Nasi Tim @ Bakmi Loncat
Posted by jeny at 7:59 AM
I'm very picky when it comes to nasi tim, I hated nasi tim that is too mushy or too sweet. So far, my favorite nasi tim is the one sold near Taman Palem's traditional market and Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi. Last week, when I ate at a noodle stall located at Petak Sembilan's market, an elderly patron who sat in front of me ordered a portion of nasi tim and cracked open a boiled duck egg (I suspect he brought it from home). His portion of nasi tim looks very interesting, plus he asked for some chicken skin in his soup, and then put some spring onion and cilantro into the soup. I want that too! Unfortunately, I've already ate a bowl of noodle, which, by the way, tasted good. Later, he told me that the place serves a very delicious nasi tim that will always be sold out by 8AM. The next day, I returned here at 7AM and ordered a portion of nasi tim with some chicken skin in my soup. It was delicious. The rice was not too mushy, the chicken chunks were generous and they also added some Chinese black mushroom. The soup was real chicken broth soup, not MSG-laden soup usually found at noodle stalls. And to top off my excitement, this delicious meal only cost me 11K. :)

PS: their noodle, siomay and bakso goreng are also worth to try

Nasi Ulam Misjaya

Over the past year, I've tasted several kinds of nasi ulam whenever I've stumbled upon them. Yet, none of them was as good as Nasi Ulam Betawi Misjaya located in front of Toa Se Bio Shrine at Glodok area. It opens on late afternoons and is never lacking in customers. One day, I managed to have a bite there. It was quite packed, but luckily, there was an empty table in front of the shrine. I ordered a portion of nasi ulam with semur tahu & salty squid 12K. The rice came in a full plate consisting of steamed rice topped with fried bihoon, sliced cucumber, chopped fried peanut, fried shallot, salty squid slices, semur tahu, drenched in semur soup, topped with kerupuk, emping and kemangi (lemon basil). The taste was delicious and not too sweet. Too bad I didn't spot the chili jar until after I've finished the meal. I bet it would make the dish taste even better :)

Macau Che Jian
Posted by jeny at 6:44 AM
One Friday evening, we were looking for the ATM center in Grand Indonesia when I noticed a restaurant called Macau Che Jian next to the ATM center. After scanning the menu, we decided to go inside and get a seat. This restaurant serves Macaunese cuisine which is quite different from the usual Chinese cuisine because of the Portuguese influence. One of their specialties is Macau baked rice. It's rice topped with chicken or seafood then covered with tomato/cheese/Macau sauce and then baked. That evening, I ordered Macau baked rice with chicken and macau sauce 27.5K. The taste was quite unique because Macau sauce tasted a bit like curry sauce, but not too spicy. The portion was moderate with reasonable price :)

Mandarin Chicken Rice
Posted by jeny at 3:30 PM
Our next stop is a small restaurant perched at the front of PX Pavillion's restaurant alley. It's so tiny that 20 people would be enough to crowd the place. As the name suggests, Mandarin Chicken Rice only sells chicken rice. So we ordered a portion of Hainam chicken rice 28K. At first, I underestimated this place since good hainanese chicken rice is not easy to find, but it was surprisingly good. The steamed chicken was delicious with generous portion. The Hainam rice also tasted good. I think we'll be back to this place whenever I crave good chicken rice but to lazy too cook :)

Hadramout

Three weeks ago, we went to Hadramout for dinner. This place is famous for its middle east dishes. The interior is predictably decorated with a middle east look and the not-so-large room is separated into several cubicles. There are 2 choices of seating: on the table or on the carpet. Since there were 12 of us, we chose to sit on the carpet so we can have a more intimate communal dinner. :)

Be Pasih
Posted by jeny at 12:22 PM
After visiting Mak Beng and Made Weti, we decided to go to Jenggala Factory Outlet, which we heard has an outlet at Sanur. However, we failed to find it. We then went straight to Renon to try Warung Be Pasih although we're still quite full from two previous breakfasts. Warung Be Pasih offers fish dishes with traditional Klungkung spices. There were paket ikan bakar 22.5K, paket ikan goreng 16.5K, paket pepes pemuda 20.5K, paket pesinggahan 16.5K, paket steak ikan 18K

Be Pasih

We only ordered one paket pesinggahan (sate lilit, sambal matah, sup ikan, plecing, pepes, kacang tanah & nasi) 16.5K and es daluman (Balinese style of green cingcau sweet drink) 4.5K to share. Overall the dish was delicious and the price reasonable. I just wish I was not so full so I can appreciate it more. :) As for the Jenggala Factory Outlet, we later found its store at Sunset Road with the help of our friends).

