Bibliotheque

Bibliotheque

From Tokio Joe, we went to Bibliotheque for dessert. It's said to be one of the new hip places in Jakarta and from what I heard, they have a nice concept. Because we arrived without reservation, I'm a bit hopeless that we can get a table. Luckily, it was still early Saturday night, so the place wasn't crowded yet and we can get a table until 9:30PM. Bibliotheque's interior is designed to look like an old british library with parquet flooring, high ceiling, mezzanine floor, high window panel, complete with bookshelves and ladder covering the wall. They've already put on Christmas decoration and Christmas jazz music played in the background, making the ambience warm and comfortable. Even the restroom looked nice :)

Lau's Kopitiam
Posted by jeny at 6:31 PM
Lately, kopi tiam (coffee shop) seems to have become a trend as new stores are opening left and right in the past few months. So we were curious about Lau's Kopitiam which has just opened at Emporium Mall Pluit. They offer a number of light meals, such as cakwe 5K, lumpia goreng 10K, pangsit goreng 10K, telur rebus setengah matang 5K and also heartier menus like sandwiches, mie, kwetiaw & bihun, rice dishes. It was quite crowded when we arrived. Since we've just had lunch with SC's parents, we only ordered regular kaya toast 12K with teh susu (milk tea) 10K. The kaya toast tasted delicious with old style thick bread and kaya/srikaya jam (made from coconut milk, egg and caramelized sugar). The milk tea was good too, although I suspected that they were using Lipton milk tea. :)

Kopi Tiam Oey

Kopi Tiam Oey

Last month, we stopped by this newly opened coffee shop owned by Bondan Winarno called Kopi Tiam Oey located on Sabang road (near Holland Bakery). The exterior and interior of this place is very interesting, designed to resemble old peranakan coffee shops. The interior has a warm ambience and the wall is full of chinese vintage posters. The lamp shades are made from sangkar burung covered with a piece of red cloth. It is beautiful, but to be honest, all the real kopitiam I saw back in my home town/other places looked very bland compared to this place. It's nice to know that Kopi Tiam Oey forbids smoking inside its premise. Only a single table is provided outside for smokers.

I found this charming restaurant by accident a few months ago near Four Seasons Hotel. It grabbed my attention the second I passed by with its high colonial windows reflecting the warmth of the interior inside. So a week later, I decided to have lunch here with several friends. The place was not crowded when I arrived, I easily got a table. The interior design is cozy and charming, with an open kitchen in the middle of the room. There is also an alfresco lounge with cozy couches that looks great for hanging out after work.

Decanter
Posted by jeny at 10:37 AM
Last night, I managed to drag SC to Decanter, a wine house located at Kuningan area. Although we don't drink, I heard that the meal served there is quite good, so I decided to try it. SC has been unwilling to visit Decanter because the place is very smoker friendly. So we tried to arrive early (a little after 6PM) while the place was still empty. I like the design, as it is spacious, very earthy with broken brick floor, paneled wall, wooden table & seat with plants everywhere. The ceiling is designed to resemble a starry sky with hundred of small light bulbs. I love it although SC wondered how much electricity is consumed to light up those bulbs.

Kok Tong
Posted by jeny at 11:45 AM
On our way to Toba Lake, we stopped by a local coffee shop at Siantar city called Kok Tong for a cup of coffee and tea. The place was full of locals having their coffee and smoking, but we had no choice and we choose to sit as far away from the smokers. We ordered a cup of black coffee, milk tea, teh talua (egg tea), half boiled egg and srikaya toast. I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't comment on the coffee, but it seems that my father & brother enjoyed it. They gave each of us a glass of plain water to accompany our drinks. I like my egg tea. It was sweet and savory. The toast was simple but delicious. Kok Tong sells their coffee under the name "bubuk kopi massa Kok Tong". They also have branches in Medan. :)

Kopi Selasar
Posted by jeny at 7:18 AM
We stopped by Selasar Sunaryo that afternoon for coffee & tea. The place is, in fact, an art gallery, but they also have a cafe called Kopi Selasar at their back terrace, complete with a spectacular view of Bandung. They offer a selection of coffee and tea, several snacks and dishes. The atmosphere is much calmer than other cafes around that area. A sign in the cafe asks visitors to read books, chat with friends, or engage in other relaxing activities, except playing chess or cards. A waiter gave us the menu and told us to go straight to the counter if we want to order.

Eskopi
Posted by jeny at 5:50 PM
A coffee-holic friend of ours has just opened his own coffee stall at Terminal 2 Soekarno Hatta International Airport. We decided to try it one day while we're picking up friends. After a bit of a search, we found the place near 3E departure gate (next to Coffee Bean). He named his stall eskopi offering iced coffee with various flavors such as: cappuccino 13K, kahlua 15K, tiramisu 15K, mocha 15K, karamel 15K, coklat mint 16K, pisang coklat 16K, kacang coklat 16K & classic ice coffee 10K. Besides that, they also offered non-coffee beverages such as: es coklat 15K, es coklat mint 16K, es pisang coklat karamel 16K, es sirup mint 16K. We ordered their ice coffee coklat mint 16K. Admittedly, I'm not much of a coffee person, but I quite like this kind of coffee. It tasted light and not too sweet, with the mint flavor adding a bit of a kick. Compared to the major brands of coffeeshops, I prefer this one. The only downside is that we had to go to the airport for a sip. I hope they will open another branch downtown :)

Cimory

After lunch we went to Venus to buy roti unyil and then continued to Puncak. Luckily the road was not as crowded as it usually happens on weekends. We arrived at Cimory restaurant in about half an hour. The place was crowded and quite hard to get a table with good view, so we just sat at available table.

