Bubur Kwang Tung
Posted by jeny at 4:32 AM
Last weekend, we went to Pecenongan to dine at the famous Bubur Kwang Tung. It's been so long since our last visit. The decor remained roughly the same. A typical Chinese-style restaurant with rather tacky celebrity photos paraded along the wall. As usual, we asked for a non-smoking area and was directed to the second floor which was still empty. I'm pretty sure Bubur Kwangtung has no non-smoking area and we were led to the second floor only because it was empty.
Bubur Kwangtung
We ordered the famous crab congee 45K and a portion of tahu special ala Kwang Tung 25K to share. The congee came in a large portion, more than enough for two. It was cooked in broth and the cracked crab was placed in the middle of the bowl with lots and lots of crab egg. The accompanying condiments were ginger, chili and soy sauce. Still delicious (and consistent) after all these years. The tahu special was also great, much more delicious than the one we had at Dharma Kitchen, although we would have preferred that they used ordinary tofu instead of Japanese egg tofu :)

Fish & Chips
Posted by jeny at 12:23 PM
From Die Stube, we moved to our next destination. Still in Kemang area, there's a small joint that sells only Fish & Chips. There isn't even a parking space so SC had to park at La Codefin building behind the joint. He knew this place since 2000, back when he worked right across Fish & Chips. After reading a review here, he was dying to go there again. The menu is divided into several sections: Fish & Chips (admiral 48K, captaens 38K and sailors 25K), Burgers, side orders (potato scallops, onion ring), juices, milk shake & thick shake. Considering that we're still full, we only ordered the 'Captaens' fish and chips (80gr imported dori fish and the golden crispy home made chips) to share. I have to admit that this is the best fish & chips I've ever had. The fish was fresh, and the batter was crispy, and the chips was also not bad. We surely look forward to return to this place. :)

Pondok Ikan Bakar Kalimantan
Posted by jeny at 4:41 AM
A day after we returned from Bali, we went with several friends to Cimanggis to try ikan patin bakar bambu ( big catfish grilled in bamboo). The place was really really crowded when we arrived, even though it was already 2 PM. We tried to reserved earlier but were told that they don't accept reservations. So while waiting for our table, we placed our order first. We ordered: 2 ikan patin bakar bambu weight 1.7kg for 170K, 2 portion of sop ikan gurame (big gourami fish soup) weight 1.6Kg for 128K, teri tawar balado 30K, ayam bakar ala Kalimantan (Kalimantan style grilled chicken) 10K, sop iga (rib soup) 30K, sop buntut (oxtail soup) 30K, tumis kangkung 10K, karedok (Sundanese vegetables salad with peanut dressing) 10K plus orange juice mixed with coconut meat 16K & young coconut juice 8K. Overall it was a hearty meal, the fish were tasty and delicious, the sauce was so generous that we can take the leftover home. I also love the gurame soup as it was so fresh (it reminds me of Manado style kuah ikan asam). The orange juice also came in a large portion, a big beer glass with sugar on the side. :)

[Revisited] Menega
Posted by jeny at 12:25 PM
Still in the same day, we went to Jimbaran to have dinner an hour before sunset. Actually, I wanted to try a new restaurant rather than going back to Menega, but we couldn't make up our mind so we went back to the old stalwart. As we arrived quite early, we ordered the meal to be served after sunset, got a seat in front of the beach and just sat there enjoying the moment. For our dinner that day, we ordered: 0.4kg king prawn 54K, 0.8kg yellow crazy fish 48K, young coconut 20K. plecing kangkung and steamed rice are included. Overall, it still tasted great, but I guess everything will taste delicious if you eat with your loved one at a lovely beach :)

Be Pasih
Posted by jeny at 12:22 PM
After visiting Mak Beng and Made Weti, we decided to go to Jenggala Factory Outlet, which we heard has an outlet at Sanur. However, we failed to find it. We then went straight to Renon to try Warung Be Pasih although we're still quite full from two previous breakfasts. Warung Be Pasih offers fish dishes with traditional Klungkung spices. There were paket ikan bakar 22.5K, paket ikan goreng 16.5K, paket pepes pemuda 20.5K, paket pesinggahan 16.5K, paket steak ikan 18K

Be Pasih

We only ordered one paket pesinggahan (sate lilit, sambal matah, sup ikan, plecing, pepes, kacang tanah & nasi) 16.5K and es daluman (Balinese style of green cingcau sweet drink) 4.5K to share. Overall the dish was delicious and the price reasonable. I just wish I was not so full so I can appreciate it more. :) As for the Jenggala Factory Outlet, we later found its store at Sunset Road with the help of our friends).