Nasi Pantai Made Weti
Posted by jeny at 4:12 AM
After we finished our meal at Warung Mak Beng, it was still early, so we decided to drive to Segara Beach. When we arrived, we saw a small crowd in front of a small hut bearing the name nasi campur ayam kampung Made Weti. We quickly joined the queue and ordered a portion of nasi campur. They offer various kinds of lawar, chicken, telor bumbu bali, sate lilit, etc. Actually it was not much different from nasi campur warung Satria or nasi campur kedewatan, which in my opinion, tasted better than this one. But the atmosphere here are surely different :)

Nasi Pedas Ibu Andika
Posted by jeny at 11:43 AM
One of our "must try" destination in Bali is nasi pedas bu Andika. Although this nasi rames (mixed rice) style is not Balinese and more likely to be Javanese, it was worth to try as it's very hot / spicy. A few years ago, a friend told us about this place. Back then, it was only a small stall dubbed nasi bu polsek because the owner sold it near Kuta's police station every night. But now, they have a semi permanent place across Supernova minimarket. This time, we tried it during lunch time. We can choose anything from the displayed dishes plus the famous chili sauce. The price was quite affordable, but we ended up sweating nonstop because of the hot weather and very very hot dish :)

Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Ibu Mangku
Posted by jeny at 8:06 PM
Our next destination in Ubud was the famous Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Ibu Mangku. Located at Kedawetan village, we quickly found it because numerous cars were parked in front of the place, a Balinese style house which has been converted into a restaurant. Apparently Nasi ayam (chicken rice) is the only menu available here. :)

Nasi Ayam Kedawetan Ibu Mangku

Since we are still very full, we only ordered a portion to share. The dish consists of: chicken slices with spicy sauce (base genep), lawar, egg, sate lilit ayam and of course sambal matah. It was really delicious. I think this is a good place for those who want HALAL food in Bali.

Ikan Goreng Cianjur
Posted by jeny at 9:31 AM
Last month, we had dinner with several friends at Ikan Goreng Cianjur on Greenville housing complex (across Jakarta fruit store). They serve Sundanese dishes with reasonable prices. The interior is simple and clean. We ordered Nasi Liwet (Sundanese savory rice cooked in panci kastrol) 23K to share, ikan gurame goreng 40K, terong penyet 12K, udang sambal ebi 20K, tahu goreng 6K, tempe goreng 6K, pete goreng 8K, kangkung terasi 16K, sambal terasi 3K and sambal mangga 6K. Turned out some of the dishes came with a small portion of chili sauce, so we were surrounded with several plates of chili sauces. Their Nasi Liwet was delicious and the other dishes were quite good too, except for their udang sambal ebi, which appeared different from what was shown in the menu (I guess they used baby "pancet" prawn) and tasted only so so. Overall, I feel that this kind of food would taste better if we eat with hands, sitting at a meadow with hilly views, just like the one I had at Selabintana, Sukabumi, several years ago. :)

At night, the street is packed with stalls selling all kinds of dishes ranging from bakpao, chicken rice, congee, stir fried dishes and many more. Ketupat Gloria 65
Posted by jeny at 5:43 PM
3 weeks ago, we stopped by Glodok for breakfast before heading to Mangga Dua Mall. Our destination is Ketupat Gloria 65 recommended by a friend. Located near Toko Kawi, the place is pretty spartan, located in front of a ruko (shophouse) with only one table to sit. We ordered a portion of Ketupat Sayur which consists of ketupat (rice cake), fried tofu, boiled egg, and squash juliennes, drenched in coconut milk and topped with chilli sambal and fried shallot. It was delicious! It was not too sweet nor salty and the squash was still crunchy. The price was quite high as it cost us about 18K per portion. Though delicious, I think I still prefer Ketupat Sayur in Padang style.

Still in a mood for Japananese food, we tried another Japanese restaurant at FX Sudirman. The place was quite crowded on Friday night, luckily we can get a seat at the non-smoking section inside the restaurant. It always irritates me when a restaurant puts its non-smoking section outside, because that means they are saving the best seats for smokers inside. Anyway, whenever we're in a Japanese restaurant, I always looked for donburi while SC always looked for cold soba. So we ordered Zaru Soba (brown wheat soba sprinkled with seaweed) 45K, Chirashi Don (slices of tuna and salmon sashimi, grilled unagi and tamago on sushi rice) 57.3K from the menu. The presentation of the food was very appealing, but to me the taste was only so so. My chirashi don topping didn't taste very fresh and the rice was too salty. SC's cold soba was quite delicious though he said it was just average and prefers the one at Midori :)

Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi
Posted by jeny at 6:33 AM
Last week, SC noticed a new restaurant at Taman Palem Lestari Boulevard's "restaurant row". The place is called Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi. I'm so excited when I heard about it and we decided to try it first thing in the morning the next day. The place was already open at 6am, perfect for breakfast. We came in and ordered a portion of nasi tim with a raw free-range chicken egg on top (19K). The rice was served alongside a plate of cilantro and a bowl of soup. I quickly mixed the egg with the rice, resulting in a sort of creamy texture. I never had nasi tim with raw egg before and to me, it tasted so delicious. I don't like the mushy type of nasi tim, so this kind of nasi tim is perfect for me since I can still feel the rice grain. The price was quite expensive compared to the one we usually had, but I thought it was worth my every rupiah. Btw, they also serve chicken noodle, rice noodle, sui kiaw, pangsit, somay, mie kangkung, baso goreng, otak-otak, tahu baso, baso sapi & various traditional cake. But I think I'll be back for their heavenly nasi tim. :)

It has been a long time since we last visited Kiyadon. I've always liked Kiyadon for their donburi. So two weeks ago, when I was craving for another bowl of Kiyadon's donburi, we went to their joint at Pacific Place. The place is spacious, with faked tatami seater. The menu is quite varied, from appetizer & salad, sushi, sashimi, set menu, ala carte menu, nabemono, agemono, noodle dishes (udon/soba), donburi & pasta. I ordered Kinoko Don (rice bowl topped with mushroom onion and egg) special 53K. the dish came with salad, and a small plate of cold wheat soba. The dish tasted exquisite, I love the donburi so much, too bad the portion was quite small. Although the price is not cheap, I'll still return from time to time.

Bubur Ayam Sukabumi Tebet

2 weeks ago, SC took me to try Bubur Ayam Sukabumi (Sukabumi's style porridge) at Tebet. There were several other joints that also serve bubur ayam Sukabumi, so we decided to tried the one located next to Cheese Cake Factory. Since we're planning to have dessert at the restaurant next door, we only ordered a portion of bubur ayam special complete with raw egg to share. In my opinion, it tasted delicious, the porridge was savory, maybe it was cooked in chicken broth, so I don't need to pour soy sauce anymore. The price was also reasonably cheap. :)

Indian Tandoor

Last month I was craving for Indian Cuisine. At first we wanted to go to Haveli at Graha Irama, but a friend pointed out that it has recently closed. So our next choice is Queen of India at Hotel Danau Sunter. On our way to Sunter, we passed several Indian restaurant that looks quite promising, so we changed course and stopped at Indian Tandoor.

Indian Tandoor

The place was simple, but clean with several Indian accessories on the wall and the television was playing an Indian movie channel. It turned out that we're the only Indonesian patrons sitting there. To me, it is a sign of authentic food. So we ordered garlic naan 10.5K, butter naan 9.5K & Mix Vegetable Makhanwala (a combination of vegetables cooked in tomato gravy) 29K, plus a portion of chicken biryani rice 39.5K. The meal turned out in very generous portions, it tasted hot, tasty & spicy. Since I love Indian dishes, to me all of the dishes was very delicious. The service was very friendly, we surely will be back for more.

Before we headed back to Jakarta, we decided on nasi lengko for lunch. The one that was recomended to us is Nasi Lengko Pak Sadi on Jalan Pagongan. We asked around for directions and circled the area several times, but couldn't find it. So we decided to have lunch at Nasi Lengko H Barno instead. We ordered several portions of nasi lengko with sate kambing. To me the taste of this nasi lengko was very plain, the satay was ok although there're more fat than the meat. :(

Nasi Jamblang Mang Dul

The next morning, after some "light" breakfast at the hotel, we went to Warung Nasi Jamblang Mang Dul. A very popular dish in Cirebon, Nasi Jamblang is rice wrapped in teak leaf and we can choose from a large number of side dishes to accompany the rice. Mang Dul is among the most favorite nasi jamblang sellers in Cirebon (besides nasi jamblang pelabuhan). The place was very crowded when we arrived. People are queuing to get a plate of nasi jamblang, and then they took what they want from the vast selection on the table. After that, they search for an empty spot (really tough to find) and sit down to enjoy their meal. The meal was tasty and the price was reasonable.

Nasi Uduk Jembatan Baru

This is my favorite Nasi Uduk Betawi, located near Trans-Jakarta Bus Stop: Jembatan Baru. It's just a small cart (gerobak) that opens at around 5 PM. They serve a very authentic & tasty Betawi style coconut rice complete with its semur jengkol. The rice is very fragrant and perfectly compliment the host of avalaible side dishes & the obligatory peanut chilly sauce. The price is very very cheap as a pack of nasi uduk complete with all its inggredients only costs less than 10K. In my oppinion this one is the best I've tasted so far. :)

