crowded. More over, there was a 30% discount for BCA credit card. So one night, SC & I tried it. We ordered teochew porridge, and kwetiaw siram seafood for SC. The place was quite full and we felt that we were being ignored as we had to nag several times for our meal & drinks. My teochew porridge looked and tasted disappointing. The one I had at Pancawarna tasted much better (and much cheaper too) than this one. SC's kwetiaw was just OK, nothing special. After we finished our meal, we asked for our bill and it turned out that our bill have to reach 100K after discount. Othewise, we couldn't get the discount. So we ordered a dessert (mango sago) which fortunately tasted good.

After that not so successful experience, I still came back here with my high school friends just to try their dimsum. I called ahead to reserve, but were told that they can't provide reservation on weekend. Luckily, we can get a table. We ordered several kinds of dishes that were brought by passing carts, some of the dimsum tasted good (their egg tart was delicious), some was only so so, and we still have to nag several times for our drink. Overall, I think this place is overrated, The price of the dimsum we had after the discount was not that cheap either compared to other dimsum places in Jakarta.

Soup restaurant

Years ago, I've visited this place when they were still located at Plaza Semanggi. The restaurant specializes in Chinese-style soups and some of the soups featured in their menu were said to be good for health. However, since they moved to Plaze Indonesia, I haven't had the chance to visit again. Last month, when we happened to be at Plaza Indonesia, we passed Soup Restaurant. I scanned their menu and was suprised to find that the price is very reasonable. We decided to have dinner there and ordered Teochew olive rice (teochew black olive mixed with rice) 28K, kwetiaw siram, and their soup of the day 40K plus chinese tea. The soup came in the claypot as we ordered the medium size for 2. We were surprise to find the portion to be quite generous and the taste was simply delicious. The soup is clear wintermelon soup. My olive rice came in a rattan basket lined with plastic sheet. The taste was so delicious, I didn't even want to share this with SC. SC's kwetiaw was also decent.

Earlier this month, we had dimsum at this restaurant as they offer 50% discount on their anniversary. The restaurant is located on the second floor of Batavia hotel. The place is spacious, with some big private room as well. The menu is more or less the usual dimsum fare we've always had. We ordered: bubur ikan 25K, chiongfan udang 13.8K, pangsit kucai udang 12.8K, mie urat sapi 28.8K, kaki ayam 11.8K, puff panggang 12.8K, siomay 6.4K, chiongfan chasiu 12.8K, eggtart 11.8K, pangsit talas 11.8K, xiao long bao 13.8K, hakau 13.8K, udang telor asin 94K. In my opinion, most of the dishes were only so so, nothing special. But the worst part of our experience is the service. It took more than 15 minutes for each dish to appear. I don't think we're going to visit this place again.

Kwetiaw Kerang Singapore

Last month, we had dinner with several friends at Kwetiaw goreng Singapore Pluit. We've been here several times and each time, their kwetiaw goreng kerang never disappoints despite its petite portion. The place is always full during lunch and dinner time, so it's better to make a reservation beforehand. That night we ordered: Udang Cioyam (lada garam) L : 115K, Tiram Goreng Telor L : 36.2K, Lumpia Udang L : 56.2K, Kwetiaw Gr Kerang : 20K, Cah Than M : 29.2K, Sop Seafood Bamboo Mushroom L : 54.2K, Ayam Gr Garing L : 58.2K, Kepiting Soka L : 60.2K. and for dessert we ordered Es Campur Solo :13K. In my opinion, besides their kwetiaw kerang, all other dishes were OK though not really superb. Based on our experience, their cumi cioyam tastes better than their udang cioyam. Their dessert, es campur Solo is also good. :)

That afternoon, we decided to only have a light dinner, so we chose a noodle stall located at Jl. Bogor called Tiong Sim that can be reached by foot from our hotel. Actually, Tiong Sim noodle stall is also open at Jl. Selat Panjang, but a friend told us that the one at Jl. Bogor tasted better. We ordered a portion of wonton noodle 19K. I have to admit that the noodle was tasty and delicious (I don't know whether this is due to MSG or not, but I didn't feel thirsty afterwards). The wonton also tasted good. :)

Mee Kangkung Belacan
Posted by jeny at 10:57 AM
After Mie Hokkian Perdana, we went to Brastagi supermarket and then headed to Pasar Rame. Pasar Rame/Ramai is a traditional 2-story market where many authentic Medanese dishes, such as he chi, pi oh, stir fried noodles, various types of asinan buah, es campur are sold on the first floor and the second floor is used for selling clothes a la Mangga Dua in Jakarta. Dragging SC with me, I walked around the second floor to find some clothes. After I finished shopping, my stomach has already felt rather empty. We searched for the famous Mee Kangkung Belacan (stir fried noodles with kangkung AKA water convolvulus and fermented prawn). We found it in one of the food stalls in front of the market, besides mee kangkung, they also have various Chinese dishes. I ordered a portion of mee kangkung and dug happily into the noodle when it cames. The noodle was topped with prawn, fish ball, pork sausages (lap cheong), kangkung, and drenched in terasi sauce. The noodles have the right texture and the ingredients were fresh. It was also quite spicy. In short, it was a delicious meal. I forgot how much exactly we paid for the dish, but I'm sure its not more that 20K. :)

3 weeks ago, we stopped by Glodok for breakfast before heading to Mangga Dua Mall. Our destination is Ketupat Gloria 65 recommended by a friend. Located near Toko Kawi, the place is pretty spartan, located in front of a ruko (shophouse) with only one table to sit. We ordered a portion of Ketupat Sayur which consists of ketupat (rice cake), fried tofu, boiled egg, and squash juliennes, drenched in coconut milk and topped with chilli sambal and fried shallot. It was delicious! It was not too sweet nor salty and the squash was still crunchy. The price was quite high as it cost us about 18K per portion. Though delicious, I think I still prefer Ketupat Sayur in Padang style.