Warung Mak Beng
Posted by jeny at 11:55 AM
The next day, we headed to Sanur for Warung Mak Beng, an eatery famous for its fried jangki fish and fish head soup. Located near Sindhu beach, this place is said to be quite popular and would usually sold out by lunch time. Luckily, it was quite empty when we arrived and we can easily get a seat. As usual, we ordered only one portion of fried fish & fish head 22K and orange juice 7K to share. The fried fish was accompanied with sambel ulek and a wedge of lime. The fish head soup is a clear soup with cucumber that tasted very spicy and sour. It was delicious and also fresh. I think they get their fish from nearby Sanur fishermen. :)

Makasar Seafood Pelangi
Posted by jeny at 7:00 PM
Last month we had dinner with Nath at Seafood Pelangi on Wahid Hasyim street. I've been wanting to visit this place since I read the review in Kuliner: Rayuan Pulau Kelapa 2, but I hesitated since the book stated that ths place has a free smoking policy. After a friend ensured us that they have a smoke-free private room, I dragged SC there. The place serves Makasar style seafood which can be categorized in Chinese food (soups), seafood (fish, prawn, crab), vegetables & hot menu which are several selections of Makasar traditional menu. We ordered: Ikan kue bakar, lawara unti (jantung pisang / banana's blossom) 10K, acar ikan tuing tuing 15K. There were otak otak ikan (grilled fish cakes) @4.5K served on the table. We tried a piece and decided that we prefer the one sold at Muara Karang. The fish came with three types of chili sauces (mango sauces, red chili sauces, and slices of bird eyes chilis with green tomato). The third one tasted really really hot. The fish was OK - it tasted too sweed for my taste buds. Maybe next time I'll order the fish in rica-rica style instead. The lawara unti tasted delicious and reminded me a little of Balinese lawar. In my opinion, the most delicious thing in here is their acar telur ikan tuing tuling. It tasted so fresh, although SC & Nath can't stand its chewy crunchy texture. I like it very much :)

Pa Pa Co
Posted by jeny at 6:18 PM
Whenever we go to Mangga Dua, I'm always looking for TomYam for lunch. I've already tried Mama Kitchen's tomyam, so this time we decided to try Papaco. The place was bursting with people having quick lunches in between their christmas shopping. After wandering for a while, we found Papaco's stall and got a table nearby. I ordered a portion of Tomyam seafood with kuetiau/flat rice noodle (forgot how much it cost.. about 20K-25K if i'm not mistaken). The dish was served almost immediately, but I had to nag for a spoon and extra cilantro. It tasted descent, but not spicy enough. I think Mama Kithen serves a much better Tomyam than this place.

Indah Seafood 21
Posted by jeny at 10:18 AM
Last month, we were in the Mangga Dua area and had the chance to dine at Indah Seafood. I have known this place for a long time as Seafood keramik because the setting & interior looks like a ceramic store (CMIIW). The place was quite crowded when we arrived. They serve the usual seafood restaurant fares: fish, crab, prawn, squid, oyster, mussel & several types of vegetables dishes. They also have nasi goreng seafood. Since it was just me & SC having dinner, we didn't order much. We ordered 2pcs Kepiting Telor Saus Tiram 104K (female crab in soy sauce, Padang/Medan/black pepper sauce are also available), kerang darah (poached blood mussels accompanied with chili pineapple dipping) 7K, kangkung cah polos (stir-fried morning glory) 9K with kelapa muda (coconut water) 6K. We didn't have to wait long for our meals to arrive. Overall it tasted good (finger lickin' good to be precise), The crabs were big and fresh, the sauce was OK though. I don't like soy sauce much, but that's the only sauce SC's delicate stomach could take. The chili sauce that came with the mussels was hot, their sambal mangga (mango sambal) was refreshing although SC thought it didn't suit the dishes. :)

