Mangkok Ayam

From Tizi, we moved to Setiabudhi Supermarket, which is also known as supermarket bule because they sell mostly imported goods. We're planning to have dinner later at some place around Ciumbuleuit. After wandering for a while, I spotted a unique place next to Periplus books store. It is a small kiosk called Mangkok Ayam (chicken bowl). The interior is warm, dominated with wood, and there are chickens all over the place, from the dinnerware to the wallpaper & even printed on the lighting. I'm in love with this place instantly.

This place is one of SC's favorite place. Located at Taman Palem Lestari - West Jakarta, served Jambinese noodle. they served 2 types of noodle : tamie kecil and tamie lebar in various size (regular, regular with double topping, big, big with double topping & with soup), they also served kwetiau & bihun. We usually only ordered the regular portion (11K) plus one bowl of pangsit ikan (15K), the noodle came with a bowl of broth soup (fish & meat). What make this noodle special is we can add several condiment to the noodle and soup to enhanced the taste. I usually mixed it with a little black vinegar, fish sauce, chilli sauce, and chilli slices. and it tasted so delicious, but some times too much chilli makes my stomach hot all day long. :p

Last week, SC drag me to tried Bihun Bebek 75 located at Pluit Sakti Raya, we heard that this place served 'duck beehon' with soup made from chinese herbs. So although we're still full from previous lunch at dapur umum & ragusa, we entered and ordered a portion of bihun bebek, the meal came with a bowl of beehon topped with steam duck slices, spring onnion & cilantro, the soup was put in separate bowl. I tried the soup first, since the soup smells so good, the soup itself was really delicious. next I tried to mixed the soup with the duck beehon, the meal was delicious, but the soup became a bit salty :)

Last weekend I craved for Bakmi Keriting Siantar. A lot of noodle stalls claim that they sell this kind of noodle, but finding an authentic (and tasty) one is quite difficult. After asking a friend about this, SC took me to a restaurant at Muara Karang called "Bakmi Keriting Siantar 19" (still in the Muara Karang traditional market area) and we had a bowl of Bakmi Keriting Siantar 12K and Bihun Kari. It was very delicious. The minced meat was juicy & generous, the wonton was also not bad. I think we will be back again this weekend for more :)

Last Friday, we're planning to have dimsum with some friends at Ah Yat, but when we arrive at the Golden Boutique Hotel around lunch time, it was filled with people, and the waiter outside the restaurant informed us that the Dimsum menus were already sold out. We decided to go to ITC Mangga Dua and have our lunch there instead. Since it was 2 days before Eid-ul Fitri, some of the eateries there were closed. Fortunately, we found a place called Bihun Bebek Beijing that was still open. We got a table and started to eat everything put in front of us as we were very hungry. There were bakso ikan & talas goreng, 4 packs of tape singkong @3K, 6 portions of bihun bebek @26K, 2 portions of nasi kari, 1 roti cane + kari kambing 20K, 2 portions of rujak @15K, 10 glasses of liang teh. Overall, the meal was delicious, but we were quite shocked when we paid as it was quite pricey. I don't know whether this was because the coming Eid-ul Fitri made the raw materials expensive or because this place does have a higher price tags.

Lately, I often find myself visiting this place. It is located on Jl. Sunda (next to ATL Hayam Wuruk & Bakmi Gajah Mada). When I first heard about this place, I was thinking of a place with chinese interiors, but I was surprised when I entered the building. It is chic & cool, bit white with minimalist design. It has murals painted on the wall, white & pink furniture and high ceiling. I instantly fell in love with the decor. (plus they have a fast & free wifi, and let us sit there for hours )

This place was recommended by one of this blog's reader. From the menu, looks like they offer Singaporean hawker cuisine although there's several choices of Malaysian, Hongkong and Indonesian cuisine, so we ordered : 1 "mie pok" (flat egg noodle topped with minced meat and black mushroom) 13K and 1 "kwetiau siram telor" 12K. My "mie pok" came with a bowl of seaweed soup (love it so much). I don't really like the noodle since I think its a bit soggy, the "kwetiaw siram" was not bad, Overall the meal was good but most of all the price is really reasonable, I think we'll be back to try some other delicacies like : laksa bihun Singapore & fish cake :)

We had "Bakmi Bintang Gading" for dinner last week, its a famous meat noodle from Makasar (the capital of south Sulawesi/Celebes), the specialty here is Mie/Bihun Pangsit (not Halal), sop konro, sup buntut but besides that they also had several choices of Chinese food like : mie/bihun canton, hokkian, nasi hainam, nasi capcay, nyuk nyan. Several choices of nasi goreng : nasi goreng Ujung Pandang, Jakarta & Kepiting. Some beverages choices like : es palubutung, es kacang merah, es kelapa pandan etc. In my opinion the noodle was only so so, not that special. I think I still prefer 'Mie Lebar Bangka' than this one :)