Cosi
Posted by jeny at 5:59 PM
Last month, after office hours, we visited Cosi, a restaurant located inside FX lifestyle Xnter. We've been to Cosi several times at their Pluit branch and in my memory it was not bad. We asked for a non-smoking area, and unsurprisingly, were ushered to a table outside near the escalator. Although designated as non-smoking, the location still smelled, probably caused by smoke coming from inside the restaurant or the chain smokers sitting on Segafredo's second floor. Cosi calls itself a Hongkong and Macau cafe, serving Macau snack, Hongkong BBQ, Macau Curry, Portuguese styled baked rice, Hong Kong street food, Designer Congee, La Mian and Macaroni, Sandwich & Bun, thick toast and Western hot plate.

Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi
Posted by jeny at 6:33 AM
Last week, SC noticed a new restaurant at Taman Palem Lestari Boulevard's "restaurant row". The place is called Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi. I'm so excited when I heard about it and we decided to try it first thing in the morning the next day. The place was already open at 6am, perfect for breakfast. We came in and ordered a portion of nasi tim with a raw free-range chicken egg on top (19K). The rice was served alongside a plate of cilantro and a bowl of soup. I quickly mixed the egg with the rice, resulting in a sort of creamy texture. I never had nasi tim with raw egg before and to me, it tasted so delicious. I don't like the mushy type of nasi tim, so this kind of nasi tim is perfect for me since I can still feel the rice grain. The price was quite expensive compared to the one we usually had, but I thought it was worth my every rupiah. Btw, they also serve chicken noodle, rice noodle, sui kiaw, pangsit, somay, mie kangkung, baso goreng, otak-otak, tahu baso, baso sapi & various traditional cake. But I think I'll be back for their heavenly nasi tim. :)

Glass House
Posted by jeny at 5:12 PM
Last month, we visited a place called Glass House located at Pluit area. The place has a quite nice design & concept. The menu is a combination of Asian & Western dishes. Since we've already had lunch somewhere else, we didn't order much. We only ordered a portion of fish & chips and warm chocolate cake. The fish & chips was quite good, served with what they said is tar tar sauce. The fish was fresh & fried in the right crispiness. As for the chocolate cake, the portion was small, but the cake itself was not bad at all. It was warm, using dark chocolate I presume, with a right texture. A funny thing happened when we paid the bill. I usually keep restaurant's bill for review. But the waiter didn't give me back my receipt, and when I asked for it, it came back with a very crumpled paper. :))

Last month, still during Lebaran holiday, we had lunch at a little place called Lao Xiang Bak Kut Teh. The restaurant specialty is Bak Kut Teh, but they also serve various Chinese dishes. We ordered: Bak Kut Teh Komplit (usus, hati & perut) 28K, Udang Telor Asin 40K, Ikan Kerapu Masak Tausi 60K, Pare Paikut 30K, Terong Balado 18K and 1 stir-fried vegetable. Overall I think this place was great as the dishes tasted quite delicious. And most of all, the price was very reasonable. :)

Menu1

Last month while we're at Pluit Junction, I noticed a nice & cleanly decorated restaurant called Menu1. The place is large and spacious, with white tile & green accent. I like the place instantly so we decided to try it. It is a Chinese food restaurant specializing in porridge, appetizer and dessert. They serve varieties of porridge, hot and cold desserts such as: sago pudding & pancakes, grass jelly ice, beancurd pudding & ice cream.

We had family dinner last month at Cuisine Cuisine, a Chinese restaurant on the second floor of Pluit Junction. Apparently this restaurant is under the same management with Red Saphire. I'm not the one ordering, so this is pretty much what I remembered what we had. We had steamed fish, fish maw soup, sapo tofu, assorted pork, stir fried po chai with egg, century egg & salted duck egg, steamed prawn, and another type of sapo I don't remember the name. Overall all the meal were delicious, good services, although the price was quite pricey.

Red Sapphire
Posted by jeny at 9:02 AM
Two weeks ago we had dimsum at Red Sapphire, a new chinese restaurant located at a new place called Pluit Junction. It looks glamorous from outside and nice from the inside. The walls are plastered with red wallpapers and Chinese poems written on them. A few pieces of Chinese antique furniture are scattered about. The dimsum menu consists of about 30 items to choose from. We picked mini egg tart (3pcs) 10.8K, prawn dumpling 13.8K, Xiao Long Bao 12.8K, chicken feet 10.8K, beef cheong fan 13.8K, prawn cheong fan 15.8K, char siew cheong fan 13.8K, siew mai 13.8K, taro cake 12.8K, chasiu pie 12.8K, duck dumpling 12.8K, fried prawn dumpling 13.8K, fried durian dumpling 20K, pork ribs with taro 12.8K. with Chinese tea (ti kuan yin) 5K. Overall, the dishes tasted above average & the price was moderate, but the service was quite slow. We had to wait for some time for every order to come to our table, especially our last order: fried durian dumpling, which took more than 30 minutes. Hopefully if we have the chance to return in the future, they would have already improved their service.