[Relocated] Coffee Tree
Posted by jeny at 10:18 AM
After eating so many Nasi Campur Bali, we decided to find a place to cool our stomach down. We went to the newly relocated Coffee Tree (previously located on Mall Artha Gading). The place are far more spacious than the old one, 2 storey town house, with the second floor dedicated for the smokers. We got a cozy sofa at the ground floor and ordered black coffee 20K, hot kahlua mocha 32K, ice kahlua mocha 35K, irish cream mocha 35K, ice tiramisu latte 39K, tiramisu 29K and ice cream vanilla 15K for dessert. The coffee tasted delicious plus a nice latte art on every cup, and I love their tiramisu, one of the best in town in my opinion. :)

Huize Van Welly

3 weeks ago, we tried this small & stylish cafe inside Glow Store at Plaza Indonesia. It was a branch of the old Kemang stalwart. Although the place is not big, the interior is decorated in classic contemporary style. They have several cakes displayed in the counter, but there's not much to select from the menu. We ordered Du Hammam Tea (green tea, rose, green date and red fruit) 25K++ and from their dessert list we ordered chocolate profiterole (filled with stracciatella ice cream and caramel sauce) 45K++. I like the profiterole very much, with the ice cream containing coarsely ground peanuts. The tea was also good. Pricey, but worth my every rupiahs :D

Coffee Tree
Posted by jeny at 10:37 AM
Last month we visited this small coffee shop located at Artha Gading Mall. We heard that this place was a serious coffee shop selling fresh roast and grind coffee. There were various choices of coffee from : traditional coffee (french pressed, vacuum brew, vietnamese style, black coffee, cafe au lait & kopi susu) to expresso based coffee, but since I'm not really a coffee lover, I only ordered a cup of chai milk tea 25K and Tiramisu 29K. The chai taste OK, although not as strong as i expected, but I surely love the tiramisu (soft, not too sweet, creamy and very aromatic coffee, cmiww), seeing that I only ordered a chai milk tea, the head barista approached us and suggested to brew us a single shot of cappucino to accompany my tiramisu. It was perfect, although I don't know much about coffee, I'm very impressed with this one. We will be back :)

Kedai Teko
Posted by jeny at 11:46 AM
From BumiSangkuriang, we moved to Kedai Teko for a cup of tea. I always like this place, it was so homy, surrounded by trees, i could spend hours here doing nothing :) Since we were still full from what we had at lunch time, we only ordered a pot of chi to share. chi actually is what we knew as Masala Chai (Indian spices tea). The pot came with 2 small cup and a bamboo strainer, when I open the pot I saw various of spices like : cardamon, cloves, cinammon, ginger & star anise at the bottom of the pot, the tea already mixed with milk. After a while we pour the tea and putting the strainer on top of the cup to prevent the inggredients fall to the cup. and the tea taste so delicious, I can tell that this is the most delisious chi I ever tasted :) We still want to go back there some other time to try their Poffertjes, tiramisu & home made ravioli.

Gongfu Cha With Siang Ming Tea
Posted by jeny at 11:48 AM
Last Weekend we attended a "Gongfu Cha Ceremony" at Siang Ming Tea Shop. Gongfu Cha Ceremony is one of several kind "tea ceremony culture" from Taiwan. It is a way of preparing tea skillfully to produce and share a satisfying cup of tea. Its different from the Chanoyu tea ceremony from Japan, it was more relaxed, encouraging all participants to speak freely with each other throughout.

Before we began. we ate some jajanan pasar ( traditional sweet cakes ) because some tea could not be taken with empty stomach. Then we gathered around the tea master, watching she began the ritual to brew a good tea : boiling fresh water in the brewing pot, rinse the teapot & cups by pouring hot water on it, adding the tea leaves & pour the boiled water to the tea cup and the transfered it to the serving cups. We tried so many kind of tea (more than 6) : Cinnamon Oolong (black dragon tea), Long Jing (dragon well green tea), Lychee Black Tea, Pu erh (fermented black tea), Bi Luo Chun (Green Snail Spring Tea), & my fav Ku Ding Cha (a very bitter green tea with an underlying sweet taste. The bitter taste wears off after the first sip followed by a pleasant sweet undertone).

Bakoel Koffie
Posted by jeny at 5:09 PM

Bakoel KoffieTired of hangout at Starbuck / Coffee Bean, Last weekend with a couple of friends we headed to "Bakoel Koffie" Cikini. From what I heard Bakoel Koffie serves a various coffee provided by good quality beans taken from Indonesia’s plantations in Sumatra, Sulawesi, Timor, Java and Bali.

I'm not a big fan of coffee so I can't tell much about the coffee quality here, but I guess it was OK lah, not bad judging from all the seat in this place mostly occupied :P The place was decorated in a warm nostalgic atmosphere, being inside the cafe just like seeing old movies, here and there alot off people chatting. and since I can't stand smoke we choose to sit at the non smoking section. I accidentally meeting Feby there, and had quite a good time there drinking Coffee Mocca.