We found a restaurant called Le Seminyak that serves Balinese dishes in Pacific Place Mall. As we're quite fond of Balinese cuisine, we decided to try it. The place is spacious, with high ceilings and nicely decorated. We ordered their Nasi Campur Bali (steamed rice topped with a seasonal mix of vegetables, meats, satay and sambal) 32.8K and Cram Cam (Balinese traditional chicken soup) 22.8K. In my opinion, the dish was not as good as the decoration. It was decent, but they still need a lot of improvements before they can be compared with the "real thing" :(

Mangkok Ayam

From Tizi, we moved to Setiabudhi Supermarket, which is also known as supermarket bule because they sell mostly imported goods. We're planning to have dinner later at some place around Ciumbuleuit. After wandering for a while, I spotted a unique place next to Periplus books store. It is a small kiosk called Mangkok Ayam (chicken bowl). The interior is warm, dominated with wood, and there are chickens all over the place, from the dinnerware to the wallpaper & even printed on the lighting. I'm in love with this place instantly.

When I first heard about this place, I was thinking of a place with chinese interiors, but I was surprised when I entered the building. It is chic & cool, bit white with minimalist design. It has murals painted on the wall, white & pink furniture and high ceiling. I instantly fell in love with the decor. (plus they have a fast & free wifi, and let us sit there for hours )

Turned out this was the best chicken rice i ever had in my whole life, the rice was fragrant and cooked using a long grain rice, not oily at all, and the steamed chicken was cooked to perfection perfection, the meat's color was clean, smooth and so tender i could cry when I was chewing it (my friend said I decribed the chicken rice just like I describe a beautiful women) :P no wonder this place got the number one best chicken rice in Singapore from makansutra, much much better than loykee chicken rice

One of the restaurant we visit while in Denpasar was "Gemah Ripah": a middle class restaurant that served Balinese cuisine such as : the famous Babi Guling (Balinese suckling Pig), sate lilit, ayam/bebek betutu etc. located at "pertokoan Kartika Udayana", the place interior was clean and homy, plus 2 table for "lesehan". we ordered one of their special menu : nasi campur bali (pisah) 13.5K. the meal came with a place of steamed rice accompanied with a plate consist of babi guling, lawar, urutan, usus goreng, kulit babi guling, sate tusuk, rambak and a bowl of spicy "ares" soup. Overall it was delicious, especially the "urutan" (Balinese pork sausage). the most delicious "urutan" I've ever tasted :)

Warung Satria & Warung Wardani
Posted by jeny at 7:15 PM
One of our missions in Bali is to try out authentic Balinese cuisine, so the next day we jumped on a bemo and headed to Denpasar. We wanted to try 2 restaurants serving halal version of 'Nasi Campur Bali': "Warung Satria" and "Warung Wardani". Our first stop was Warung Satria. The place was still empty since we arrived early. So we ordered 'Nasi Campur Special' (steamed rice served with shredded chicken in spicy sambal, lawar, balinese spicy egg, plecing kacang panjang, sate lilit ikan, fried prawn, complete with sambal matah) 16K. The meal came in quite a generous portion + a bowl of 'ares' (edible banana stem) soup. It was delicious and the 'sate lilit' (Balinese grilled fish satay) is the best compared to sate lilit from all other places we've tried in Bali.

RM Galung

RM Galung

We went to "RM. Galung" for lunch last weekend. This restaurant served an authentic food of Pematang Siantar : Nasi Galung (which is kind of "nasi rames/nasi padang" from North Sumatra ). I guess the meal had Malay influence but tasted hotter and spicier. Some of their speciality is "Ikan Pari Goreng", "Ikan Mayong", "Gulai Kepala Ikan". "Sop Sapi" . I tried their "miso ayam" (Medanese chicken noodle soup) too, and it was really delicious especially if you eat it with a glass of cold "liang teh" or "jus terong belanda" or "markisa". I used to have this kind of "nasi" back in my home town but never know that it was called "Nasi Galung" untill now. :)

Nasi Gandul
Posted by jeny at 9:50 AM
Last week, after visiting some friends at the hospital, we decided to have dinner at Pesanggrahan. Since its already late, I only want something light for dinner, so we didn't looking for some fancy looking restaurant and just look for street food instead. We stopped by a small warung called "Rumah Makan Nasi Gandul, masakan khas Pati Jateng". my first experience with "Nasi Gandul" was at "spice garden" Sogo foodcourt which was quite expensive & tasted so so. So we ordered 1 portion of "Nasi Gandul Campur" & 1 portion of "Nasi Ayam khas Semarang". On the table there's a display of various "jerohan", perkedel, bakwan jagung, tahu, tempe, tempe bacem etc to choose to accompanied our meal. Overall our ordered tonight taste much much more delicious than the one we had at Spice Garden & very reasonable price too. We will be back there soon to try another menu like : "Nasi Pindang", "Tahu Telor", "Soto Ayam Kemiri", Mangut etc.. (nyam nyam bgt deh pokoknya) :)