Furama
Posted by jeny at 9:02 AM
Last month, we had dinner at Furama restaurant on Hayam Wuruk street. The place was very crowded, since there was a birthday party at that moment. Luckily, we managed to grab a spot as soon as we arrived. The menu was quite extensive. We ordered ayam garam crispy 46.7K, lapis kuping babi 28.8K, goreng jamur kulit tahu 28.8K, tim kaki ayam 8.8K, siew mai udang 11.8K, hakau udang 12.8K, udang goreng telur asin 58.8K, wong san cah fumak 43.8K, sapo terong furama 39.8K. Overall most of the dishes was only so so. Their dimsums were not fresh anymore, maybe they made it in the morning. I once read in Laksmi new Jakarta Good Food Guide that this place got the best udang telur asin in town, but it fell far short of the mark set by Liyen's signature dish. The sapo terong took ages to arrive. We had to ask several times and it finally came out after we have finished with our meals. :(

Wan Toe
Posted by jeny at 5:36 AM
Last month, After working hour, I'm meeting SC at Mall Ambassador for dinner. The place we chose to have dinner this time is a small place called Wan Toe located at the left corner of the mall. I arrived early and the room was half full. I asked for a table for two in non-smoking section. To my surprise, I was ushered to the very back of the restaurant, where's there's only 2-3 table available and with the aircon blowing to the back my head. I was very uncomfortable with this situation & later asked to move to the corner of the smoking section.
Wan Toe
The menu is mostly Asian selection, so I ordered Udang Telor Asin (fried prawn in salted egg sauce) and lindung goreng (deep fried eel) to eat with 2 bowl of rice, plus a plate of durian goreng for dessert. I always looked for udang telor asin first whenever I entered a new restaurant. The udang telor asin was different from the one from Li Yen as they put fried curry leaves on top of the dish, giving it an aromatic smell, but I still prefer Li Yen's over this one. Their lindung goreng was only OK and a bit on the sweet side. Their dessert was quite oily with average taste. In short, there's nothing here that makes us want to return. OK, maybe for the Udang Telor Asin, but only for take away order.

No, I'm not blogging about ngkoh2, it still about food. Koh Cu Ong is selling smoked chicken (available both free-range & broiler chicken) & honey roasted pork. He sells it from a small cart in front of Ngesti supermarket. Koh Cu Ong claims that he has been selling from that spot for more than four decades. We bought some of the smoked chicken & roasted pork. Both of it tasted super duper delicious. The pork was so crispy while the chicken meat was so tender. His stall is going to be my regular destination everytime i go to Bogor.

Kamseng Restaurant
Posted by jeny at 12:31 PM
Last month I bought a new book by Laksmi Pamuntjak called Jakarta Good Food Guide 2008-2009, it consist of about 400 eateries from all over the place in Jakarta. One of the place recommended by this book was this sapo restaurant called Kamseng, served all kind of congee 24 hours. The congee selection include : beef, all kind of pork offal, squid, fish, chicken, Guangzhou - Beijing - Shanghai - Taiwan Special, saklon, seafood, prawn, meatball, eel, 3 flavor, crab and plain. Since we're still a bit full from nasi goreng, we only ordered the eel congee 24K with telur phitan 5.5K. The meal came in a hot sapo pot, the congee was very tasty but the texture was too fine. Usually I didn't like this kind of congee but this one can makes me scrape the bottom of the bowl. later I found out that we can choose a coarse type of congee. With this price plus it was much2 more delicious than the famous congee next door, we surely will be back. :)

The first thing that grab my attention from this place is its interior. Decorated in Malay's kampong house style, using bird cage as their hanging lamp, plus the servant dressed in sarong and kebaya makes this place quite catchy. Located at Pacific Place, served malaysian nyonya cuisine. such as nasi lemak, asam laksa, char kuay teow etc. we decided to order the asam laksa 35.5K, kuay teow 28.5K with teh tarik 13.5K and honey lime 17.5K. Actually the food was not bad, but not really suit my taste. the asam laksa's concoction was too thick compared to what I had at Penang. but the taste was OK though. the kuay teow was too sweet and a bit too oily, the teh tarik was good, but my honey lime turn out to be kum quat juice. :)

This place is one of SC's favorite place. Located at Taman Palem Lestari - West Jakarta, served Jambinese noodle. they served 2 types of noodle : tamie kecil and tamie lebar in various size (regular, regular with double topping, big, big with double topping & with soup), they also served kwetiau & bihun. We usually only ordered the regular portion (11K) plus one bowl of pangsit ikan (15K), the noodle came with a bowl of broth soup (fish & meat). What make this noodle special is we can add several condiment to the noodle and soup to enhanced the taste. I usually mixed it with a little black vinegar, fish sauce, chilli sauce, and chilli slices. and it tasted so delicious, but some times too much chilli makes my stomach hot all day long. :p

Last week, SC drag me to tried Bihun Bebek 75 located at Pluit Sakti Raya, we heard that this place served 'duck beehon' with soup made from chinese herbs. So although we're still full from previous lunch at dapur umum & ragusa, we entered and ordered a portion of bihun bebek, the meal came with a bowl of beehon topped with steam duck slices, spring onnion & cilantro, the soup was put in separate bowl. I tried the soup first, since the soup smells so good, the soup itself was really delicious. next I tried to mixed the soup with the duck beehon, the meal was delicious, but the soup became a bit salty :)

Bakmi Keriting Siantar 19

Last weekend I craved for Bakmi Keriting Siantar. A lot of noodle stalls claim that they sell this kind of noodle, but finding an authentic (and tasty) one is quite difficult. After asking a friend about this, SC took me to a restaurant at Muara Karang called "Bakmi Keriting Siantar 19" (still in the Muara Karang traditional market area) and we had a bowl of Bakmi Keriting Siantar 12K and Bihun Kari. It was very delicious. The minced meat was juicy & generous, the wonton was also not bad. I think we will be back again this weekend for more :)

We had our last dimsum last year at SunCity Luxury Club located at Lindeteves Trade Center. From the interior and ambiance we can guess that it is a fine dining chinese restaurant. We arrived late so our friends have already started ordering and we just sat and dig in. One of the orders that I found quite special was the roasted baby duck 118K (4pcs). It was pricey but tasted good.. and to eat it, they provided us with a set of plastic gloves, so our hands wouldn't get dirty. The other menus were also delicious, such as the fish porridge 28K, xiao long bao 13.8K, talas goreng 11.8K, lobak goreng tauge saos XO, tan tart 11.8K. The desert was great too. We ordered puding sago mangga, pudding mangga, tim ginseng dengan kurma merah 22K and gui ling gao.