Last week I was meeting SC at Mall Taman Anggrek, he took me to this new restaurant located beside 'Tawan'. Decorated in a warm ambience and red couch, it was quite nice and the menu was quite interesting. from the menu looks like their specialty is crab bihon (around 90K) - it was to expensive for us so we decided to order some thing else. So we ordered "minced pork cheese baked rice" 25.5K, "fish hor fun" 24.5K, Teh "0" without sugar 5.5K, and mineral water 8.5K (I noticed the drink is quite expensive). In my opinion the taste of the food is just so so.. the minced pork cheese baked rice tasted weird, I don't really get the idea of mixing Chinese style sweet minced pork with cheese, and the horfun was a bit oily. after the meal we still feel thirsty so we decided to order the "red bean snow ice" 18.5K :)

Several weeks ago, we had late lunch at NanXiang restaurant located at the top floor of Mall Taman Anggrek. Since I was so hungry, we didn't order their specialty (xiao long bao), but ordered 1 portion of "Mapo Tofu" 38K and 1 portion of "fried prawn in salted egg yolk" 45K with several bowl of rice. In my opinion the dish was not bad at all, the mapo tofu, although not as spicy as I thought, is still acceptable lah, and the fried prawn was delicious and it came in a very reasonable price. I think this place's price is cheaper than nanxiang at lagoon tower or Senayan City.

Last month we went with JalanSutra in "Tour Keju Gouda van Soekaboemi" located at Bukit Baros - Sukabumi. after that we were given some time to explore the town. While the others are going to the market, we were heading to RA Hakim street to try the famous "mie cinco". The banner outside the place was quite misleading: "Mie Ayam Cinco", when we order 4 bowl of "mie lebar", we were asked for what we would like for the topping : chicken or roast pork (we choose roast pork). The noodle came in quite a big portion and very generous roast pork on top of it. Try mix it with the hot chili sauce, it tasted so delicious. we bought 2 more portion back to the bus, but the noodle became quite sticky when its cold, but still taste delicious :)

bhak chor mee

I knew this place from makansutra, and I went to search for it with zink, luckily we found it at last around lunch time, there's a long queue in front of this stall, so we joined the queue and after about 15 minutes, I sat in the table facing my first "bhak chor mee" (mushroom minced pork noodle) $3, the noodle is served with a soup ( a combination of soy sauce, black vinegar, chili, pork oil) and topped with : minced meat (pork), sliced mushrooms (hioko), celery etc. resulting quite oily but very tasty & delicious soup. :)

Last week still curious about mie hing hwa, we got some information from our friend who is a "Hing Hwa" that there's several places also served "hing hwa" type noodle. So we went to muara karang, the restaurant was located next to a bridal salon own by a famous designer (forgot his name :p ). there's two type "hing hwa" noodle here : "mie heng hwa" and "mie heng hwa goreng", determined to tasted it we ordered both. In my opinion both of it tasted more delicious that the one at Sunter, the broth tasted more savory and the inggredient was vary : prawn, pork, mushroom, fish & chicken meatball and 'kacang goreng' sprinkled on top. too bad they didn't put fried seaweed on top of the noodle. when we asked them they said not many people favor it so they didn't put it in the noodle but we can asked for it if we want.

Last week I was meeting SC at Senayan City, this time we decided to try Nan Xiang before headed upstair to try tea gallery, this place was famous for their xiao long bao. We ordered xiao long bao 24K and a bowl of La Mian Cha Chiang 32K and a pot of Chinese tea. If the lamian was nothing special, the xiao long bao was really delicious. I guess We'll be back next time only to try their xiao long bao again.

Several weeks ago I received an email from LING, she informed me about mie Hing Hwa located at sunter. From what I hear from SC, Hing Hwa is a dialect group that comes from Putian, China. So when we happen on the way to Sunter one day to visit our friends, I insisted to look for this restaurant. After a while we found this restaurant and went inside for lunch. We ordered Mie HingHwa (small) 20K and Kwe Tiau Hing Hwa (20K). the meal came in quite a big bowl full with handmade noodle with chicken, prawn, mushroom, vegetables and dried seaweed on top of the meal. Overall the meal was good although not too tasty. Thanks ya Ling for the recommendation.

