Our next stop was the newest addition to Balinese Cuisine in Kelapa Gading Boulevard called Depot Murni (also originated from Surabaya). They serve nasi Babi Guling Gianyar (Istimewa 28K, Biasa 25K), Iga Bakar (Saus Murni 34K, Saus teriyaki 39K), Sam Sam Goreng 20K, Nasi Ayam Betutu (Komplit 22K - Biasa 20K), Nasi Ayam Tabanan 22K, Sate kelapa 20K, Sate Plecing 15K 5pcs, Sate Pusut 15K for 5pcs, They even had Rawon on their menu :) Since we're already quite full, we only ordered Nasi Babi Guling Gianyar, sate pusut & usus goreng to share. Overall the dishes taste & presentation were only so so, nothing different or special compared with what we already had before.

Lunch menu: soto iga babi 7.5K, nasi ayam plecing Bali 14K, sate samcan 12K. Dinner menu: nasi Ken Ken Bigul Bali Super 22K, Nasi Ayam Betutu Bali 14K, Babi Guling 35K. The place was still crowded even though it was well past lunch time.

Warung Tengil

Our next stop was Warung Tengil. The last time we're here, we weren't impressed with what they offered. But this time, we decided to give it another try. The place was surely not as crowded as before and there has been changes in the menu since our last visit. We elected for larger tables on the second floor. While waiting for others to arrive we ordered: rujak bawel 10K. It tasted quite delicious, but it wasn't anything near Balinese's rujak kuah pindang. For lunch, we ordered nasi babi guling + soup 22K, nasi babi bambu bakar 22K. sate babi 3.5K/pcs to share. In my opinion, the dishes still tasted the same and just as average. Furthermore, the presentation was just as minimal as the taste. :(

Sapi Bali

Last month we went to Kelapa Gading with several friends to try Balinese restaurants that have sprung up in the area. We arrived quite early and our first stop is a place called Sapi Bali, a Balinese halal restaurant that serves Sate Sapi (beef satay cooked in Balinese spices), Ayam Betutu, Iga Bakar, Urutan (Balinese sausage), Ayam Kecombrang, lawar kacang.

There's a new Balinese restaurant in Pluit that specializes in Ayam Betutu Khas Gilimanuk. I was so excited and we decided to try it. The place was crowded when we arrived. The airconditioned dining room for non-smokers is full, so we had to sit outside. The restaurant's main courses are ayam betutu Gilimanuk (whole 70K, half 38K, quarter 20K), ayam betutu goreng (whole 72K, half 39K, quarter 21K), bebek betutu, bebek betutu bengil goreng. The rest are, lawar ayam campur gorengan 15K, ares bebek 8K, sate lilit ayam @3.5K, nasi campur ibu Made Wardani 25K, sayur pelecing 5K & sambal matah 5K. We decided to order : "Nasi Campur Ibu Made Wardani" which cover pretty much a little bit of everything, and a quarter of ayam betutu Gilimanuk and sate lilit. Overall the meal was OK, quite spicy, although their service was quite slow.

Two weeks ago, we went for a short trip to Cirebon with several friends, but before that we had lunch first at Pondok Sekarbela. The restaurant is serving traditional Lombok dishes such as Ayam Pelecing, ayam Seraten, Pelecing Kangkung, Beberuk etc.. From the menu we choose : Ayam Seraten (less spicy that ayam pelecing) 14K, Ayam Pelecing 14K, Ikan Nila Seraten 45K, Ikan Gurame Pelecing 45K, Sate Pusut, Pelecing Kangkung, Kime-kime daging sapi 14K, beberuk 8K. The restaurant was not so full at lunch time but we still have to wait for a while for our orders to come. Overall, the dishes all tasted spicy as SC complained about it throughout our lunch. Still, I didn't think it was spicy enough (maybe my senses have been ruined from eating too much chili). The satay was quite small and contained more coconut that meat. The price was quite pricey compared to the size, but it was worth a try if you love spicy food.

Le Seminyak
We found a restaurant called Le Seminyak that serves Balinese dishes in Pacific Place Mall. As we're quite fond of Balinese cuisine, we decided to try it. The place is spacious, with high ceilings and nicely decorated. We ordered their Nasi Campur Bali (steamed rice topped with a seasonal mix of vegetables, meats, satay and sambal) 32.8K and Cram Cam (Balinese traditional chicken soup) 22.8K. In my opinion, the dish was not as good as the decoration. It was decent, but they still need a lot of improvements before they can be compared with the "real thing" :(

Last month we had a one day trip to Bandung to visit a friend who recently gave birth to a very cute baby girl. We started late morning from Jakarta & arrived there around lunch time, so we decided to have lunch first at a Balinese restaurant called Lalah. The place was easy to find and we ordered Ayam Betutu Original Lalah (whole chicken) 49K, Sate Lilit Ikan (5 sticks) 12K, tum (pepes) ati ampela 4K, lawar 8K, urap kalas 8K, plecing lombok 8K. Overall the meal was not bad, although not very authentic and my friend complained that their sambel matah was not hot enough. Maybe that's because it was already adjusted to local taste. :)

Warung TengilToday we tried this new restaurant called Warung Tengil at Kelapa Gading that serves Balinese suckling pig. I was so excited the first time I heard about this place because Balinese suckling pig is hard to find in Jakarta. the place was quite easy to find, not far from the big roundabout, and they put up a big smiling pink pig sign that is hard to miss. The interior makes us forgot that we're actually sitting in a shophouse. Decorated in warong style, with bamboo structures, exposed bricks wall, eccentric chandeliers, lots of paintings & brick flooring. I kind of like this place. :)