2 weeks ago we had a family dimsum brunch at this new restaurant called May Star located a Le Grandeur Hotel (ex Dusit Hotel). I don't really like the interior (imho the romantic & flowery decoration just don't match with Chinese cuisine), plus it was so cold there. The restaurant have a vast selection of dim sum, and they offered a portion of roast duck for only 1K if our bill reach 500K. Overall the meal was good, I especially like their "chrisanthium pudding" and "Chinese snake soup" but not their "almond pudding". Overall we spent about 75K per person and it already include the roast duck. :)

This time we arrived quite early, but the place was already full with people. We sat and ordered everything from the dimsum list: chicken claw with black bean sauce 9.8K, steamed pork ribs with garlic 13.8K, xiao long bao 15.8K, deep fried crispy wan tan dumpling 15.8K, deep fried yam dumpling 13.8K, pan fried carrot cake 13.8K, baked BBQ pork puff 13.8K, deep fried man tao, baked egg tart 9.8K, steamed prawn cheong fan 15.8K. Bihun Bebek Beijing
Posted by jeny at 12:23 PM
Last Friday, we're planning to have dimsum with some friends at Ah Yat, but when we arrive at the Golden Boutique Hotel around lunch time, it was filled with people, and the waiter outside the restaurant informed us that the Dimsum menus were already sold out. We decided to go to ITC Mangga Dua and have our lunch there instead. Since it was 2 days before Eid-ul Fitri, some of the eateries there were closed. Fortunately, we found a place called Bihun Bebek Beijing that was still open. We got a table and started to eat everything put in front of us as we were very hungry. There were bakso ikan & talas goreng, 4 packs of tape singkong @3K, 6 portions of bihun bebek @26K, 2 portions of nasi kari, 1 roti cane + kari kambing 20K, 2 portions of rujak @15K, 10 glasses of liang teh. Overall, the meal was delicious, but we were quite shocked when we paid as it was quite pricey. I don't know whether this was because the coming Eid-ul Fitri made the raw materials expensive or because this place does have a higher price tags.

Lately, I often find myself visiting this place. It is located on Jl. Sunda (next to ATL Hayam Wuruk & Bakmi Gajah Mada). When I first heard about this place, I was thinking of a place with chinese interiors, but I was surprised when I entered the building. It is chic & cool, bit white with minimalist design. It has murals painted on the wall, white & pink furniture and high ceiling. I instantly fell in love with the decor. (plus they have a fast & free wifi, and let us sit there for hours )

Jun Njan Restaurant

About 2 months ago, Jun Njan opened their new branch at Pluit. So we decided to have a family lunch there. The place was quite crowded at lunch time, but fortunately we managed to get a table. I don't really like the interior design. It looks like that the designer was aiming for a minimalist look but ended up with numerous ill-suited chinese decorations. It makes the restaurant looks more crowded that it really is. So we ordered: ayam garam, fish, prawn, kepiting telur asin, tofu, and fried noodle. Overall the meal was OK, except the ayam garam was way too salty (the restaurant manager promised to remedy this), while the tofu and kepiting telur asin were delicious. We will visit this place again someday.

[CLOSED] Dimsum at Happy Dragon Pub

Last month, we have dimsum at Happy Dragon Pub located at Le-Grandeur Hotel (Dusit). They offer dimsum buffet for only 42K++ (including chinese tea) every Monday to Saturday (from 10.30am to 2.30pm), and 09.00am to 02.30pm every sunday and public holiday. The restaurant ambience was quite unusual, it was decorated to look like an 'Old China Town'. it was quite colorfull, but I still feel weird when I saw a singing dragon band painted on the wall of the stage.

Dimsum at Sands
Posted by jeny at 11:58 AM
Enticed by a promotional banner that Sands is offering 50% off for Dimsum, we decided to try it one Sunday morning. We arrived quite early so we can still get a table without queueing. After being seated, we were given a piece of paper to order the dimsum. We found out that the discounted items was only a small selection from the list, so we ordered the discounted items plus a pot of Chinese Tea (Oolong, if I'm not mistaken). The orders seemed to take forever to show up that we have to nag the waiters several times for our order, but other higher priced items were plentiful. There are stalls serving noodle, porridge, etc on one side of the restaurant and carts moving in and around the tables. I wonder if this is a tactic to "encourage" starved guests to go for the pricier items? We ended up picking up some of them. They tasted quite delicious, but as expected, expensive. We really disliked our tea because the water tasted so weird. It was salty. For a place of Sand's caliber, using contaminated water to brew its tea is simply unforgivable. Overall, not recommended if you're looking for an affordable dimsum.

Sands

Later, we went downstairs (to the Carrefour's level) to a Chinese Tea Shop called Siang Ming Tea Shop (a branch from the one at Bungur's), They got a vast selection of quality Chinese Tea and nice Yi Xing tea pots. Bought a pack of rose tea, and had several a cup of very decent tea prepared & poured by the owner herself.