Last Weekend, we decided to stopped by this place for supper :P from the name you could guess that this place specialty was Bakmi Kepiting, so we ordered 2 portion Bakmi Kepiting and 1 Nasi Goreng Kepiting. Surprisingly the noodle & nasi goreng was so delicious. The crab was generous. Especially my fried rice, the fried rice it self tasted so delicious, and I can't help thinking that this was too good to be Halal. and after we questioned the owner, my guess was right. It was not Halal.

2 weeks ago, on our way back from kelapa gading, we feel hungry again :P, so we stopped by a "kaki lima" place called "bakmi garing 21". its almost midnight when we arrived, but the place was still crowded. so we ordered their pork noodle (around 9K if I'm not mistaken). the noodle tasted so delicious, much better than "bakmi kepiting owkie" that i had at sunter in the afternoon. :)

So 2 weeks ago after watching "over the hedge", we went here for lunch. its very crowded at lunch time when we arrived, we ordered "Hokkian Lo Mie" & "Bakmie Ayam Pangsit", the noodle texture is different, they used a fat & wide noodle. but tasted delicious.

Last weekend, before going to "ya-udah" bistro, SC & I were heading to Pluit to try "Bihun Kari Ayam" Tabona. I had tasted its original "bihun kari ayam" in Medan a couple of months ago. When we heard that there's is a restaurant called Tabona in Pluit, we decided to give it a try.

So we ordered "Bihun Kari Ayam" 21K with a glass of "sirop terong belanda" 11K, the taste was actually not bad, but SC reckons that the price was not worth it and he prefer Bihun Kari Ayam we had at RM Kosasih - pasar muara karang. Moreover, the curry is not as rich as the original version in Medan.

We visited 3 different chinese restaurant at MTA last week and tried 3 kind of noodle they served. The first restaurant was "Noodle Cafe" - very crowded, we ordered "egg noodle with wonton & roast duck" (21.5K) , have to waited for half an hour just to know they put the wrong order on our table :( the food taste was not very special, not recommended lah :(

Then we decided to go down and visited "Canton Bay" and ordered "Dry Noodle with Lo Duck and Lo Pork" (24K), it tasted much better than the first one, good service too :).

After that we noticed that there is a new restaurant opening called "Huang Ting", operated under the same management with "The Duck King" and "Imperial Chef", so we decided to tried it next time we go to MTA, last night we came there and ordered "Noodle Soup with Shui Jiau Wonton"(26K). not bad - for that price, the noodle texture was perfect.. mmm after that we ordered "Xiao Long Bao"(16.8K).. delicious... i'll be back hehehe :),

Last night we had dinner at Mangkok Putih located at Setiabudi Building. The restaurant was decorated in the usual cafe decoration with a touch of red accent. I don't really like the place setting, I think it's a little bit too crowded, no separation between smoking and no smoking area. :(

After seated we ordered 2 Duck Noodle(27K), Tempura Udon(35K), MP Fried Seafood Kweteow (26K), MP Fruit Cocktail (10K), Lime Squash(12.5K), Lime Juice(12.5K) and Guava Juice(12.5). One of the house speciality that we ordered last night was "Duck Noodle", I agree that the duck was delicious, but the rest of our order didn't taste very special. mmm I ate at Mangkok Putih @ Cilandak Town Square once, and I think their food quality is better than this one.

Last saturday, the first thing pop in my head after we arrived at Medan, North Sumatra is where are we going to have lunch. I insisted my Mom to take me to "Bakmie Kumango". So We headed there, and I ordered my usual plate of "Chicken Noodle" while my Mom ordered "Chicken Hainamnese Rice". The noodle is not as delicious as I remembered, maybe because of my high expetation. but It still the best noodle I have ever taste. Bon Apetit :)

After lunch we headed to "Pasar Ramai". Its a popular traditional market in Medan, Lots of foods (off course :)) and other goods hehehehe. After we circling the market for about 1 hour, I felt thirsty. So we stopped at some food stall and ordered Es Sekoteng, Es Cendol and He Ci (fried prawn, tofu, kangkung served with sour and sweet sauce). mmm... quite good. Actually there is still alot of food available there, such as e-mie, wonton noodle, nasi campur etc, but since I just had lunch I can't ordered them all hehehehe...
That night on my way back home to my hometown "Kisaran" (about 3-4 hours from Medan), We stopped at "RM 100", located at Jalan raya Medan Kisaran km 100. This is quite a popular restaurant according to my mom, they served alot variety of seafood for us to choose. So We ordered "Grilled Bawal Fish", "Grilled Pare Fish", Udang Tauco (stir fried prawn with fermented soybean sauce), and "Cah Kangkung". mmm not bad... Selamat Makan :)