After lunch, we immediately head to Cirebon. The journey took about 4 hours and we arrived there on the evening. After checking in to Santika hotel, we began our quest to find something for dinner. Following Arie & Grace's (the writers of Kuliner series) recommendations, we stopped at a seafood restaurant not far from the hotel. We ordered kerang rebus 6K, kepiting telur saos tiram 75K, udang bakar 65K, cumi goreng tepung 18K, bawal goreng kering 30K and kangkung polos 7K. Overall all the dishes tasted quite good, the seafood was fresh and it was quite tasty, although their chilli sauce tasted more sweet than hot. I especially like their fried pomfret with garlic. It was so aromatic. :)

Dinar Seafood
Posted by jeny at 6:50 PM
3 weeks ago, we had dinner with several friends at Dinar seafood restaurant. The restaurant serves Makassar-style dishes. One of their specialty is ikan kudu-kudu bakar (it's a uniquely shaped fish that has a hard scale and grilled with spice in its stomach). So here's what we ordered : ikan kudu kudu bakar 40K, kepiting jantan lada hitam 70K, udang mayonaise 45K, kangkung belacan 12.5K, cumi saous XO 45K, sop kepala ikan 40K, and pete bakar (1 papan) 5K. Overall, all the dishes were impressive although the portion was not very big. I especially like the kudu-kudu fish, their sop kepala ikan was hot and tasty, it reminded me of Manado's sop ikan asam, combined with Thai's Tom Yam Kung. The crab was also superb with generous amount of black pepper. I love mixing my pete bakar with the black pepper and eat it with rice. It tasted heavenly :)

Saung Rasane
Posted by jeny at 12:32 PM
Last month, SC and I try this 'hip' restaurant called Rasane at Taman Palem (also available at pessanggrahan), we already heard about this place for quite some times, but the high price made us hesitate to try it. Since its just the two of us, we only ordered 3 ounce kepiting asap telur 34.5K, kangkung lombok 19.5K, kerang darah rebus 15K, udang pancet telor asin 35K, steamed rice 4K, and es teh tawar 5K. The crab came in wrapped in banana leaf, it taste OK but not what I had in mind when I was thinking of smoked crab :) We do love their kangkung lombok and Udang pancet telor asin. I think we will be back to this place some other times to try their other specialties.

Jun Njan Restaurant
Posted by jeny at 4:21 PM
About 2 months ago, Jun Njan opened their new branch at Pluit. So we decided to have a family lunch there. The place was quite crowded at lunch time, but fortunately we managed to get a table. I don't really like the interior design. It looks like that the designer was aiming for a minimalist look but ended up with numerous ill-suited chinese decorations. It makes the restaurant looks more crowded that it really is. So we ordered: ayam garam, fish, prawn, kepiting telur asin, tofu, and fried noodle. Overall the meal was OK, except the ayam garam was way too salty (the restaurant manager promised to remedy this), while the tofu and kepiting telur asin were delicious. We will visit this place again someday.

On our way back from Uluwatu, we stopped by Menega Cafe at Jimbaran beach for dinner. This place was the target for Bali bombing II. I love this place so much. We had delicious dinner under the skies and we can also feel the warm sand on our feet. We ordered : 0.8kg grouper fish 40K and 0.65kg Crab 39K grilled in jimbaran style and orange juices 8K. The meal came with a plate of delicious plecing kangkung. The seafood was so delicious with 3 types of chili sauce for dipping.

Seafood WiroSableng 212
Posted by jeny at 11:22 AM
I had dinner with SC & his friends last weekend at "Seafood WiroSableng 212". The restaurant was located at Kelapa Gading Boulevard, after passing MKG (Mall Kelapa Gading), we start searching for 212 sign at the left side of the road, it should not be far from the mall, but we couldn't found it. so we decided to stop and asked the parking guard nearby. It turns out we already passing the place. the place now got no sign of 212. it only had a big "teh botol" billboard as the sign - thats why we didn't recognized it.

That night we ordered "Kepiting saos Jepang" (crab cooked in japanese sauce), Ikan Bakar (forgot what kind of fish we ordered), Gurame Goreng, "Kerang Hijau saos Padang" (green mussel cooked in padangnese sauce), "Kerang Darah rebus" (3 portion), "Kangkung" & "Toge cah polos". Our order came in 10 minutes (preety fast), The fish was delicious and fresh, the padangnese sauce was superb. forgot how much all this food cost, but if I'm not mistaken its about 250K (not very expensive of this kind of food). :)