Their 'Udang telor Asin' is one of my all time favorite dishes, but since it was too expensive, this time we didn't order that. We order one of Liyen's signature dishes besides 'udang telor asin' is 'Ayam Garam' (salted chicken), 'Babi Hong' (kiu nyuk), sapo seafood, fish soup and noodles. Overall the meal was good, Their 'ayam garam' was so delicious, their 'babi hong' was delicious but still not as good as the one from Angke Restaurant, and if you didn't order 'udang telor asin', you'll be surprised to find that this place was indeed quite affordable :)

This place was recommended by one of this blog's reader. From the menu, looks like they offer Singaporean hawker cuisine although there's several choices of Malaysian, Hongkong and Indonesian cuisine, so we ordered : 1 "mie pok" (flat egg noodle topped with minced meat and black mushroom) 13K and 1 "kwetiau siram telor" 12K. My "mie pok" came with a bowl of seaweed soup (love it so much). I don't really like the noodle since I think its a bit soggy, the "kwetiaw siram" was not bad, Overall the meal was good but most of all the price is really reasonable, I think we'll be back to try some other delicacies like : laksa bihun Singapore & fish cake :)

Two days ago we had dinner with several friends at a newly opened restaurant located at Lokasari Complex, Mangga Besar. There's no obvious signboard in front of the restaurant (there's an almost similar restaurant called 'wan li xiang' something just 2 doors away). From the name 'Suki' we knew that this place served suki/hot pot, but they also served Sichuan cuisine (a style of Chinese cuisine originating in Sichuan Province of southwestern China which has an international reputation for being hot and numbing (麻辣), because of the common ingredient : Sichuan peppercorn) There are over 100 choices of fish, chicken, duck, pork, beef, mutton, bird, cooked in Sichuan style. We started by ordering 2 portion of dimsum 15K with Chinese Tea 4K while waiting for our friends to arrive. The meal came accompanied by a bowl of freshly made chilli oil for dipping (not really hot). Then our friends arrived and we start ordering, since none of us can speak "Mandarin" properly, we choose the food using sign languages (pointing at the pictures of food) :P And we ordered : 2 prawn herbal soup cooked in bamboo at 68K each, 2 Keong Macan (their specialty) 68K each, Pork parts cooked in special sauce 42K, Spicy Frog 45K, Steamed "ikan kerapu" 158.4K, Kung Pao Chicken 48K, hot & spicy beef 42K, duck soup 55K. All of the meal were delicious (if you like hot and spicy meal) and we really have a good time trying to pick out the "keong macan", plus several glass of sangria and red wine and chocolate from chocolat factory & royce & pisgor kalimantan from sari rasa, Good friend & good food, it was a heavenly dinner :)

[CLOSED] Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe
Posted by jeny at 7:00 PM
Last week I was meeting SC at Mall Taman Anggrek, he took me to this new restaurant located beside 'Tawan'. Decorated in a warm ambience and red couch, it was quite nice and the menu was quite interesting. from the menu looks like their specialty is crab bihon (around 90K) - it was to expensive for us so we decided to order some thing else. So we ordered "minced pork cheese baked rice" 25.5K, "fish hor fun" 24.5K, Teh "0" without sugar 5.5K, and mineral water 8.5K (I noticed the drink is quite expensive). In my opinion the taste of the food is just so so.. the minced pork cheese baked rice tasted weird, I don't really get the idea of mixing Chinese style sweet minced pork with cheese, and the horfun was a bit oily. after the meal we still feel thirsty so we decided to order the "red bean snow ice" 18.5K :)

Nan Xiang @ Mall Taman Anggrek

Several weeks ago, we had late lunch at NanXiang restaurant located at the top floor of Mall Taman Anggrek. Since I was so hungry, we didn't order their specialty (xiao long bao), but ordered 1 portion of "Mapo Tofu" 38K and 1 portion of "fried prawn in salted egg yolk" 45K with several bowl of rice. In my opinion the dish was not bad at all, the mapo tofu, although not as spicy as I thought, is still acceptable lah, and the fried prawn was delicious and it came in a very reasonable price. I think this place's price is cheaper than nanxiang at lagoon tower or Senayan City.

Nelayan
Posted by jeny at 5:57 PM
One of the restaurant we visited when we're in Medan is Nelayan, Apparently this is quite large Chinese restaurant chain in Medan, they have several restaurant located strategically at shopping centers. The one we visited was located at Sun Plaza. when we arrived, around 2PM the place was still very crowded, we have to queue for a while to get a table, as soon as we were seated, their waiter came with a tray of dimsum selection and asked us to pick. We didn't even have time to read all the menu listed in the paper :( so we picked : lumpia udang saus jamur 8.5K, kaki ayam saus tiram 8.5K, leng hong kien 12K, soup tim ayam obat 14K, sayap ayam panggang 12K, kepiting lunak mentega 21K, keladi special (u kok) 8.5K, ha kaou udang 12K, lumpia ayam sayur hitam (I guess what they mean is nori) 8.5K, bakso kepiting kulit tahu 12K and nasi tim ayam dalam bambu 11K. Overall the meal was only so so (some of the item we ordered are cold already, some taste weird), but I like the chicken rice cooked in bamboo and the chicken herbal soup. Other than that I really don't like their service style, kind of push you to pick the food as soon as possible and leave quickly because they have other customer waiting :( that's not what I had in mind if I want to eat dimsum.