Last Sunday, one day before "nyepi" (Hindu new year), SC & I were hunting for Balinese food around West Jakarta. We once heard that there's a Pura located at Jelambar, In my mind whenever there's a Pura, there must be a Balinese food served :P We found this very humble "warung" next to the "pura" called "Putu Puja" owned by Mrs. Gusti Putu Puja that open only every sunday morning from 9AM. The only menu available there is "nasi campus khas Bali" 15K. In my opinion this is the most delicious Balinese "Nasi Campur" I had ever tasted in Jakarta. :)

On our way back from Uluwatu, we stopped by Menega Cafe at Jimbaran beach for dinner. This place was the target for Bali bombing II. I love this place so much. We had delicious dinner under the skies and we can also feel the warm sand on our feet. We ordered : 0.8kg grouper fish 40K and 0.65kg Crab 39K grilled in jimbaran style and orange juices 8K. The meal came with a plate of delicious plecing kangkung. The seafood was so delicious with 3 types of chili sauce for dipping.

Since we stayed at Legian - Kuta, we had a chance to try so many restaurant in here, and I decided to make a summary of what we have here. Some of it was international cuisine : greek/Turkish at Kebab Palace, Italian cuisine at Kuta Puri Restaurant. We also found Balinese buffet at glory restaurant. Most of the night we just wandered around Kuta traditional market where there's a lot cheap food choices : nasi pedes (java), bakmi ayam, soto ceker, several nasi lawar babi seller, nasi jenggo. All of it were very cheap (from 2K - 7K).

One of my "die die must try" list in Bali was to taste "Babi Guling Bu Oka" (Balinese suckling pig). So one day we drove to Ubud early in the morning. arriving at Ubud around 10AM, the place haven't opened yet, so we took a walk to Ubud Art Market and Ubud Palace. 15 minutes to 11 we're back at the restaurant and take a seat inside. we ordered 2 portion of "nasi + babi guling (special)" 15K, the meal were so tasty and hot. it was consist of : steamed rice topped with lawar, urutan, meat, pork skin, rambak and off course spicy sambal. the skin was so tender and delicious. we even took 2 portion of "daging babi guling" 15K home.

Tekor was located in front of Double-Six beach, a perfect place to watch sunset. here you can watch people surving, playing volleyball etc. decorated in a hut (warung) style with a view of the ocean, lovely breezes, friendly service & great choice of food (affordable price). Since we just had lunch at "Bundaran Renon", we only ordered drinks with a portion of "Bubur Injin" topped with chocolate ice cream and sat there for hours until sunset :)

We visited "Warung Bundaran Renon" the next day, located near Bundara Renon, it is one of the authentic balinese cuisine restaurant serving "nasi campur" (chicken/pork) with a variation of "babi guling" (Balinese suckling pig) every Monday and Friday. the visitor were mostly the local people. the price were fare (below 20K) it was delicious - the meal was spicy and the soup have a delicious meatball in it, plus they also have "es daluman" (some kind of cing cao), to bad they were run out of it the time we're there. definitely on of the must visit if you were in Bali.

One of our missions in Bali is to try out authentic Balinese cuisine, so the next day we jumped on a bemo and headed to Denpasar. We wanted to try 2 restaurants serving halal version of 'Nasi Campur Bali': "Warung Satria" and "Warung Wardani". Our first stop was Warung Satria. The place was still empty since we arrived early. So we ordered 'Nasi Campur Special' (steamed rice served with shredded chicken in spicy sambal, lawar, balinese spicy egg, plecing kacang panjang, sate lilit ikan, fried prawn, complete with sambal matah) 16K. The meal came in quite a generous portion + a bowl of 'ares' (edible banana stem) soup. It was delicious and the 'sate lilit' (Balinese grilled fish satay) is the best compared to sate lilit from all other places we've tried in Bali.

Last week, I dragged SC for a culinary tour to Bali. After we arrived, we took a short walk around Legian - Kuta and landed at "Made's Warung": one of the more popular places in Bali, serving European, Indonesian, Thai, and Indian dishes. We ordered "Tipat Tjantok" (Balinese gado-gado / blanched vegetables with spicy peanut sauce dressing) 20K and "Rujak Kuah Pindang" (Balinese fruit salad served with fish stock) 15K. Overall not bad lah for a start :)

Last week we got an invitation for birthday dinner held at "Ajengan restaurant". located near melawai / blok M. From the moment we entered this place, I just love it. I like the inner garden in Balinese style, the entrance, foyer & the ambience of this place, so homy & cozy. They served an authentic Balinese Cuisine, and I bet the food will be as good as the place. :)

Nasi Campur Bali

I had "Nasi Campur Bali"/ Balinese mixed rice (steamed rice served with mixture of lawar nangka, tum babi, pork satay, etc) 10K at Pure Cinere courtyard last weekend, I also bought "nasi Jenggo" ( steamed rice served with noodles, fried nuts, shredded shicken and sambal, wrapped in banana leaf). In my oppinion the food was quite authentic, to bad they don't serve "Babi Guling" (a spit-roasted whole pig stuffed with a delicious mix of herbs and spices) when we came. :P