A night at Mangga Besar
Posted by jeny at 10:59 PM
Mangga Besar street at night are full with all range of food you can imagine, from street vendor that offering a lot of chinese food (Medanese) delicacies to sea food restaurant, sichuan food, and even some extreme food like snake satay/soup/blood, "biawak", monket meat - can be easily found in here. But that night we decided not to go with the extreme line, but just have some easy meal like "kwetiau akang", "a kiaw baso", and "roti canai"

We had another hotpot several weeks ago at Tayang Suki restaurant located at Pluit. Actually there were several hotpot restaurant along this road that always had a lots of customer (knew it by the number of cars park outside the restaurant and cause the traffic along this road became very slow during dinner time). It was already passed the dinner time when we arrive, we get a table easily and ordered : 2 types of soup : tomyam & Chinese herbal soup (23.8K). after that we shops for the ingredient to put into the pot : pork wonton 12.8K, pork intestines (tito) 14.8K, ox tongue 16.8K, fish meatball with nori 12.8K, and 1 pack of ginseng leaves 5.8K. after that we went back to our seat at watching the friendly waiter prepare our meal, she put all the ingredients inside the pot and after several minutes put it into our bowl. overall it was a nice & warming dinner, plus a good service & reasonable price :)

Golden Century Seafood Village

Last year we ended our dimsum marathon at a place called : "Golden Century Seafood Village" located at SCBD (the same are with Club Store). When we arrived around noon, the restaurant already full with lots of family chatting while having their dimsum. This place served all you can eat HALAL dimsum for only 50K, and charged only 5K for chinese tea. the restaurant ambience it self was not very impressing, the red wall combined with greenish light, + several fish swimming sadly in the aquarium at the corner. overal it makes me feel that I was having dimsum underwater :P

izikayaLast week when I wrote about Chonging Hotpot, there were several comments suggesting me to try a restaurant called "Izakaya" at Pesanggrahan road. I've already passed this restaurant several times but not interested to try it because the place was so deserted and the name "Izakaya" supposed to mean "Japanese drinking place which also serve food", but instead of serving Japanese food, they offered Chinese food & dimsum. However, those comments made me reconsider and eventually decided to give it a try.

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice
Posted by jeny at 10:24 PM
It was raining the whole day when I started my adventure to find Maxwell food centre, accompanied by chan's street directory I started to go to Ikea at alexandra road first and then headed to maxwell road, it was quite a big food court full with all tempting & mouth watering stall that calling me to sit there, but I made up my mind that I must find this place, so after wondering trough all the stall I finally found it at the back of the foodcourt. it was already passed the lunch time so there's no queue at all, I ordered the big portion $3 of their chicken rice & sat. Turned out this was the best chicken rice i ever had in my whole life, the rice was fragrant and cooked using a long grain rice, not oily at all, and the steamed chicken was cooked to perfection perfection, the meat's color was clean, smooth and so tender i could cry when I was chewing it (my friend said I decribed the chicken rice just like I describe a beautiful women) :P no wonder this place got the number one best chicken rice in Singapore from makansutra, much much better than loykee chicken rice

I knew this place from makansutra, and I went to search for it with zink, luckily we found it at last around lunch time, there's a long queue in front of this stall, so we joined the queue and after about 15 minutes, I sat in the table facing my first "bhak chor mee" (mushroom minced pork noodle) $3, the noodle is served with a soup ( a combination of soy sauce, black vinegar, chili, pork oil) and topped with : minced meat (pork), sliced mushrooms (hioko), celery etc. resulting quite oily but very tasty & delicious soup. :)

ChongQing Hot Pot

Last week, I met Flona from NasiUduk, and she took us to this restaurant for dinner. This place speciality was ChongQing style hot pot (anyone know where this kind of hotpot can be found in Indonesia?). Decorated in modern Chinese interior, with several Chinese opera mask pasted on the wall. since its a buffet dinner, we can choose from a big list of dish (seafood, pork, chicken, mushroom, vegetables) to put into the soup, we choose 2 kind of soup base (Ma-La Tang and Faithful Chicken Soup), edamame was served as appetizer, an we also got several sellection of Dian Xin such as "Xiao Long Tang Bao", "fried buns" etc. ( I didn't know all the 'dian xin' name :P ) and ice cream of the day for dessert. Overall it was a wonderfull experience, the 'Ma La Tang' was so delicious, tasty and hot. but I still wish it was hotter than that. They also have 4 types of dipping sauces, btw they also served the most delicious tea : "Ba Bao Cha" (eight treasure tonic tea). Thx alot ya Flo *hugs*

This place was one of my favorite place in town whenever I want good food, good service, spectacular view in an affordable price. I used to visit this place in 2003/4 with friends (well actually I dragged them there for dimsum, lunch or dinner :P ). their "tahu nenek moyang" (75K) was so delicious but that that was was a bit pricey. 2 weeks ago when we went there for dimsum (they offer 30% discount on food & beverages from 4-17 Dec) and ended up ordered all sort of dimsum & dessert. :)

So we went to muara karang, the restaurant was located next to a bridal salon own by a famous designer (forgot his name :p ). there's two type "hing hwa" noodle here : "mie heng hwa" and "mie heng hwa goreng", determined to tasted it we ordered both. In my opinion both of it tasted more delicious that the one at Sunter, the broth tasted more savory and the inggredient was vary : prawn, pork, mushroom, fish & chicken meatball and 'kacang goreng' sprinkled on top. too bad they didn't put fried seaweed on top of the noodle. when we asked them they said not many people favor it so they didn't put it in the noodle but we can asked for it if we want.

We tried this restaurant several weeks ago after we tried Nan Xiang, this restaurant served mostly dumpling, we noticed that there's a new menu available which is : xiao long bao with crab filling 40K and with pork filling 30K. we decided to ordered the second one along with 1 portion of coriander pork dumpling (5pcs) 10K and "chicken-fish-shrimp" 3 in 1 dumpling 12.5K (5pcs). to tell the truth, compared with other's places xiao long bao, their's tasted so so, although I have to admit it came in a generous portion (10 pieces for only 30K). Other than that their dumpling was still delicious, didn't really like the skin texture though. Other than various type of dumpling, they also served Shanghai stir-fry, several type of cold dishes, vegetarian selection, Shanghai hot pot, La mian, soups and dessert. I have tried some in the past and all of it were delicious :)

2 weeks ago, We visited this restaurant at La Piazza Kelapa Gading. Loy Kee is originally from Singapore and claimed to be the best chicken rice restaurant. The place was very crowded when we arrived, so we decided to hang out at Tea Gallery first and returned an hour later. We ordered: "friendly plate" (for 2 person) 40K, which consists of 2 bowls of hainanese chicken rice, a plate of hainanese and roasted chicken, stir-fried vegetables and 2 bowl of clear soup. The hainanese chicken rice was quite different from what I had tasted before. It used long grain rice, so the resulting chicken rice was not sticky or oily at all. The chicken was only so so, but the worst part was the service. Our drinks didn't arrive until we almost finished our meal, and we had to ask several times for our tea and chilly sauce.

We ordered Mie HingHwa (small) 20K and Kwe Tiau Hing Hwa (20K). the meal came in quite a big bowl full with handmade noodle with chicken, prawn, mushroom, vegetables and dried seaweed on top of the meal. Overall the meal was good although not too tasty. Thanks ya Ling for the recommendation.

Surprisingly the noodle & nasi goreng was so delicious. The crab was generous. Especially my fried rice, the fried rice it self tasted so delicious, and I can't help thinking that this was too good to be Halal. and after we questioned the owner, my guess was right. Canton Bay PS
Posted by jeny at 5:23 PM

Last week, I planned to have lunch at Ratu Plaza foodcourt, but the place have been turned into a dvd center, so we went to Plaza Senayan instead. when we entered the mall, we saw a sign that "Canton Bay" are opening there, and they have "buy 1 get 1 free" promo on noodles, so decided to have lunch there. We ordered our fav : "roast duck noodle" 26K with a pot of Oolong tea. Btw unlike MTA's Canton Bay, all of the meal here are Halal.

Cilantro Tea House

Last weekend was a long long weekend (thx to harpitnas), My friend told me that she saw an advert in newspaper that Cilantro PIM2 have a AYCE (all you can eat) Dimsum for only 29K++, so we decided to give it a try.

I never been to Cilantro PIM2 before, and to me the place was less cozy than the one in wisma BNI 46. Quite confusing with the decoration with lots of manga painting on the wall & menus, there's 2 menus : one for list of dimsum selection, and one book labeled "peaches tea house".

Noodle Cafe
Posted by jeny at 9:37 AM
Last week I visited "Noodle Cafe" at MTA for dinner, this was my second visit. My first visit in 2005 was not very impressing, but I decided to gave it a second try. The restaurant was not very full although its dinner time, I decided to order "Egg Noodle with Shrimp Wonton & Crab Meat" 21.5K and "Longan Ice" 12.5K. The service was improved compared to the last time i was there, but not the meal. I didn't quite like my noodle, the crab meat had no taste ( a little bit fishy), the soup was too savored (kelewat gurih euy, gw ga mau mati kegurihan) and the vegetable wasn't very fresh. I guess this was just another fancy looking cafe.

[CLOSED] Asia Kitchen
Posted by jeny at 7:09 PM
I had dimsum last week at Asia Kitchen located at Tanjung Duren. I already visited this restaurant several times since they got a very interesting promo : "Hongkong Dimsum for only 4.9K/item". the varieties of the dimsum was not very much. its divided between steam dumpling and fried dumpling. I especially like the steamed dumpling. the fried ones tasted to oily in my mouth. I usually ordered siomay, hakaw (shrimp dumpling), pangsit wansui, lumpia saos tiram, plus a bowl of chicken congee.

Hay Thien
Posted by jeny at 10:30 AM
Last weekend following Lola recommendation, we had dinner at "Hay Thien" Puri Indah. The place was very crowded which I guess its a good sign. Hay Thien offering various kind of seafood and meat with 3 ways of serving : rebus (steamboat), panggang (grill) & hotplate. Since we are still in diet and "ngirit" mode, we ordered steamboat with ikan kakap 1/2 portion 8K , hati ayam 1/2 portion 6K, baso ikan 1/2 portion 8K, kerang kipas import 1/2 portion 12K, with vegetables.. they use chicken broth as soup base, there's a servant help us preparing the food, so we only sit and watch her preparing the meal. after cooked the meat in the hotpot for a while, she place it in the place filled with minyak wijen. and we ate it with a bowl of rice 3.5K, soy & chili sauce and acar 1.5K. the taste was really delicious, not bad... this place got a 3G from me : Good food, Good service, and Good price.. thx ya Lol... :)

[CLOSED] Lao Ta
Posted by jeny at 7:42 AM
Last weekend on our way to Fuji for lunch at Mega Mall Pluit, I passed a new restaurant in front of Fuji called "Lao Ta : Bubur Lao Ta & Seafood Specialist ala Hongkong", on the glass wall there are some text like: "Now Opening : Disc 20% promotional only" and "makan bubur & seafood Laota : rasanya seperti makan di hongkong: kepiting, udang, ikan kodok - semua hidup". mmm interesting... I make up my mind to visit this place tonight for dinner.

So that night we went back to Mega Mall and go straight to Laota, we ordered : Bubur Kepiting (crab poriddge) 32K and Po Cay Telor Asin 30K. the porridge was very delicious : they put the pieces of the crab inside the porridge, with crab eggs all around the porridge and fried peanut on top of it. I definitely will be back :)

Its almost midnight when we finished watch "Memoirs of a Geisha" at Djakarta Theater, and we feel a "little" hungry, so we headed to Kota. At first we went to "Brilliant restaurant" that served porridge from 10PM to 02AM, but they almost run out of porridge, then we switched to Agoan's porridge at Pecenongan, but already close. then I remembered that "Imperial Chef" restaurant open for 24 hours so we went there. :)

Located in the same building with Pizza Hut, Sushi Nobu, Jesselyn Cake, Imperial Chef still have a lot of guest sitting & eating there at 1AM. we waited for a while when they prepare our table, then we start to order : Mixed Pork Porridge (Bubur Babi Campur) 28K, Steam Prawn Rice Noodle Rolls (Tim Udang Cheong Fan) (13.8K), Talas Goreng Istimewa (10.8K), Fried Chinese Bun (Mantau Goreng) 8.8K, Shanghai-style Dumpling (Tim Xiao Long Bao) 12.8K, Pork Noodle (Mie Babi Tangan Depan) 28K, Jellyfish with pork(Ubur-ubur dengan Babi Sengkel) 38K and Chinese Tea 5K. mmmm not bad :) we left the place with a sleepy eyes & round belly :P

We visited Canton Bay again last Monday, we always like this place although its very crowded, but the food was quite delicious and not very very expensive :P.They served various Chinese cuisine : noodle, fried noodle & rice, BBQ, seafood, meat/poultry, sapo & bean-curd, vegetable, soup and dessert.

Canton Bay

That night we ordered a set menu for eight which consist of : "canton bean curd with dried scallop sauce" (27.5K), "honey bean with scallop and lince mushroom" (38K), "prawn with mayonnaise" (36K), "deep fried nila fish (live) with thai sauce" (33K), "stir fried frog with basil leaf" (24K) & "aromatic crispy duck" (148K).

The aromatic crispy duck was served with mandarin crepe, shredded cucumber, spring onion, celery and hoisin sauce. The duck meat and skin was shredded from its bones, then we had to wrap the duck meat, cucumber, onion and celery in the crepes and dipped it in the hoisin sauce, mmm delicious.. :)

Noodle Tasting
Posted by jeny at 2:07 PM
We visited 3 different chinese restaurant at MTA last week and tried 3 kind of noodle they served. The first restaurant was "Noodle Cafe" - very crowded, we ordered "egg noodle with wonton & roast duck" (21.5K) , have to waited for half an hour just to know they put the wrong order on our table :( the food taste was not very special, not recommended lah :(

Then we decided to go down and visited "Canton Bay" and ordered "Dry Noodle with Lo Duck and Lo Pork" (24K), it tasted much better than the first one, good service too :).

After that we noticed that there is a new restaurant opening called "Huang Ting", operated under the same management with "The Duck King" and "Imperial Chef", so we decided to tried it next time we go to MTA, last night we came there and ordered "Noodle Soup with Shui Jiau Wonton"(26K). not bad - for that price, the noodle texture was perfect.. mmm after that we ordered "Xiao Long Bao"(16.8K).. delicious... i'll be back hehehe :),

I visited Crystal Jade Kitchen at Plaza Indonesia EX (Entertainment X'nter) with SC last Friday. The restaurant was in a same management with "Cristal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao", but with a more reasonable price i guess.

At first I didn't planned to order anything for myself because I had just eaten a very big course at Hard Rock Cafe, but when I tasted his Noodle Dry with Roast Duck (33K) - I changed my mind. I ordered a plate of Plain Noodle Dry with vegetable (13K), its the noodle that i want :) a thin noodle with a perfect taste mmmm still remember the taste of the noodle combined with its sauce. Bon Apetit :)

There is a new restaurant opening in Mall Taman Anggrek this week, it was called "Canton Bay : noodles place & BBQ", when we passed that place last night they said they had a special promo for "buy 1 noodle and get 1 noodle free", hehehe so we decided to try it. The restaurant interior was nothing special, designed in minimalist concept with red accent.

That night we choose "Lo Duck & Lo Pork Noodle"(24K), "Roast Pork Noodle"(free), Ocha(5K) and Guava Juice (9K). In my opinion the food was simply delicious, Good Food, Good Service & Good Price.... hehehe can't wait to go back there to try another menu :)

Duck Bihon
Posted by jeny at 9:45 AM

It's been so long since I last eat Duck Bihon (Rice Vermicelli serve with steam duck and clear soup), everywhere I go I always look for this kind of food. One of my favorite bihun bebek was back at my home town, but last night I had an opportunity to tried bihon bebek at Mangga Besar. In my oppinion the taste was not very special, different from what I was looking for.. not using chinese herbs in its ingredients, but OK lah... can't wait to tried Bihun Bebek Kumango at Medan - North Sumatra this weekend. :)

[CLOSED] Shilin
Posted by jeny at 2:05 PM

Last friday, we had lunch at Shilin restaurant. From the restaurant name you can know that this restaurant was specialized in Taiwanese Cuisine. The name "Shilin" was taken from the famous Shilin night market in Taiwan.

The restaurant interior wasn't very special, after seated we ordered "Taiwanese Chicken Fried Vermicelli" and "Pineapple Chicken Fried Rice". All the food comes with a small bowl of chicken broth soup and sugar cane juice. In my oppinion the food was lack of salt, a a little bit tasteless but worth to try lah :) Bon Apetit.

[CLOSED] The Duck King
Posted by jeny at 5:54 PM
I visited "The Duck King" restaurant with some friends last friday. The Restaurant was located at Semanggi Plaza 3rd floor. From the outside, we can see some duck hanging inside the glass panel, what a cool place to eat I thought, but surprisingly, the interior inside turn out very cozy, modern & light. The warming atmosphere spread out from the people chatting while having their dinner.

From what I heard the peking duck here is said to be the finest in town, so we ordered half Peking Duck, 2 portion of Roasted Duck with Hainamnese rice, Hakau, & Jasmine Tea. When it came, the duck was wrap in Mandarin Crepes accompanied with hoisin sauce, while the meat was cooked in black pepper sauce, and it tasted deliciously, the crispy texture of the duck skin combined with the coldness of the crepes and hoisin sauce : perfect. The service was quite good too... can't wait to be back here again soon. Bon Appetit :)
